Later Wittgenstein’S Metaphysics, Jeremy Barris Aug 2025

Later Wittgenstein’S Metaphysics, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

Introduction

Ludwig Wittgenstein, in different ways in his earlier and later work, famously denies the general meaningfulness and consequently the legitimacy of traditional philosophical questions. Accordingly, he also denies the meaningfulness and legitimacy of any metaphysics. I focus here on Wittgenstein’s later view. In that view, words and statements are given their meanings by their uses in specific contexts of everyday life. As a result, any attempt to use words to talk or think about anything outside of those contexts literally deprives those words of their meaning. But traditional philosophical questions, and metaphysical questions and statements in particular, are characterized …

Deltaic Engineering-Induced Accumulation Hides Erosion In Response To Fluvial Sediment Decline In The Yangtze Submarine Shoal, Haifei Yang, Lu Wang, Kehui Xu, Wenxiang Zhang, Benwei Shi, Shilun Yang, Ya Ping Wang Aug 2025

Deltaic Engineering-Induced Accumulation Hides Erosion In Response To Fluvial Sediment Decline In The Yangtze Submarine Shoal, Haifei Yang, Lu Wang, Kehui Xu, Wenxiang Zhang, Benwei Shi, Shilun Yang, Ya Ping Wang

Faculty Publications

Worldwide river deltas are impacted by human activities and climatic change, but it has been challenging to quantify their contributions due to nonlinear natural processes and a lack of long-term geomorphological data. Time-series bathymetric data were collected at submarine Hengsha Shoal in the Yangtze Delta during 11 repeat surveys over 60 yr. Our results show that the minimum riverine sediment supply to maintain the shoal's morphology was 229–258 Mt yr−1. Without human impacts, it would have been experiencing net erosion since the operation of the Three Gorges Dam in 2003. However, this shoal has been growing in certain …

Impact Of River Reconnection For Coastal Restoration On Nitrate Reduction In Brackish Marsh Soils And Bay-Bottom Sediments In Coastal Louisiana, Usa, Mercedes M. Pinzón, John R. White Aug 2025

Impact Of River Reconnection For Coastal Restoration On Nitrate Reduction In Brackish Marsh Soils And Bay-Bottom Sediments In Coastal Louisiana, Usa, Mercedes M. Pinzón, John R. White

Faculty Publications

Wetlands provide important ecosystem services, including improving surface water quality through nutrient removal. Louisiana has experienced ~ 4800 km2 of coastal wetland loss between 1932 and 2016 due to high relative sea level rise and reduced sediment from the Mississippi River due to levees. The 2023 LA Coastal Master Plan aims to restore Louisiana’s degraded coastline through restoration projects, including sediment diversions or river reconnection. The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project will reconnect the river sediment-laden water with the coastal wetlands of Barataria Basin to nourish degrading marshes. However, the diversion will also deliver substantial nitrate (NO3−) to …

Subtropical Marine Cloud Brightening Suppresses The El Niño–Southern Oscillation, C. Xing, S. Stevenson, J. Fasullo, C. Harrison, C. Chen, J. Wan, J. Coupe, C. Pfleger Aug 2025

Subtropical Marine Cloud Brightening Suppresses The El Niño–Southern Oscillation, C. Xing, S. Stevenson, J. Fasullo, C. Harrison, C. Chen, J. Wan, J. Coupe, C. Pfleger

Faculty Publications

Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and marine cloud brightening (MCB) are two proposed methods of compensating for greenhouse gas-induced warming by reflecting incoming solar radiation. However, their effects on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a critical mode of climate variability, are poorly understood. Here we use ensembles of climate model simulations to show that deploying MCB in the subtropical eastern Pacific dramatically reduces ENSO amplitude by approximately 61%, while SAI has a negligible impact. MCB increases cloud albedo, which cools the subtropical eastern Pacific and triggers a loss of moist static energy. This cooling promotes atmospheric subsidence, dries the tropical Pacific, …

Rate Of Sea-Level Rise And Sediment Characteristics Modulate Deltaic River-Tide Interactions, Peter Bacopoulos, Celalettin E. Ozdemir, Matthew Hiatt Aug 2025

Rate Of Sea-Level Rise And Sediment Characteristics Modulate Deltaic River-Tide Interactions, Peter Bacopoulos, Celalettin E. Ozdemir, Matthew Hiatt

