Singlet fission (SF) and triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) are processes which may be exploited to boost the efficiency of solar energy technology. Despite being studied since the late 1960s, the mechanism of singlet fission is still not fully understood. This is partly because the main technique used to study singlet fission, optical or visible/near-IR transient absorption spectroscopy, cannot distinguish between the strongly coupled triplet-pair state1(TT), weakly interacting triplet pairs (T..T), and independent triplet states T1+ T1. To solve this problem, we combine transient optical spectroscopy performed as a function of magnetic field and transient electron …

It Takes Two To Engage: Ethical Ai Use In Research Skill Development For Security Studies Students, Ibrahim Kocaman, Daniel A. Cutrer

Publications

Various generative AI (GenAI) tools are increasingly utilized by students, creating a grey area where it is challenging to determine whether AI is used without violating academic integrity and whether it is assisting or impeding student engagement and success. To our knowledge, there is no definitive way to prove AI ghostwriting. AI is also increasingly utilized to enhance student engagement (Bauer et al., 2025; Chen et al., 2025). Recognizing that GenAI is here to stay, we are interested in finding the best way to leverage GenAI’s benefits while not jeopardizing educational integrity. Hence, the following question guided our efforts: How …

Mathematics Student Teachers' Curricular Reasoning During Planning, Erika Breann Miller Aug 2025

Mathematics Student Teachers' Curricular Reasoning During Planning, Erika Breann Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching is a complex practice, in part because of all the decisions teachers make daily. This is especially true for student teachers who have little to no prior teaching experience to inform them about the decisions that need to be made in the classroom and how to reason through all those decisions as they plan and enact the lessons. Secondary mathematics student teachers were introduced to the Instructional Pyramid (Dingman et al., 2021) which organizes and maps teacher’s mathematical reasoning onto four elements of a classroom—teacher, student, mathematics, and curriculum—to examine which curricular reasoning aspects they use while planning mathematics …

What If The Swans Wreaking Havoc In Supply Chains Are Grey Not Black?, Tony N.K. Lynch, Adrian E. Coronado Mondragon, Joo Y. Jung

Management Faculty Publications

Grey Swan is a relatively new construct that has not been adequately operationalised in supply chain management research. This work provides a supply chain management explanation and perspective on Grey Swans by distinguishing their characteristics relative to their more inconspicuous kindred, the Black Swans. Predictability and consequences are used to differentiate between the types of risk represented by black and grey swan events, as these are precursors to a set of descriptive and prescriptive (normative) views resulting from two pilot studies. Pilot studies were conducted to establish the validity and reliability of four types of supply chain disruptions comprising: labour …

Determining The Origin Of An Isolated Great Lakes Plant Species, Agoseris Glauca (Asteraceae), Seth Paul Hiers

Masters Theses

Small, isolated populations often have low genetic diversity and low potential for adaptation in response to environmental changes. Alternatively, isolated communities are often more likely to display local adaptations and over time speciate. The Great Lakes Region is home to over 50 vascular plant species that are disjunct from the species’ core populations. Agoseris glauca (Asteraceae) is a Great Lakes disjunct and Michigan state threatened species geographically isolated from its core range by 900 km. This study uses Genotyping by Sequencing to assess the population genetics of A. glauca for two Michigan disjunct populations and five western populations in the …

Counselors’ Competency Development In Suicidal Ideation Assessments Of Black American Adolescents, Salita Mcclelland Wynn Aug 2025

Counselors’ Competency Development In Suicidal Ideation Assessments Of Black American Adolescents, Salita Mcclelland Wynn

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black American adolescents have increased rates of suicidal ideation above what is noted in the general U.S. youth and adolescent population. An in-depth literature supports the notion that many counselors and mental health clinicians, post-graduation from their training programs, feel ill-equipped to assess suicidal ideation in Black American adolescents. The purpose of this qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences and competence of counselors who have clinical experience working with Black American adolescents who have suicidal ideation. Prior to the inception of this research, no other documented study addressed counselor competence with assessing suicidal ideation in Black …

The Lived Experiences Of Clinically Licensed Counselors During Covid-19, Deirdre F. Haynes Aug 2025

The Lived Experiences Of Clinically Licensed Counselors During Covid-19, Deirdre F. Haynes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an equal opportunity crisis. There is substantial research to better understand how individuals have reacted to crisis experiences like the COVID-19 pandemic. However, little is known about the lived experiences of clinically licensed counselors during COVID-19. This gap in the literature is important because the increase in the number of individuals seeking counseling to deal with their fears and concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic may have put a strain on counselors that were also experiencing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis was to bridge the …

