Background Cancer cachexia, a multifactorial syndrome characterized by unintentional weight loss, is a frequent complication of cancer that impacts patients' quality of life and survival.

Methods In this retrospective review, we evaluated the landscape of clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov for the consideration of potential factors contributing to biological human heterogeneity in their design and analyses.

Results Among clinical trials registered from 1995-2024, we observed increased inclusion of female participants, but lack of reporting of sex as a biological variable. Background/Objectives: Pica, the compulsive ingestion of non-nutritive substances, has long been observed in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). This behavior is particularly noted in adults, including pregnant women, and poses both diagnostic and management challenges. We conducted a review of studies from the past decade to evaluate the epidemiology and nature of pica in adult IDA patients and the outcome of various treatment strategies on anemia and pica behaviors. UNLABELLED: Diagnostic delays in patients with brain cancer are common and can impact patient outcome. Development of a blood-based assay for detection of brain cancers could accelerate brain cancer diagnosis. In this study, we analyzed genome-wide cell-free (cfDNA) fragmentomes, including fragmentation profiles and repeat landscapes, from the plasma of individuals with (n = 148) or without (n = 357) brain cancer. Background: Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a congenital neurocutaneous disorder characterized by angiomas of the face, choroid, and leptomeninges. Seizures in these children often present within the first 2 years of life. SWS is typically unilateral, but bilateral SWS occurs in approximately 15% of cases. Bilateral SWS is associated with earlier seizure onset and poorer cognitive, developmental, and functional outcomes. More than half of children with SWS develop drug-resistant epilepsy requiring surgical intervention. Hemispherotomy has been established as a successful treatment for unilateral SWS, but resective surgery has traditionally not been considered a treatment option for patients with bilateral disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Elderly patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) face a disproportionately high burden of morbidity and mortality. While endovascular coiling is often favored in this population, direct comparisons with surgical clipping are limited. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare outcomes of clipping versus coiling in SAH patients aged ≥ 60 years.

METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases identified studies comparing the two treatments in this age group. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for mental health providers all over the world, since they had to abruptly change from in person assistance to remote meetings. The adverse effects from social isolation were critical in Latinx populations such as Brazil and Mexico, since these countries faced a great amount of social, health, and economic burden during the pandemic, which affected families' access to care and increased inappropriate parenting practices.

Pregnancy is a time of high patient motivation to initiate treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Hepatic drug metabolism can be altered by pregnancy and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We aimed to examine the impact of HCV during pregnancy on methadone dosing. Retrospective chart review of all pregnant patients with OUD admitted for initiation of methadone from 1/2020-6/2022. Associations were examined using Student's T-tests, chi-squared tests, Fisher's exact tests and univariate and multivariate linear regression. In cell biology, statistical analysis means testing the hypothesis that there was no effect. This weak form of hypothesis testing neglects effect size, is universally misinterpreted, and is disastrously prone to error when combined with high-throughput cell biology. The solution is for analysis of measurements to start and end with an interpretation of effect size. The liver stores substantial numbers of neutral lipid organelles termed lipid droplets (LDs) that accumulate within hepatocytes in response to chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption leading to hepatic steatosis. Mass spectrometry analysis of LDs isolated from EtOH-damaged rat livers revealed a substantial reduction in the valosin-containing protein ATPase (VCP/p97) that acts to remove targeted proteins from cellular membranes for degradation. Experimental disruption of VCP function resulted in an increase in LD content in hepatocytes and mouse livers along with a marked increase in LD-associated hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD17β13) known to contribute to hepatic steatosis. Repeatable methods capable of quantifying Arctic surface water extent at high resolutions are important, but still require development. Here, we present a study using very-high resolution (VHR) X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from Capella Space for fine-scale semantic segmentation of Arctic surface water features. Our study proposes a modified U-Net encoder-decoder model for this task, optimized using the Nadam algorithm. Otsu thresholding was leveraged to rapidly generate 512 × 512-pixel patches for the U-Net, resulting in an efficient and automated training pipeline. This study explored the physical and mental health-related quality of life (QOL) of a US multistate cohort of certified peer specialists, and factors associated with health-related work absences among those employed in peer specialist positions.

Patient participation in support services remains low despite the readily available psychosocial resources. The Emotional Well-Being Tool (EWBT), a validated psychological distress screening tool, is often used in a Midwest cancer clinic, yet it was noted that its supportive services were underutilized.

Compassion fatigue has physical, emotional, and psychological impacts on nurses working in intensive care units. Debriefing sessions can be used to help reduce compassion fatigue by allowing nurses on a cardiac intensive care unit to discuss their thoughts and feelings after the death of a patient who has had a complex hospital stay or traumatic death.

Silicon has a striking similarity to carbon and is found in plant cells. However, there is no specific role that has been assigned to silicon in the life cycle of plants. The amount of silicon in plant cells is species specific and can reach levels comparable to macronutrients. Silicon is used extensively in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and the digital revolution, and thus can serve as an informational molecule such as nucleic acids.