Faculty Publications

Due to sea-level rise, small river-dominated deltas (< 100 km2) are expected to become more exposed to tidal influences in the future. However, there remains a knowledge gap in the impending hydrodynamics of such deltas, particularly with the interactions between river and tidal flows. In addition to sea-level rise, river-tide interactions in these deltas depend on their morphology, which is influenced by the sand proportion in the particulate matter delivered by rivers. This study investigates river-tide interactions predicted for small deltas formed by different sand-to-mud ratios under various sea-level rise scenarios. Delta morphologies were generated using reduced-order complexity model (DeltaRCM), …

Effects Of Phenolic Compounds From Sorghum Bran, Grape Seed And Green Tea On Dough Rheology And Bread Quality In Reduced-Salt Formulations, Jinrong Wang, Gengjun Chen, Yonghui Li, Zijian Wu

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

This study investigated the effects of phenolic compounds (0.5 %–1.5 %) extracted from sumac sorghum bran (SBE), grape seed (GSE), green tea (GTE) on the quality of reduced-salt bread (0.8 % salt). To understand the mechanisms underlying these effects, the influence of SBE, GSE, and GTE on dough mixing properties, extensional properties and gluten surface hydrophobicity were characterized. SDS-PAGE analysis was employed to examine protein cross-linking and interactions between phenolics and gluten. The results showed that phenolics primarily interacted with gluten through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Specifically, these compounds exhibited preferential binding to high-molecular- weight proteins in glutenin macropolymers …

Beyond World War I: Post-War Trauma In Agatha Christie’S The Mysterious Affair At Styles, Alayna Puckett Aug 2025

Beyond World War I: Post-War Trauma In Agatha Christie’S The Mysterious Affair At Styles, Alayna Puckett

All Theses

This thesis reexamines Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles as a literary response and representation to World War I, arguing that it deserves recognition as a novel of wartime trauma rather than being confined solely to the realm of popular detective fiction. Influenced by Christie’s firsthand experiences as a wartime nurse, the novel subtly weaves themes of personal wartime experience and trauma into its plot, characters, and setting. Christie’s protagonist, Mr. Hastings, represents the returning soldier attempting to reintegrate into society, while Hercule Poirot—a Belgian refugee—embodies the war’s broader displacement and disruption. Set during World War I in a …

Factors Associated With Postpartum Depression Among Women Attending Postnatal Clinics In A Tertiary Care Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya, Cecilia Muthoni Njoga

Master of Medicine in Family Medicine

Background

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major mental health disorder affecting women during the postpartum period with a global prevalence of up to 17.22%. This prevalence has been shown to be higher in low and middle-income countries. In Kenya, about a fifth of women are affected. PPD can lead to poor infant growth and interference with maternal-child bonding. Additionally, women with PPD experience a lower quality of life and their children have an increased risk of developing and psychotic disorders later in life. Understanding the factors associated with PPD is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention. The study aimed to …

Using Tier 1 Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support (Mtss) For Student Behavior To Decrease Discipline Referrals Among Black Ninth-Grade Students, Lauren L. Merck

All Dissertations

I begin this dissertation with an introduction to a problem of practice that affects many schools in America- inequity in school discipline. After reviewing literature that explains why this is an important research topic, I share information about the research site, Mountain View High School (MVHS). It was seen that majority of the discipline referrals written over the school year was from ninth-grade students. When looking closer at the ninth-grade students, it also was determined that Black/ African American students were also receiving a disproportionate amount of discipline referrals compared to their White peers. After introducing the problem of practice …

Specificity Of Interaction Of Antimicrobial Peptide With Cell Membrane, Srishhti Kumar Jha Aug 2025

Specificity Of Interaction Of Antimicrobial Peptide With Cell Membrane, Srishhti Kumar Jha

Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing global health threat due to its rising incidence worldwide. Resistant microbial infections have become difficult to treat and pose serious risks to patients. In 2019, AMR was responsible for approximately 1.27 million deaths globally, with numbers continuing to rise. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the urgent need for new antibiotics with novel mechanisms of action and low toxicity to combat this issue. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) represent a promising solution. These peptides exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and rapid killing kinetics, reducing the likelihood of resistance development. AMPs primarily target bacterial cell membranes. Their …

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)

Utah faces its fair share of environmental problems. Top concerns among residents are issues of drought, air quality, and the drying of the Great Salt Lake (1). However, research suggests that the impacts of environmental issues like disasters, pollution, resource overuse and climate change are not shared equally across society (2). This is a challenge for environmental justice, which maintains the need for fair treatment and outcomes for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, and class, with respect to the enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies (3). Put more simply, everyone is entitled to a clean and healthy environment …

Hotter, longer summers and changing weather patterns in the United States are bringing more than just sweat and discomfort. In May 2025, a summer heat wave of 107⁰F hit Austin, Texas, and in humid Houston and San Antonio, Texas, temperatures felt over 100⁰ for several days. Normally, these temperatures don’t come until July and August. With temperatures reaching these marks early and heavy rains coming, mosquito activity and ranges expand. Many state and federal health officials report a rise in mosquito-borne illnesses across the US and globe in the last five years.

