A Response To China'a "Legal Assessment Of U.S. Views On "Freedom Of Navigation", Raul Pete Pedrozo
A Response To China'a "Legal Assessment Of U.S. Views On "Freedom Of Navigation", Raul Pete Pedrozo
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
In August 2025, the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA) conducted a legal assessment of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. CIMA concluded that U.S. views on freedom of navigation lack “a basis in international law,” “seriously distort[] the interpretation and development of international law,” and embody “distinct illegality, unreasonableness, and double standards.” Part 1 of the assessment provides an overview of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. Part 2 “analyzes the gaps between U.S. perceptions of navigational rights and related practices and the rules of international law.” Part 3 “analyzes the legality of U.S. restrictions on the rights of …

Alternative Marine Fuels And Mrv Liability Under Unclos Part Xii, Andrey Chernov
Alternative Marine Fuels And Mrv Liability Under Unclos Part Xii, Andrey Chernov
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Shipping’s decarbonization depends not only on adopting alternative fuels but also on the reliability of the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems that underpin compliance. Ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) each introduce distinctive risks of error at the stages of certification, custody transfer, onboard measurement, and verification. At the same time, maritime law is increasingly data-driven. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) depend on reported fuel-use data, while the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime Regulation impose direct financial penalties for inaccurate reporting. This …

Efficacy Of Sirolimus Versus Paclitaxel-Coated Balloons For Coronary Revascularization: An Updated Meta-Analysis With Grade Assessment, Matthew Aldo Wijayanto, Christopher Daniel Tristan, Erlangga Masykur Kynaya, Annisa Aghnia Rahma, Putri Saskia Harimurti, Arwin Saleh Mangkuanom, Amir Aziz Alkatiri, Doni Firman, Bambang Budi Siswanto
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Drug-coated balloons are an emerging strategy for coronary revascularization. Despite their increasing use, the comparative efficacy of sirolimus- versus paclitaxel-coated balloons (SCB vs PCB) remains uncertain. This updated meta-analysis evaluated clinical and angiographic outcomes of SCB and PCB in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect was performed on August 28, 2025. Studies directly comparing SCB and PCB were included. The primary endpoint was target lesion failure (TLF), which was defined as cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction (TVMI), or target lesion revascularization (TLR). On follow-up angiography, secondary endpoints consisted of minimal lumen diameter (MLD), …
Mental Health And Psychosocial Well-Being Of Domestic Workers In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania: Why It Matters And Why We Should Make It A Priority, Magolanga Shagembe
Mental Health And Psychosocial Well-Being Of Domestic Workers In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania: Why It Matters And Why We Should Make It A Priority, Magolanga Shagembe
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
This phenomenological study explores the mental health and psychosocial well-being of domestic workers aged 15–18 years in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, the study examines how domestic workers negotiate self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, quality of relationships, environmental control, autonomy and resilience within unequal labor and care arrangements. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with 29 domestic workers and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that mental health and psychosocial well-being among domestic workers are shaped through complex interactions between structural vulnerability, interpersonal relationships, migration experiences, economic necessity, and future …

Becoming Modern: Households’ Electricity Use And Coping With Power Outages In Post-Socialist Dar Es Salaam, Emanuel Lukio Mchome
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Since its invention in the 1880s, electricity has been regarded as a pervasive driver of modern life. As scholars have shown elsewhere, ideas of modernity have influenced the provision and use of electricity in cities across the globe. By and large, scholars have examined electricity-modernism in terms of the construction of high-tech electric infrastructure by major actors. Those who have studied power failures This article examines electricity-modernism from the perspective of everyday electricity use and the experience of power outages, a lens rarely used by scholars. It draws from oral history interviews and archival sources to show how ideas of …

