Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective In China, as coal resource exploitation shifts gradually from eastern to western regions, coal bases in the western region play an increasingly notable foundational role in the basic energy supply in the national economy. However, due to its fragile ecosystems, the safe, efficient, and green coal exploitation of this region has long been challenged by the contradiction between the prevention and control of water hazards and the conservation of water resources. Therefore, advancing intelligent mine water control technology is identified as a crucial method to address the conflicts between coal mining and mine water in the western region. Additionally, …

Cocoa Polyphenols Modulate The Mouse Gut Microbiome In A Site-Specific Manner, Abby D. Benninghoff
Browse all Datasets
Background/Objectives: Dietary modulation of the gut microbiome is a promising strategy for mitigating gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Cocoa powder is rich in polyphenols, including (-)-epicatechin and (+)-catechin, which have been associated with beneficial effects on gut health and microbiome modulation. Importantly, changes in the bacterial populations associated with the gut mucosal layer may have different health impacts compared to changes in cecal or fecal microbiomes. This study investigated the effects of cocoa polyphenol supplementation on microbiome composition across the cecal, fecal, and mucosal compartments in a mouse model of colitis. Methods: …

This study explores the relationship between hand grip strength (HGS) and cognitive function in China’s middle-aged and elderly population. We employed a cross-sectional design using data from 4535 participants aged ≥ 45 years from the 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study national dataset. The relationships between HGS and various dimensions of cognitive function, as well as the association between HGS and cognitive impairment, were investigated using ordinary least squares regression models and logistic regression models. Dose–response relationships between HGS and cognitive impairment were modeled using restricted cubic spline curves. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the robustness …

Enhancement Of Ultrasonic Welding Of Bulk Carbon Nanotube-Metallic And Graphene-Metallic Conductors, Daniel L. Broderick
Enhancement Of Ultrasonic Welding Of Bulk Carbon Nanotube-Metallic And Graphene-Metallic Conductors, Daniel L. Broderick
Theses
Nanostructured carbon sheets comprising carbon nanotube (CNT) or graphene are appealing for electrode and antenna applications. Physical connection to metal conductors requires enhanced mechanical strength, electrical performance, and thermal capability. Ultrasonic welding is a viable technique to fabricate stable and robust bonds but requires methods to further reduce electrical resistance and improve mechanical strength. The present dissertation has advanced ultrasonic welding between bulk CNT electrodes and Cu foil by utilizing chemically doped junctions at the bond interface. Specifically, a selective doping strategy using KAuBr4 at the bonding regions between bulk CNT electrodes and Cu lowers the electrical contact resistance measured …

Intrinsic Motivation Teaching Experiences Of Middle School Educators 4 Years After The Pandemic, Carmy Aristor
Intrinsic Motivation Teaching Experiences Of Middle School Educators 4 Years After The Pandemic, Carmy Aristor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the educational landscape, significantly impacting middle school educators’ intrinsic motivation to teach. While research has extensively addressed the immediate impacts of the pandemic on education, there remains a gap in understanding how middle school educators make sense of their intrinsic motivation teaching experiences 4 years after the pandemic. Grounded in intrinsic motivation as the conceptual framework supported by the self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding of the intrinsic motivation teaching experiences of middle school educators 4 years after the pandemic. The central research question examined the lived …

Due to their clinical heterogeneity, nonspecific symptoms, and the limitations of existing biomarkers and imaging modalities, metabolic brain diseases (MBDs), such as mitochondrial encephalopathies, lysosomal storage disorders, and glucose metabolism syndromes, pose significant diagnostic challenges. This review examines the growing potential of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) derived from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) epigenetic profiling as a dynamic, cell-type-specific, minimally invasive biomarker approach for MBD diagnosis and monitoring. We review important technological platforms and their use in identifying CNS-specific DNA methylation patterns indicative of neuronal injury, neuroinflammation, and metabolic reprogramming, including cfMeDIP-seq, enzymatic methyl sequencing (EM-seq), and targeted bisulfite sequencing. By synthesizing current …
Patterns And Processes Behind Secretive Marshbird Movement, Abundance, And Distribution Across Southeastern Louisiana, Leah Moran
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Restoration and conservation of coastal Louisiana hinges on understanding the patterns and processes underlying habitat heterogeneity on the landscape and therefore the species that inhabits this region, including secretive marshbirds. Elusive in nature, this guild of birds has evolved under dynamic hydroperiods, and myriad plant communities present within wetlands. Only recently, however, has research focused on the role of hydrologic dynamics and vegetative structure and distribution on abundance, movement and detection of marshbirds, specifically within southeastern Louisiana. This study aimed to quantify the ecological patterns and processes, particularly hydrologic processes and landscape structure, driving breeding secretive marshbird movement, abundance and …

Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Teaching is currently rated as one of the topmost stressful occupations. Concerningly, chronic levels of stress can lead to poor mental and physical health, occupational burnout, and teacher attrition; all of which have a negative impact on student outcomes. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are commonly used to combat occupational stress by enhancing educator well-being. There is compelling evidence to support these types of interventions with teachers. However, the length of many MBIs may make them prohibitive for the average educator to participate in them. The literature suggests that a briefer format may be just as effective at reducing stress, but more …

Dual Action Dynamics: Assessing Hypopharyngeal Cancer Cell Survival Using Combination Chemotherapy, Luke Nieman
Biology Summer Fellows
Targeting glucose metabolism is an attractive strategy for cancer treatment, as cancer cells rely more heavily on glycolysis than oxidative phosphorylation, a phenomenon known as the Warburg Effect (Wang et al 2015). Reversing this metabolic reprogramming can impair cancer cell proliferation. NG52, a small-molecule inhibitor of PGK1, has been shown to effectively reverse the Warburg Effect and reduce cancer cell viability (Wycliffe et al. 2007). Paclitaxel, commonly Taxol, is a chemotherapeutic agent that disrupts mitotic spindle function, causing mitotic arrest and apoptosis (Markman et al 2005). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the individual and combined effects of NG52 …
