Math Information Retrieval From Images Via Formula Extraction, Vector Embedding, And Multimodal Llm-Based Question Answering, Angel Wheelwright Crawford
Theses and Dissertations
Math Information Retrieval (MIR) aims to revolutionize the retrieval of math information by addressing the challenges in representing, retrieving, and producing highly specialized math content. In order to develop a robust MIR system, designers must be able to process math equations (MEs) to a format that different systems can use, which is difficult due to various formats math information are stored in, including visual images and document texts. To improve the usage of math information in varied forms for people who are learning and utilizing math, we propose three different methods of handling ME data. The first method is a …

Organizational socialization and the practice of onboarding new hires are central human resources functions. However, traditional socialization theory and practice were built on assumptions that are increasingly misaligned with today's work context. We identified four current, emerging, and future work trends that characterize the evolving landscape surrounding organizational socialization: technological advancement, the expansion of remote work arrangements, rising societal loneliness and mental health challenges, and aging workforce demographics. Collectively, these trends have contributed to dramatic shifts in the context and performance of work, as well as the expectations that employees and organizations hold for one another. Accordingly, we argue that …

Structural Differential Privacy In Graph Neural Networks, Bibek Giri
Structural Differential Privacy In Graph Neural Networks, Bibek Giri
Master’s Dissertations
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have demonstrated impressive performance across a range of graph-based learning tasks. However, their application to domains with sensitive relational data raises serious privacy concerns, as the graph structure itself may leak confidential information. This thesis investigates a decentralized framework for enforcing edge-level local di!erential privacy (LDP) in graph-structured data. We introduce two mechanisms that perturb a node’s neighborhood in a privacy-preserving yet utility-aware manner. The first approach replaces randomly selected neighbors with feature-similar nodes from the 2-hop neighborhood, ensuring structural realism while preserving degree. The second approach eliminates the need for explicit 2-hop propagation and dummy …

Localization Of Leakage Caused By Low‑Voltage Wiring Errors On User Side Based On Correlation Analysis And Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, Junfeng Zheng, Chaoqiang Chen, Feng Chen, Yaxuan Chen
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Neutral and ground wiring errors on the user side are common in low-voltage transformer districts, which can cause user load currents to be converted into residual currents, resulting in frequent tripping of residual current circuit protection devices in the transformer district and their forced deactivation, thereby posing a threat to electrical safety. Since such wiring errors are present on the user side and are difficult to locate and troubleshoot, they have become a major obstacle to the deployment of residual current protection in transformer districts. This paper proposes a method for locating the user-side leakage due to wiring errors based …

Research On Key Technologies For Ar Feature Extraction In Relay Protection Operation Sites, Yongzhi Zhang, Yongting Zhang
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
The relay protection operation requires strict technical operation and high accuracy. In response to the current challenges of high complexity and poor universality in modeling with augmented reality (AR) applications, a feature extraction edge computing framework is proposed. Firstly, the Canny algorithm is applied to perform edge analysis on the meter, pressure plate, and terminal block of the protection cabinet. To address salt-and-pepper noise in the images, a fixed-window median filtering method is employed for prepossessing. The improved Sobel operator optimizes gradients in the horizontal and vertical directions, and a set of contour boundary lines is constructed using the least …

Fire Risk Prediction Of Distribution Lines Based On Rf‑Adaboost Algorithm, Tian Tian, Jun Wang, Xin Ning, Zhang Sun, Xin Wang
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
In response to wildfires that threaten the stable operation of distribution lines, it is important to establish a fire risk prediction model for distribution lines. However, the scarcity of data on wildfires causes sample imbalance, affecting the accuracy of the model. To this end, based on the influencing factors such as meteorological, geographic, combustible, and social factors, support vector machines and the idea of cost sensitivity are used to assign more weight to minority samples. Recursive feature elimination is used to select features that favor minority class classification. On this basis, a fire risk prediction model for distribution lines based …

In recent years, there have been numerous wildfires caused by various factors, seriously affecting the safe operation of overhead distribution lines. In addition to the contact between overhead lines and trees, human use of fire and lightning are also among the causes of wildfire accidents. The 10 kV overhead line is taken as the research object, and an experimental research platform for single-phase fire-contact and tree-contact faults is built. By means of a high-resistance ground fault model and a comparison in the time and frequency domains, the characteristics of the two faults are analyzed, and the change rules of leakage …

Research On Real‑Time Power Scheduling Optimization Considering Renewable Energy Characteristics, Guoming Luo, Xiaoyun Huang, Xinming Fan
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
In power systems with large amounts of renewable energy and high variability, conventional scheduling methods cannot adequately accommodate the effects of the above variability. A scheduling optimization method is proposed to evaluate the optimal unit participation factor by considering the variability of solar, wind, and load demand. Both sequential and dynamic models are used, and variability and uncertainty costs are considered in the optimization process. Since the participation factor fitting function is optimized only once at the beginning of the scheduling interval, the dimensions of the proposed scheduling optimization model are the same as those of the conventional method. The …

Research On Coordinated Control Strategy Employing D‑Statcom Based On Voltage Transient Rate Of Change, Wenglong Li, Xiu Yang, Xiaoli Zhao, Danzhen Gu, Xuejun Xiong, Yajun Zhang, Yuyao Feng
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
To solve serious problems such as equipment shutdown caused by voltage dips due to short-circuit faults in distribution networks, a coordinated control strategy employing a distribution network static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) based on the voltage transient rate of change is proposed. Firstly, the control of voltage by the traditional control strategy is improved. An undervoltage module is activated when a short-circuit fault occurs in the distribution network, increasing the reactive power output of D-STATCOM to suppress the voltage dip during the fault. At the end of the fault, an overvoltage module is activated to decrease the reactive power output of …

Temporal And Generational Changes In Depression Among Young American Adults, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Valentine Chung
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The prevalence of depression among young American adults has risen significantly over the past two decades, but the mechanisms that underlie the population-level changes in depressive symptoms severity remain unclear. We used data from the 2005–2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and hierarchical age–period–cohort (HAPC) analysis to examine developmental (i.e., age), life stage (i.e., period), and generational (i.e., cohort) distribution of depressive symptoms among American adults aged 20–30 years old over an 18-year period. Our model results indicate that the probability of either mild, moderate, or severe depression increased among young adult females and males between 2005 and …

All Decisions
The court granted a tenant's motion to vacate a final judgment and dismiss the non-payment petition without prejudice. The landlord, a housing authority, failed to use the mandatory Notice of Petition form prescribed by court rules, which resulted in a defective notice. The court found this was not a minor error but caused prejudice to the pro se tenant, as it omitted crucial information about available legal and financial resources. As a result, the final judgment and warrant of eviction were vacated, and the case was dismissed.

Changing Aspen Stand Structure Following Large Carnivore Restoration In Yellowstone, Luke E. Painter, Robert L. Beschta, William J. Ripple
Aspen Bibliography
Restoration of large carnivores in northern Yellowstone National Park in the late 20th century resulted in a sustained reduction of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis) and their herbivory, facilitating new growth of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) saplings. In 2020–21, we examined 87 randomly selected, previously sampled aspen stands across northern Yellowstone, combining random plots with stand-wide observations. Forty-three percent of stands contained a new cohort of small trees (5–10 cm dbh), the first documented recruitment of overstory aspen trees in northern Yellowstone since the 1940s. Both aspen saplings ( ≥2 m tall) and small trees were …
