Investigating Global Lightning Observed From Ground And Space, And Its Relationship To Solar Activity, Megan Diane Mark

The extremes of lightning, specifically lightning with long-lasting continuing currents and lightning with extremely high peak currents, are investigated from both ground- and space-based observations. Additionally, the potential solar influence on lightning is investigated on large spatial scales.

Continuing currents may occur following the impulsive flow of current during a cloud-to-ground (CG) return stroke and are usually low amplitude (from a few amperes to a few kiloamperes) and long duration (several to hundreds of milliseconds). Remotely estimating their duration from the electromagnetic fields measured by existing ground-based lightning locating systems (LLSs) is not possible, but some space-based lightning detection systems …

Circadian rhythms affect almost every biological process from hormone secretion, gene expression, immune regulation, and metabolism. Studies show that disruption to these internal rhythms through irregular sleep, artificial sleep, and irregular sleep can significantly increase risk for chronic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, neurodegeneration, and cancer. Saliva presents a viable alternative for capturing biomarkers found through blood or cerebrospinal fluid, offering substantial utility for diagnostic and chronobiological profiling. Saliva contains hormones such as cortisol and melatonin while containing inflammatory markers that fluctuate rhythmically throughout the day. Fluoride has long been praised for its role in preventing dental caries, primarily through its effects on enamel remineralization and antibacterial effects. However, growing evidence from molecular and cellular studies suggests that excessive fluoride exposure, especially during tooth development, can lead to dental fluorosis and systemic toxicity. This paper examines the biological mechanisms underlying fluoride-induced dental fluorosis, with a focus on stress responses in ameloblasts, oxidative damage, impaired autophagy, and disrupted protein processing. It integrates data from in vitro, in vivo, and human studies to evaluate the cellular thresholds at which fluoride shifts from therapeutic to toxic. Systemic risks, including …

The Whipple operation is oftentimes considered one of the most challenging and complex abdominal operations, usually reserved for duodenal and hepatopancreatobiliary malignancies. In cases of duodenal and/or pancreatic trauma with disruption of the biliary systems, a Whipple reconstruction can be performed. Such operative traumas are rare and carry with them a high level of morbidity and mortality. This case report presents a challenging 46-day clinical course of a 22-year-old African American female, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, resulting in severe abdominal injuries. These injuries included a grade 3 duodenal injury, grade 4 pancreatic injury, and a grade 4 renal injury. …

Modeling hidden factors driving user preferences is crucial for recommendation yet challenging due to sparse rating data. While aligning preference factors from ratings and texts, as a solution, shows improvements, existing methods impose restrictive one-to-one factor correspondences and underutilize cross-modal interest signals. We propose an optimal transport (OT) approach to address these gaps. By modeling rating- and text-based preference factors as distributions, we compute an OT plan that captures their probabilistic relationships. This plan serves dual roles: 1) to regularize cross-modal preference factors without rigid correspondence assumptions, and 2) to blend preference signals across modalities through barycentric mapping. The task of Knowledge-Based Question Generation (KBQG) involves generating natural language questions from structured knowledge sources, posing unique challenges in balancing linguistic diversity and semantic relevance. Existing models often focus on maximizing surface-level similarity to ground-truth questions, neglecting the need for diverse syntactic forms and leading to semantic drift during generation. To overcome these challenges, we propose Refine-Reinforced Diverse Question Generation (R2DQG), a two-phase framework leveraging a generation-then-refinement paradigm. The Generator first constructs a diverse set of expressive templates using dependency parse tree similarity, capturing a wide range of syntactic patterns and styles. Black students' language and culture should matter inside the classroom, but the K-12 education system perpetuates racist ideologies that otherwise stifle and shame Black students and their identities. There is a disproportion between the number of White teachers and Black students in minority-serving K-12 institutions, and this racial mismatch severely influences Black students’ academic success. Abstract: This article is a glimpse into Young Adult Literature (YAL) pedagogy from a generational perspective. One university professor and two of her former students describe the processes, pedagogies, and challenges of introducing YAL theory, texts, and topics in university methods courses, as well as in the secondary English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. The former students will report on how they have taken ideologies and lessons learned from their university methods courses and implemented YAL in their ELA classrooms during their intern teaching semesters. Given the pressures, demands, and standardization teachers face in our sociopolitically charged times, teachers need opportunities to reflect and reimagine their instruction. Drawing on critical and related scholarship, we conceptualize critical humanizing writing pedagogy. We share our instructional moves as teacher educators for enacting humanizing writing pedagogy in a graduate course and supporting teachers to enact humanizing writing pedagogy in their K-12 classrooms. Specifically, we show how a graduate student and practicing teacher found ways to shift toward critical orientations as she navigated her school’s curriculum and state standards. In this paper, I unpack what the "Bury Your Gays" trope is, how it originated, its purpose, and its contemporary use and impacts. Through analysis of example novels and referenced scholarly articles, I explain how character deaths do or do not align with the trope, exemplifying the broader patterns of the trope and its impacts on young adults. Educators can learn to contextually identify the trope, gain the tools to spark classroom discussion through analysis, and identify examples of novels that disrupt this trope to be implemented in classroom libraries and reading lists.

This paper examines the interplay between hegemonic systems, curriculum, and individual consciousness in diverse life contexts. It underscores the need for critical thinking skills and self-examination to challenge hegemonic ideologies embedded within curriculum materials. This study explores methods to enhance student engagement and interest in high school English literature classes, focusing on the analysis of Willa Cather's novels. It addresses the challenge of motivating students to engage deeply with full-length novels, crucial for cultural and literary education. Employing a qualitative approach and triangulated data sources, the study reveals significant improvements in student engagement, comprehension, and literary analysis. Additionally, students demonstrated a heightened ability to connect with the themes and characters in the prose.
