Summer 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

This capstone develops and evaluates a trauma-informed training for RBTs and caregivers in outpatient ABA clinics serving children with ASD and anxiety. Grounded in MOHO, the seven-module program teaches trigger→support mapping, sensory strategies, visual tools, and brief co-regulation routines. Findings show improved knowledge and confidence, with recommendations to embed a fidelity rubric, booster sessions, and ready-to-use templates.

SHADE Lab: Stigma, Health, Attitudes, Diversity, Ethnicities Lab

The SHADE lab examines antecedents and consequences of prejudice, stigma, and bias. We use perspectives that examine both high and low status group members’ responses to discrimination and how this influences cognition, health, well-being, and intergroup relations. Our lab employs a variety of methodologies including both online and in lab experiments, longitudinal designs, and surveys. Across our research we utilize behavioral, self-report, and physiological reactivity measures to examine the broad consequences of stigma and bias.

Video modeling has become an effective tool for practitioners in teaching a variety of essential skills to individuals, especially children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Video modeling is not only considered a highly effective intervention for skill acquisition, but it is also a consistent, practical, and cost-effective evidence-based teaching strategy utilized by many professionals. This report evaluates the economic impact of federal research funding received by West Virginia University’s four campuses. In 2023, WVU secured $148 million in federal research grants (excluding Facilities and Ad ministrative Costs), supporting approximately 3,171 jobs and contributing $250.2 million to West Virginia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), including $92.1 million in labor income. Around 30% of the labor income and 42% of the GDP impact extended beyond host counties through supply chains and local labor markets. Adaptation To Climate-Induced Macrofinancial Risks: Top-Down And Bottom-Up Solutions, Demis Legrenzi, Emanuele Ciola, Davide Bazzana

This paper examines the macro-financial effects of alternative adaptation strategies in response to exogenous shocks in labor productivity caused by climate change. Using a Stock-Flow-Consistent Agent-Based model calibrated to U.S. data, we analyze two main scenarios: (i) a change in the conduct of monetary policy to account for climate-related damages, and (ii) a firm-level adaptation strategy that internalizes expected climate losses. We evaluate both scenarios under the assumption of either homogeneous or heterogeneous climate shocks. Our results indicate that both strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on output and wealth distribution. However, their performance is significantly worse …

Ineffective nurse leadership has been attributed to low nurse satisfaction, a decrease in morale, and can increase nurse turnover rates. Patient care and safety can be affected when nurses are dissatisfied with their workplace. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase nurses’ satisfaction rates on three behavioral health units by providing leadership classes for nursing leaders to attend to help combat nurse dissatisfaction rates. The methods utilized a quantitative design with pre- and post-intervention measurements. How can we effectively resolve social justice issues in art education if we do not listen to the voices and perspectives of the students these issues directly impact? Foundational theory for this research has been the works by Paulo Freire (1970/2017), Antonia Darder (2012), and bell hooks (1994). Background

Implementation failure is a major barrier to program success. It is widely acknowledged that context matters—individual, community, and organizational norms, values, environment, and priorities influence successful program implementation. A mismatch between how the program was intended to be delivered and the constraints of the context in which it was delivered is a major cause of implementation failure. The barriers to implementation are usually understood after a program has failed. Tremor is a common neurological condition that significantly impairs the quality of life for millions. Despite this prevalence, the underlying mechanisms of its propagation remain poorly understood, and current treatment options often rely on trial-and-error methods. Moreover, the most common type, Essential Tremor (ET), presents a unique challenge due to its heterogeneity--patients exhibit a wide range of symptoms, severities, and responses to treatment. This thesis primarily advances tremor understanding through computational modeling, with a secondary focus on data-driven subtyping of ET via cluster analysis. This paper addresses how Generative AI-mediated policy framing influences insurance outcomes and the broader adjudication ecosystem. We explore a hybrid decision-making framework that combines an XGBoost model for initial claim likelihood prediction and OpenAI’s GPT-4 for policy application. This approach is tested using two distinct policies: a contextual risk-benefit assessment (CRBA) and an equal needs and fairness evaluation (ENFE). The study specifically analyzes how GenAI’s interpretation and application under these different policy framings impact claim approval rates and associated financial liabilities. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative literature review and qualitative case study analysis, this capstone investigates the developmental pathways of serial killers. The study investigates a variety of biological, psychological, and sociological elements—such as genetic predispositions, neurological disorders, childhood traumas, and environmental stressors—interact to shape serial killers. Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with no disease-modifying treatment. Mutations in ATP1A3, encoding an Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase subunit, cause 70% of AHC cases. Here, we present prime editing (PE) and base editing (BE) strategies to correct ATP1A3 and Atp1a3 mutations in human cells and in two AHC mouse models. We used PE and BE to correct five prevalent ATP1A3 mutations with 43%–90% efficiency. AAV9-mediated in vivo PE corrects Atp1a3 D801N and E815K in the CNS of two AHC mouse models, yielding up to 48% DNA correction and 73% mRNA correction in bulk brain …