Sex Differences In The Risk Of Developing Alzheimer Disease, Cognitive Trajectories, And Relationships Between Cognition And Pathological Burden, Carling G. Robinson Aug 2025

Sex Differences In The Risk Of Developing Alzheimer Disease, Cognitive Trajectories, And Relationships Between Cognition And Pathological Burden, Carling G. Robinson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Prior work suggests females may develop Alzheimer disease (AD) dementia at a higher rate than males, and that this effect may interact with apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4 genotype. However, this work has often been limited by imprecise clinical diagnoses and a lack of AD biomarkers. In addition to the frequency of dementia, there are mixed reports on whether sex impacts rates of cognitive decline. Further, females consistently exhibit greater accumulation of AD pathological biomarkers, particularly tau, than males. It has been theorized that females initially demonstrate resilience to AD pathology, maintaining cognitive functioning longer than males, but experiencing a steeper cognitive …

Predicting Miner Localization In Underground Mine Emergencies Using A Hybrid Cnn-Lstm Model With Data From Delay-Tolerant Network Databases, Patrick Nonguin, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria Aug 2025

Predicting Miner Localization In Underground Mine Emergencies Using A Hybrid Cnn-Lstm Model With Data From Delay-Tolerant Network Databases, Patrick Nonguin, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Underground mining environments are highly hazardous, often prone to gas explosions, cave-ins, and fires that may trap miners during emergencies. The accurate, real-time localization of miners is vital for effective self-escape and rescue operations. Although the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 mandates communication and tracking systems, most current solutions rely on low-power devices and line-of-sight methods that are ineffective in GPS-denied, dynamic subsurface conditions. Delay-Tolerant Networking (DTN) has emerged as a promising alternative by supporting message relay through intermittent links. In this work, we propose a deep learning framework that combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) …

Co-Creating Play:Utilizing Comics To Potentialize Participatory Self-Determination In Marginilized Young Adults, Marlin Mcknight

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Storytelling has long served as a vital mechanism for preserving cultural heritage, transmitting values, and fostering intergenerational connection (Moeshlin, 2024). Despite this significance, graphic narratives such as comics and graphic novels have been historically marginalized—dismissed as trivial “children’s media” or reduced to entertainment rather than recognized as culturally resonant tools (McCloud, 1993). This marginalization intensified as comics evolved to depict adult themes and, at times, harmful stereotypes, triggering social backlash that stigmatized their utility for younger audiences (Segran, 2020). Consequently, scholarly exploration of comics’ therapeutic potential has stagnated, hindered by the medium’s tumultuous history. This study bridges this gap by …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stall and spin accidents represent a persistent safety concern in General Aviation, with approximately 41% resulting in fatalities despite their relatively low occurrence. This study analyzes 1,079 General Aviation stall and spin accidents from 2008 to 2023 using the National Transportation Safety Board accident database. Our analysis identified the top phases of flight, injury outcomes, and causal factors in stall/spin accidents. Findings indicate that over 93% of stall/spin events involved General Aviation aircraft, with most accidents occurring during initial climb, takeoff, or low-altitude maneuvering. Pilot-related control errors, especially poor airspeed and angle-of-attack management, were the most common causes. To assess …

Engineered Interfaces For Enhanced Transient Liquid Phase Bonding In Electronics Assembly, John Russell Harris Aug 2025

Engineered Interfaces For Enhanced Transient Liquid Phase Bonding In Electronics Assembly, John Russell Harris

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growing applications in transportation make power density a key optimization target in the power electronics industry. More power in a shrinking environment leads to high heat flux and junction temperatures that damage silicon-based switching devices. Temperatures approaching 175℃ can result in false triggering of the device’s activated state, resulting in short circuits. Developing wide bandgap semi-conductors, such as gallium nitride and silicon carbide, are less susceptible to this complication as the energy from elevated temperature is a smaller fraction of what would be required to trigger the device. These devices are projected to function reliably in environments of up to …
