First Regional Library Celebrates 75 Years, David Brown

In 1947, the Citizen’s Library Movement of DeSoto County was formed to advocate for public libraries in the communities of Northwest Mississippi. These early visionaries saw the advantages of having a regional library system to share resources and materials. The Movement’s efforts led to the Supervisors of DeSoto, Lafayette, Panola, and Tate Counties to form First Regional Library in 1950, the first multi-county library system in Mississippi. In 1968, Tunica County joined the library system.

These communities have shown much growth in the past 75 years, and First Regional Library has grown with the communities it serves.. When First Regional …

In 1999, the Mississippi State University Libraries established the MegaResource School Librarian Workshop, a technology-focused workshop that provided K-12 librarians an opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Over the past 25 years, the workshop has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of school librarians, however, the popularity of the workshop and limited spacing meant there was often a waiting list, creating an opportunity for other institutions to help fill this need. Over the past two decades, Mississippi public libraries have experienced a significant shift in how patrons access technology and information. Once central to bridging the digital divide, public computers and in-person reference services are now in decline, reflecting broader trends in digital access and self-service information seeking. Between 2013 and 2023, computer use sessions in Mississippi libraries dropped by 75%, while reference transactions decreased by over 50% from 2003-2023. This article explores the evolution of library technology services in Mississippi public libraries and offers a forward-thinking vision for the future. Traditional agricultural style food plots, or wildlife openings, are widely used for wildlife management and hunting opportunities on public and private lands in the Southeastern United States. These habitats are often cited as beneficial for game and nongame wildlife, but there are few published studies examining nongame bird use of food plots in recent decades. Modern concerns about the ecological costs of food plots, particularly fragmentation and invasive non-native species, warrant a new examination of this practice. Background and objective:

Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the gold standard for myocardial reperfusion in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Numerous studies have shown that thrombus aspiration can prevent distal embolization and reducing the risk of microvascular obstruction (MVO). Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for the evaluation of MVO. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thrombus aspiration in STEMI patients as an adjunctive technique to primary PCI in reducing the incidence and extent of MVO evaluated by CMR.

This disclosure describes techniques to develop and evaluate AI agents capable of robust operation in multi-human environments. In a data collection phase, group chat or virtual meeting experiments are organized where participants roleplay conversations to accomplish predefined tasks such as scheduling a meeting, planning an event, etc. Communication transcripts from such experiments capture the complexities of group interactions. A translation lookaside buffer (TLB) is a fast cache that stores recent page table entries to enable efficient translation between virtual and physical memory addresses. TLB entries include architected hint bits that can be used to provide information about the nature of the memory access. Current TLB implementations associate hint bits with physical pages, limiting their flexibility. This disclosure describes techniques to dynamically control hint bits by embedding them directly within the virtual address. New instructions can be introduced that either directly specify the hint bits or provide a register holding them. The provision of such new instructions enables hints …

This publication describes techniques for reducing shot cuts in videos generated by diffusion models, particularly in image-to-video applications. Shot cuts are abrupt transitions between distinct scenes of video. Shot cuts may be unexpected and may be irrelevant to provided input. To reduce shot cuts, a diffusion model may begin a diffusion process from a static video, where the frames of the static video may be noised instances of an input image. The diffusion model may also insert the input image as a first frame of the generated video, anchoring the output to the input. By ‘anchoring’ the output video and …

A novel iron-based phosphate cement (IPC), derived from iron-rich smelting slag (ISS), was developed as a sustainable and efficient binder for the stabilization/solidification of trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺). The mechanical properties, hydration behavior, microstructure, leaching toxicity, chromium chemical forms, and environmental safety of chromium-stabilized iron phosphate cement (CIPC) were thoroughly evaluated. The results showed that, with a mass ratio of ISS to ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) of 2.0, and even with the addition of 20 % chromium nitrate nonahydrate (CN), the compressive strength of CIPC reached 4.2 MPa after curing for 28 d. NOAA’s Office of Response & Restoration’s Disaster Preparedness Program partnered with CRRC to facilitate a webinar entitled “NOAA Hurricane Preparedness Summit 2025” on two consecutive days: April 23 and 24, 2025. The purpose was to improve NOAA’s posture for the upcoming hurricane season by identifying best practices and lessons learned from the 2024 season, recognizing challenges related to these major weather events, and learning about plans, kits, tools and other resources for improving personal preparedness. The Summit also included plenary presentations outlining other topics such as NWS Products and Services, operational spotlights, and technological innovations, and tools.

Active Outdoor Play-Based Learning (AOPL) is an evidence-based approach that integrates active play, outdoor environments, and academic goals. It supports not only curricular learning but also students’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. This white paper shares practical insights from a systematic review of 21 empirical studies (2008-2024) on AOPL implementation in formal school settings.

AOPL is a pedagogical strategy that uses play and the outdoors as meaningful contexts for learning. Teachers who implement AOPL build connections between curriculum and students’ natural curiosity while leveraging the benefits of being outside¹.

Trauma responsive practices are a type of educational practice currently being utilized in our schools. Our students come to school every day with some type of trauma which is a negative event that a child experiences. Types of traumatic experiences could be in the form of a natural disaster, car accident, or some type of abuse. The current study examined barriers that schools experience when implementing trauma responsive practices. The schools were examined further to investigate whether or not there were differences in barriers in rural, suburban, and urban school districts in the state of Indiana.

Difficulty in addressing the impact of trauma for students often makes educators feel ineffective and is a contributing factor in educators leaving the profession. This study examines gender role conflict (GRC) in women within the context of feminine norms, with a focus on developing a scale designed to measure GRC derived from feminine ideology that may contribute to gender related stress. The primary research questions address the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Gender Role Conflict Scale for Women (GRCS-W). Additional research questions examine the relationship between feminine gender role conflict and psychological well-being, and whether any racial differences exist in self-reported GRC. Sponsorship is vital for advancing women's careers but is often inconsistently applied. Limited programs for women seeking leadership roles and a lack of sponsors can hinder progress. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data from 73 participants with qualitative insights. Sponsors advocate for protégés, emphasizing visibility, promotion, and networking, while mentorship offers guidance and coaching. Many leadership roles confuse sponsorship with mentorship, as noted by Helms et al. (2016). However, the key difference lies in influence. Among the various strategies proposed to achieve this goal, one promising approach is the conversion of carbon dioxide into organic fuels using photocatalysts. Despite the legal distinction between competence to stand trial (CST) and criminal responsibility (CR), the potential for jurors to conflate these constructs due to pretrial publicity (PTP) remains an under-examined issue in forensic psychology research. Therefore, the current study investigated whether exposure to PTP about a defendant’s CST influences jurors’ CR verdicts. A national sample of jury-eligible adults (N = 598) was recruited through Prolific. Coastal areas present unique challenges for human-wildlife coexistence due to their shared use by people and marine species. The Homer Spit in Homer, AK (59.6481° N, 151.5299° W) is a projection of land into Kachemak Bay on which lodging, restaurants, campgrounds, RV parks, fishing, and a variety of coastal activities exist or occur, especially during the summer months. Two of the most popular nearshore marine mammals that attract visitors are sea otters (Enhydra lutris) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).