Transforming Cultural Narratives: The Role Of Faith-Based Organizations In Cultural Transformation For Peace In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Topisto Dominicus Mponzi, Ajali Nguyahambi Mustafa, Philemon Lugumiliza Sengati
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Abstract
The present article explores the role of Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in transforming cultural conflict within local communities. It draws on qualitative research conducted in Goma and its environs, which included key informant interviews and focus group discussions. It employs conflict transformation theory to explain the findings and illustrate how ritual reintegration, gender advocacy, theatre for conflict resolution, and interfaith dialogue influence actor recognition, moral dialogue, and local dialogue while embedded within power hierarchies and interdenominational conflicts. The article builds on the literature by adding ritual and theological ethics to conflict transformation …
Beyond The “Him-Her-Ing” Dichotomy: Unpacking Gendered Power Logics In Tanzanian Public Administration, Furaha Julius
Beyond The “Him-Her-Ing” Dichotomy: Unpacking Gendered Power Logics In Tanzanian Public Administration, Furaha Julius
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Despite decades of policy commitment to gender equity in Tanzania, substantive inequality within public administration endures. This study moves beyond quantifying women's underrepresentation to investigate the discursive and performative mechanisms that sustain a gendered power logic, termed him-her-ing. Situated within post-structural feminist theory and drawing on qualitative data from 21 in-depth interviews and a critical review of policy documents, this paper reveals how administrative practices—from leadership norms to routine task allocation—continuously reproduce a binary that privileges masculine-coded authority. Findings demonstrate that ostensibly neutral bureaucratic procedures, religious and customary influences, and informal patronage networks coalesce to marginalize feminine subjectivities, even within …
Medicalisation And The Practice Of Labour Augmentation In Mwanza, Tanzania, Latifa Abdulla Mohamed, Richard Sambaiga, Karen Marie Moland, Siri Lange
Medicalisation And The Practice Of Labour Augmentation In Mwanza, Tanzania, Latifa Abdulla Mohamed, Richard Sambaiga, Karen Marie Moland, Siri Lange
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Since the late 1900s, maternal health has increasingly been medicalised as a result of growing global concerns about poor maternal outcomes. An example of this medicalisation process is the use of oxytocin for labour augmentation. This practice of administering oxytocin to shorten the duration of labour is increasingly questioned. Feminist scholars have often questioned the routine use of oxytocin, depicting it as unnecessary and may constitute inappropriate use of the drug that undermines women’s autonomy and contributes to negative birth experiences. However, these feminist arguments overlook individual agency and the complex ways in which actors encounter and interact with oxytocin …

Rebuilding Tourism Resilience In The Post-Pandemic Era: Hotel Success Narratives In Tanzania, Godwin Lema, Judith Mshana
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
COVID-19 struck tourism more deeply than ever before and it is still less clear how tourist hotels in the remote setting of the global south navigated the crisis. Limited explored empirically and what remain less known is how the standard operating procedures were designed, perceived and effectively applied to inform resilience in specific tourist hotel setting. In this article we explore the role of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) played in rebuilding tourist hotels resilience. Karatu district Tanzania touristic space situates study context. Methodological approach adopted is qualitative research design with integration of interview, observation and pertinent hotel statistics in comparing …
Public Perception Of Community Policing In Tanzania, Bernadeta Killian, William John Walwa
Public Perception Of Community Policing In Tanzania, Bernadeta Killian, William John Walwa
Tanzania Journal of Sociology
Community policing is widely recognized as a viable means to address increasing security challenges. However, security problems in Tanzania have increased even though the police force has formalized and implemented a community policing structure called Ulinzi Shirikishi (participatory security) during the past 20 years. In this paper, both qualitative and quantitative methods are applied to analyse the community perception of Ulinzi Shirikishi to determine its viability. Located in the concept of social capital, it reveals that even though the police and government have favoured the use of Ulinzi Shirikishi to organize security, it is not the most preferred security structure …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This study aimed to assess the resistance status of Eimeria spp. in Vietnam to diclazuril and amprolium and to evaluate their effects on intestinal recovery following infection. One hundred 12-day-old chicks were randomly allotted to four groups: a non-infected negative control (NC), an infected untreated as positive control (PC), an infected group treated with diclazuril (DI), and an infected group treated with amprolium (AM). At day 14, chicks from all groups except NC were orally challenged with 2 × 10⁴ sporulated Eimeria oocysts (E. tenella, E. maxima, E. acervulina, and E. mitis). On day 7 …