Rational Tactical Nuclear First Use In Asymmetric Dyads And The States' Calculus Of Costs In An Era Of Interdependence : A Game-Theoretical Approach, Chi Cheong Chiu Aug 2025

Rational Tactical Nuclear First Use In Asymmetric Dyads And The States' Calculus Of Costs In An Era Of Interdependence : A Game-Theoretical Approach, Chi Cheong Chiu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Classical nuclear deterrence theory suggests that nuclear powers could be tempted to strike first in asymmetric dyads (dyads in which only one side is a nuclear power). However, in the Ukraine war, a nuclear-armed Russia has not deployed tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield, even at times when its military struggles on the ground with unfavorable balance. Why has Russia not used its nuclear weapons, especially after repeated threats of using them? What conditions make it rational for states to cross the nuclear threshold in asymmetric dyads? What discourages them from using nuclear weapons while possessing nuclear monopoly?

Expected utility …

Matter Of Segal V. New York State Div. Of Hous. & Community Renewal Aug 2025

Matter Of Segal V. New York State Div. Of Hous. & Community Renewal

All Decisions

In this Article 78 proceeding, a landlord sought unpaid rent/use and occupancy payments that accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic eviction moratorium. A prior holdover proceeding resulted in a final judgment of possession for the landlord, but no money judgment. The tenant was subsequently evicted after a lengthy stay due to the moratorium. The court rejected the tenant's claim that the landlord was barred by the doctrine of res judicata from seeking a money judgment for the use and occupancy that accrued after the final judgment. It found that the new claim was not sufficiently related to the original holdover proceeding, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Preliminary experimentation has suggested that a research-use-only real-time transcription-mediated amplification assay for Treponema pallidum (RUO T. pallidum TMA) yields instances of T. pallidum nucleic acid detection that coincide with non-treponemal serology in men who have sex with men (MSM) at increased risk for sexually transmitted infection. To further characterize the specificity of RUO T. pallidum TMA testing, 3,586 rectal swab specimens reported as “not detected” by the assay generated a mean endpoint FAM fluorescence of 637.5 units. Introduction of Treponema denticola, Treponema phagedenis, and Treponema refringens nucleic acid into matrices generated mean endpoint FAM fluorescence ranging from 620.7 …

Ribosome Deficiency Induces Salmonella Filamentation Within Host Cells, Zhihui Lyu, Cierra Wilson, Kalyn Weiss, Spencer Lewis, Kurt Fredrick, William Margolin, Jiqiang Ling Aug 2025

Ribosome Deficiency Induces Salmonella Filamentation Within Host Cells, Zhihui Lyu, Cierra Wilson, Kalyn Weiss, Spencer Lewis, Kurt Fredrick, William Margolin, Jiqiang Ling

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The ribosome is the central hub for protein synthesis and is heavily targeted by antibiotics. Ribosomal mutations, antibiotic treatment, and nutrient starvation can alter translational efficiency and lead to stressed cells. Ribosome deficiency plays a critical role in stress responses and disease progression; yet, how it affects bacteria-host interactions remains poorly understood. In this study, we show that a ribosome-deficient strain exhibits a surprising morphological change from rod shape to filamentous in Salmonella cells growing inside host macrophages. Such filamentation depends on an acidic condition within macrophages and in a defined medium mimicking macrophage conditions. Further genetic analyses revealed that …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is notoriously known for its high mortality and morbidity. Approximately one-third of the patients who survive aneurysm rupture are reported to develop delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), which contributes to a poor clinical outcome. Currently, there are no biomarkers for identifying which aSAH patients are at risk of developing DCI. We aimed to determine the feasibility of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) for predicting DCI post-aSAH.

Methods: aSAH patients were prospectively enrolled, and CSF samples were collected at two time points (< 24 h and 72 h post-aSAH) from individuals undergoing external ventricular drainage. Exosomal miRNAs were isolated from the CSF for analysis. In the initial group of patients (discovery cohort), an exploratory analysis was conducted using a CSF panel containing 84 miRNAs, assessed by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Based on this analysis, 27 miRNAs were selected for further evaluation in a second group of patients (validation cohort). Among these, 10 miRNAs had previously been reported in SAH-related CSF studies, supporting their relevance for continued investigation.

Results: In this study, RT-qPCR analysis of 84 miRNAs in CSF samples from …
