Protein misfolding is a contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the specific role of impaired proteostasis is unclear. Here we show a robust accumulation of misfolded proteins in the mitochondria of human pancreatic islets from patients with T2D and elucidate its impact on β cell viability through the mitochondrial matrix protease LONP1. Quantitative proteomics studies of protein aggregates reveal that islets from donors with T2D have a signature resembling mitochondrial rather than endoplasmic reticulum protein misfolding. Many SARS-CoV-2 patients experience chronic pulmonary symptoms and long-term inflammation despite viral clearance. While these clinical manifestations have been linked to the dysregulation of the adaptive immune response, the underlying immunopathology remains poorly understood due to a lack of suitable animal models. To investigate long-term pulmonary consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, we used a genetic cross of 129 mice and C57BL/6 (B6)-K18-hACE2 transgene mice, a model previously shown to survive infection. 129xB6-K18-hACE2 mice or littermate controls were infected with a low dose (5 × 10² PFU) of ancestral SARS-CoV-2. Diverse sets of complete human genomes are required to construct a pangenome reference and to understand the extent of complex structural variation. Here we sequence 65 diverse human genomes and build 130 haplotype-resolved assemblies (median continuity of 130 Mb), closing 92% of all previous assembly gaps^1,2 and reaching telomere-to-telomere status for 39% of the chromosomes. We highlight complete sequence continuity of complex loci, including the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), SMN1/SMN2, NBPF8 and AMY1/AMY2, and fully resolve 1,852 complex structural variants. Background/Objectives: Low folate intake before and during pregnancy increases the risk of neural tube defects and other adverse outcomes. Gene variants such as MTHFR 677C>T (rs1801133) may increase risks associated with suboptimal folate intake. Pathogenic variants in the neuronal Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase transmembrane ion transporter (ATP1A3) cause a spectrum of neurological disorders including alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC). The most common de novo pathogenic variants in AHC are p.D801N (∼40 % of patients) and p.E815K (∼25 % of patients), which lead to early mortality by spontaneous death in mice. Nevertheless, knowledge of the development of clinically relevant neurological phenotypes without the obstacle of premature death, is critical for the identification of pathophysiological mechanisms and ultimately, for the testing of therapeutic strategies in disease models. In order to integrate resource and capability perspectives, prior literature has examined the interaction between managerial human capital (HC) and unit-level human capital resources (HCRs). A substantial body of research has demonstrated that managerial HC enhances the deployment of unit-level HCRs, thus generating synergistic values beyond those realized in their isolation. Previous literature, however, has largely overlooked the role of managerial HC in acquiring unit-level HCRs, neglecting strategic factor market theory and becoming susceptible to endogeneity issues. This self-study contributes to the field of art education by examining the tensions and possibilities within Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) through an arts-based lens. Framed as both a love letter and a palimpsestic work, this thesis reimagines professional development as a layered, living practice, rooted in collective care and criticality. Using collage as both method and metaphor, the study interweaves Freire’s dialogic praxis, bell hooks’ radical tenderness, and the marginalia of a weathered PLC handbook—redacted, annotated, and reassembled with lived experience. Juvenile delinquency tends to be higher in single-parent households (Kroese et al., 2021). Research investigating this phenomenon has found conflicting results on whether a juvenile has lower rates of delinquency with a custodial father (paternal hypothesis), custodial mother (maternal hypothesis), or whether gender is secondary to other factors. Similarly, some studies found that the interaction of the juvenile living with a same-gendered parent was associated with lower levels of delinquency. This essay revisits the idea of “right to work” by offering historical context of Florida’s passage of its 1944 right to work constitutional amendment. A brief overview of the history of the term right to work and its contested nature indicates how the phrase likely led to confusion especially in the arena of political economy. A close evaluation of the amendment and its incongruent nature reveals the intent of its proponents was to deceive voters with the “sweetest sounding” words of civil rights while weakening their ability to organize labor unions. Bankruptcy, Ownership Turnover And The Fate Of U.S. Coal Mines, Sara Guffey, Shuichiro Nishioka

