In the 2015 Paris Agreement, the international community agreed to “strengthen the global response to climate change” by limiting the “increase in global average temperatures to well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and ideally to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As recognized in the Agreement, to stay within these limits, global greenhouse gas emissions must be rapidly reduced, “so as to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century” — a situation commonly described as “net zero.” The need to reach net zero has prompted growing …

Commentators who advocate either for or against corporate and asset managers addressing climate risks often refer to “fiduciary duty” as justification for their claims. Yet no field of corporate or asset management actually imposes one standalone fiduciary duty. Nor do any two business-law fields impose the same fiduciary regime. Instead, these fields adopt differing arrays of fiduciary duties to address various types of relationships, comprising a different blend of affirmative obligations and/or prohibitions, assessed with different degrees of strictness by enforcers and courts. Context. We present results of time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of the short-orbital period dwarf nova EI Psc.

Aims. This study aims to determine fundamental system parameters of EI Psc, study properties of accretion structures in the system, and investigate its origin and current evolution state.

Methods. We analyse newly obtained time-resolved spectroscopic and photometric observations as well as archival data. We used light curve modelling, Doppler tomography, and MESA evolutionary models to study the characteristics of EI Psc.

This design consists of two winches strategically placed on either side of the rail switch. While deep learning has shown promise in accident detection, a research gap persists in applying state-of-the-art transformer architectures to the task of anticipatory, real-time crash prediction from video. We investigated associations between preconception and prenatal heat stress and wildfire (WF) smoke exposures on adverse birth outcomes and whether neighborhood climate vulnerability is an effect modifier in the Maternal And Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social stressors cohort (N = 713). Generalized linear models were fit to test the association between exposures and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), low birthweight (LBW), and Fenton growth z-score outcomes, adjusting for confounders. Living in a high climate vulnerability index neighborhood was tested as an effect modifier. During preconception, increases in heat stress and WF measures were associated with higher odds of SGA. Background: People who inject drugs (PWID) in the rural U.S. often inject stimulants, alone or with opioids. The impact of these substance use patterns may influence HCV risk behaviors. This analysis examines the associations of HCV antibody positivity with injecting only opioids, only stimulants (methamphetamine/cocaine), and opioids and stimulants together among rural PWID. Methods: The Rural Opioid Initiative (ROI) consists of eight research sites that enrolled people who use drugs in rural communities in ten U.S. states from 2018 to 2020. The rise of generative AI is transforming the realm of business education. As interest and concerns surrounding the use of generative AI in schools grow, research examining the effects of generative AI in education and learning remains sparse. To that end, this study aims to demystify the potential generative AI by evaluating the performance of ChatGPT in addressing Operations Management problems and questions, which are classified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and grouped as quantitative vs. qualitative, deterministic vs. stochastic groups. What Before Means: Teaching The English Pluperfect, Max Miller, Joseph C. M. Davis

This paper extends existing linguistic analyses of the English simple past tense (e.g., took) and pluperfect tense (e.g., had taken) by thoroughly examining communicative effects. It also proposes a pedagogical application. The analysis is based on authentic contextualized discourse (primarily a single published text). In distinction to the simple past, the pluperfect establishes a communicative link between a past time and an event before that time. In this way, the pluperfect makes conceptional connection (which could be termed "tethering") through temporal priority. The meaning of the pluperfect thus contributes to textual cohesion. Current models of graduate medical education and faculty development have been described as inadequate for teaching, learning, and dialoguing about race and racism in medicine. We created the “Not-So Journal Club” (NSJC) to provide opportunities to review articles and discuss current events and social justice issues. Respondents reported planning to discuss with colleagues, make change to professional behaviors, and requested actions they could take to spur change. NSJC model appears to be effective to engage faculty in meaningful conversations about race and racism in medicine.

Objective

Walk With Ease (WWE) is a six-week arthritis-appropriate evidence-based physical activity program traditionally offered in a face-to-face format. Because many populations encounter participation barriers to in-person programs, WWE was modified for telephone delivery (WWE-T). The short- and long-term effects of this program on physical activity and arthritis-related outcomes were examined.