This paper examines the survival dynamics of U.S. coal mines following ownership turnover, with particular attention to the role of financial distress and bankruptcy procedures. Using mine-level data on production, employment, and ownership from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, we show that mines transferred through private workouts are substantially more likely to close within a few years. In contrast, court-supervised transfers reduce the likelihood of rapid shutdown relative to private transactions, but their survival rates remain indistinguishable from mines without ownership turnover. Florida’s emergency medical services (EMS) and fire service agencies face an unprecedented workforce crisis. Compounded by demographic shifts, rising call volumes, and mounting mental health challenges, many EMS agencies are struggling to recruit and retain qualified personnel. Existing models of recruitment—centered on short-term bonuses or messaging emphasizing sacrifice—are failing to resonate with new generations of workers, who prioritize mental wellness, career progression, and work-life balance. Additionally, outdated training pipelines and a decline in volunteerism, especially in rural areas, have weakened the traditional workforce structure, creating gaps that threaten the stability of emergency response systems statewide.

In this study, particles of ground grape seeds were utilized to adsorb phosphate ions from a prepared solution, aiming to reduce phosphate concentration. Through a series of adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent concentration, initial phosphate ion concentration, temperature, and pH on the phosphate ion uptake were studied. The removal efficiency of the phosphate ion decreased from 77 to 61% as a 25 to 45 °C increment in temperature was observed, which indicated the exothermicity in the adsorption process. The phosphate ion movement onto the adsorbent surface that exhibited the highest uptake value favored a neutral reaction environment with …

This dissertation examined the impact of a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) on high school students’ perceived physical, mental, emotional, and academic wellness. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 701 pre-surveys, 175 post-surveys, 603 post-intervention impact surveys, and two student focus group interviews. The yearlong CSPAP intervention was implemented using the CDC’s seven-step framework at a public charter high school during the 2024–2025 academic year. Quantitative results revealed statistically significant improvements in students’ self-reported physical health, mental wellness, emotional resilience, and academic engagement, with mental health and perceived enjoyment of physical activity showing the strongest gains. This study was conducted in Homa Bay Sub County, Kenya to explore the adoption of ICT among senior teachers, aged between 45-60 years, in teaching and learning of science. A qualitative research approach using a case study design was employed. Evaluating Quadrupedal Locomotion In Bats: A Geometric Morphometric Comparison Of Vertebral Adaptations Across Mammals, Jessica Upham

Flight is the primary locomotion of bats, while quadrupedal locomotion is not often observed and is widely variable among bats. Frugivorous bats in Pteropodidae are more efficient climbers than frugivorous bats in Phyllostomidae and insectivorous bats in Vespertilionidae, while phyllostomids and vespertilionids are better at walking on horizontal surfaces. The aim of this study is to investigate whether bats with differing modes of nonflight locomotion also exhibit disparity in thoracolumbar vertebral morphology. Using geometric morphometrics, we compared the thoracolumbar vertebral shapes of these bat families with other terrestrial and arboreal mammals. Prompting Progress: An Eight-Week Ai Literacy Cohort For Academic Advisors – A Program Evaluation Report, Leo S. Lo

As generative AI floods higher education, academic advisors—often the first humans students consult—must learn to partner with the technology, not compete with it. This eight-week, community-of-practice pilot at the University of New Mexico gave 15 advisors guided access to GPT-4 for degree planning, policy queries, and email drafting. Pre/post surveys showed familiarity rising from 2.50 to 3.50, overall AI-literacy from 2.71 to 3.90, and confidence from 3.07 to 4.00 on a 5-point scale. Workflow logs documented recruitment emails produced in minutes rather than hours. Participants highlighted ethical guard-rails as a new competency, not an afterthought. Teachers’ beliefs about mathematics can shape how they approach teaching, learning, and assessment in mathematics classrooms. This study examined Australian pre-service teachers’ (PSTs’) epistemological beliefs about mathematics. A total of 18 PSTs enrolled in Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching (secondary mathematics) programs participated in the study by answering prompt questions in an open-ended questionnaire. The participants’ responses were content analyzed by categorizing the views evident in the responses into four pre-defined mathematical orientations: formalism-related, scheme-related, process-related, and application-related. Findings have shown that the dominant beliefs for the participants reflected process- or application- related orientations to mathematics. These findings …