Methods

Participants (n = 267) with arthritis were randomized to WWE-T or a wait list control. WWE-T participants received two telephone calls per week (one group and one individual call) for six weeks. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and demonstrate how to reduce the administrative burden experienced by patients when navigating medication affordability resources in the United States.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Informed by administrative burden theory, we conducted an environmental scan of medication affordability resources for atrial fibrillation, and four common comorbidities (diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and lipid disorder). We systematically searched for resources (eg, patient assistance programs, savings cards and nonprofit support) and extracted information about types, eligibility criteria, needed documentation, and application processes.

Very few four-year American colleges and universities consistently enroll and graduate substantial proportions of low-income students. The outlier institutions that do-institutions I term Equity Engines-are vital social resources for both low-income students and our democratic society. Yet like other valuable resources, they are unevenly distributed across the United States. Drawing on geospatial analysis and bivariate mapping, I examine the relationship between access to and need for Equity Engines across states and within them. Moving from the state to the census tract level, I find compounding geographic barriers to bachelor's degree completion in southern states. These states have high rates of …

Telogen effluvium is a form of non-scarring hair loss characterized by premature shedding of hair. Pathophysiologically, telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase, resulting in excessive shedding. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in the hair follicle's growth cycle, possibly mediated by illness, infection, major surgery, low protein intake, or hormonal changes. Some medications can also be linked to this disease, such as beta blockers, carbamazepine, and vitamin A. When affected hairs are in the resting phase, noticeable hair shedding occurs. Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare systemic disorder of elastic fibers. The most common manifestations include characteristic papules and ocular angioid streaks. Cardiovascular complications include peripheral arterial disease, hypertension, premature coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular disease. These associations are secondary to dystrophic elastic fibers, resulting in the calcification of small- to medium-sized arteries. We present the case of a 22-year-old otherwise healthy female patient diagnosed with PXE following a biopsy of a neck lesion. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed characteristic angioid streaks. The patient also reported early satiety and leg cramping, which prompted referral to gastroenterology and cardiology. Further investigation raised concern …

A federal wealth tax is high on the wish list of progressives, but is it constitutional? This Article shows that under the original public meaning of the Constitution, a wealth tax is a “direct tax” that must be apportioned. This means that the percentage of revenue collected in each state must match its percentage of the population. For instance, if two states both have three percent of the population, each must provide three percent of the revenue. This leads to an unappealing outcome: if one state is less wealthy, it needs a higher tax rate to supply its share.

Objectives

Transdiagnostic models aim to uncover shared mechanisms across mental disorders. Reward responsiveness (the ability to experience pleasure from rewarding stimuli) is a plausible, yet underexplored, transdiagnostic mechanism linking obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression. This study used network analysis to (1) examine how key reward responsiveness domains are interlinked in individuals with OCD and (2) explore how each domain is uniquely associated with OCD and depression.

Clinical trials are increasingly using remote monitoring techniques at the patient's home. We conducted a secondary analysis of remote safety and tolerability monitoring from two fully-remote clinical trials that tested fluvoxamine for the acute treatment of COVID-19. Both trials assessed pulse and blood pressure daily, and one study assessed symptoms daily via Ecological Momentary Assessment. On average, patients provided data on vital signs on 93% of the study days and provided data on side effects on 81% of the study days. With respect to safety, patients taking fluvoxamine had reduced pulse rate compared to placebo, with the greatest difference-5 points-at …

This case study investigates the way in faculty perceives the function of diversity in molding student success and institutional inclusiveness under a business school’s context. Conducting a mixed-methods survey of faculty, the study examines the question, does diverse faculty representation influence student retention, classroom engagement, and academic performance? Findings reveal robust agreement amongst faculty that diversity makes learning environments more inclusive, promotes student well-being and creates supportive mentor relationships with desirable influence to student persistence and success. The qualitative responses show the implication of culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive faculty–student relationships, especially to underrepresented students.
