Parent To Child Intergenerational Transmission Of Direct And Indirect Weight And Shape Communication, Emily Ferrer, Shannon Marhan, Leora L. Haller, Shannon M. O’Connor

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Parental communication about body weight and shape is associated with offspring’s eating behaviors and body image. However, predictors of parental weight/shape communication are less known. The present study explored whether direct (i.e., comments to the child about their weight and encouragement to diet) and indirect (i.e., modeling of the importance of body weight/shape via parent’s own dieting and comments about their own weight) communication about weight, shape, and eating from parents in childhood predicted women’s direct and indirect communication about weight/shape to their own child in adulthood. Participants were 634 adult mothers who provided retrospective reports of their parents’ direct …

Student Perceptions About How Supplemental Instruction And Instructor Engagement Support Academic Achievement In A College-Level Statistics Course, Tasha Y. Rhodes Aug 2025

Student Perceptions About How Supplemental Instruction And Instructor Engagement Support Academic Achievement In A College-Level Statistics Course, Tasha Y. Rhodes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many college students enter postsecondary education underprepared for college-level mathematics, posing challenges for course completion and degree attainment. In response, a local community college system implemented a mainstreaming initiative that places underprepared students directly into college-level statistics courses with supplemental instruction (SI). This basic qualitative study explored students’ perceptions of the role of SI and instructor engagement in supporting their success in a college-level statistics course. The research was guided by Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 students enrolled at a comprehensive college who had completed the course. Through thematic analysis employing open coding yielded five distinct …

Post-Fire Succession In An Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Forest In The Santa Cruz Mountain Bioregion, Mojgan Mahdizadeh Aug 2025

Post-Fire Succession In An Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Forest In The Santa Cruz Mountain Bioregion, Mojgan Mahdizadeh

Master's Theses

Fire is a common disturbance in the western United States, and variation in its frequency and intensity can significantly impact species recovery and distribution across ecosystems. While fire frequency and intensity are increasing in coast redwood forests, little is known about how this forest type responds to high-intensity wildfires. In 2020, a high-intensity wildfire burned large portions of the coast redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains, including over 1,700 ha of old-growth. This event created a unique opportunity to evaluate post-fire succession. This research assessed vegetation recovery across high and low to moderate severity burned areas using random sampling …

Executive Functioning And Mental Health In Emerging Adults: Type 1 Diabetes Status As A Moderator, Hannah Margot Mcdaniel

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adults (ages 18-26) with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are especially vulnerable to diabetes management challenges when taking on increased disease responsibility during this critical period of development. They may experience higher cognitive and psychological demands compared to peers. The study examined whether having T1DM moderated the association between executive functioning (EF) and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress, and disordered eating) in emerging adults. Exploratory analyses investigated the associations between EF, disease management, and mental health symptoms. Participants were 35 emerging adults with T1DM and 35 healthy controls. Participants completed questionnaire measures of mental health and performance-based …

Real Earnings Management Among Industries: Does Market Competition Matter?, Michał Comporek Aug 2025

Real Earnings Management Among Industries: Does Market Competition Matter?, Michał Comporek

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This paper investigates real earnings management (REM) practices in public non-financial companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) from 2014 to 2023, focusing on sectoral differences and the influence of market competition. REM, defined as deviations from normal business operations aimed at manipulating reported earnings, can distort financial information and harm long-term firm value. This study contributes to the existing literature in two key ways. First, it examines variations in abnormal levels of production costs, sales, and discretionary expenditures – REM proxies based on Roychowdhury’s methodology – across sectors classified according to the WSE’s industry framework. This sectoral classification, …

Beyond Smoking: A Geospatial Investigation Of Factors Associated With Lung And Bronchus Cancer Risk In Pennsylvania, Tesla D. Dubois, Daniel Wiese, Kevin A. Henry, Shannon M. Lynch

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: While smoking is the leading cause of lung and bronchus cancer (LBC), additional exposures have been implicated and may explain the rise in LBC among never-smokers. To better understand the spatial distribution of LBC incidence and associated risk factors, this study aims to identify geographic areas with significantly elevated incidence rates in Pennsylvania and investigate the potential underlying risk factors.

METHODS: Using cancer registry data aggregated to the census tract level, spatial scan statistics were applied to detect areas of higher-than-expected LBC incidence across the state. Associations were then tested between census tract inclusion in a high-incidence area and …

Smaller community water systems were found to be more frequently impacted by contamination events. Use restrictions, except …

Male Mating Preference For Larger Females Does Not Vary Among Age Classes In The Long-Lived Beetle Bolitotherus Cornutus, G. M. Jiron, C. A. Greene, E. D. Brodie Iii, Vincent A. Formica Aug 2025

Male Mating Preference For Larger Females Does Not Vary Among Age Classes In The Long-Lived Beetle Bolitotherus Cornutus, G. M. Jiron, C. A. Greene, E. D. Brodie Iii, Vincent A. Formica

Biology Faculty Works

Theory and past experimental work suggest that as males age, the strength of their mate preference should decrease. However, the empirical work investigating this question has primarily been conducted in insects that have very short life spans and often live for just a single mating season. This leaves a gap in our understanding of the relationship between male mate preference and age across taxa, as age can conflate with other ecological changes in a single mating season. In this study, we ask how the strength of preference for large female body size changes as males age in a long-lived insect, …

Shared Augmented Reality (Shared AR) is an emerging technology that enables multiple users to interact synchronously within a collocated AR environment. Yet, there is limited research on the group interactions and dynamics in Shared AR, particularly in the context of gaming. To address this gap, we investigate Shared AR group interactions using a phone-based Shared AR mobile game called Urban Legends. Through in-situ observations, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews with 22 participants, we examine how users collaborate and communicate within the game. Our findings reveal that while verbal communication predominates, non-verbal cues are often overlooked by collocated participants, and …

Relational Observables, Quiddities, And Structural Realism, Emily Adlam Aug 2025

Relational Observables, Quiddities, And Structural Realism, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this article, I argue that modern spacetime physics causes problems for a number of traditional accounts of modality, but also offers important new ideas about the connection between modal and non-modal features of reality. I suggest that recent work on relational observables in general relativity and quantum gravity can help us understand how non-modal features of reality could arise from modal features of reality within some form of modal ontic structural realism. In particular, I argue that the notion of an ‘internal view,’ as employed in the partial/complete observables formalism and the quantum reference frame formalism, is an important …

Maya Migrants And Psychotherapy: Recommendations And A Case Study From Comunidad Sol In Canton, Ohio, Robin Chancer, Gerónimo Ramírez, Ernesto Ajanel Calel, María Ixcoy Mejía

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

This article approaches the question: How can non-Indigenous mental health practitioners work appropriately with Maya K’iche’ and Ixil communities in the United States? The authors are three Maya leaders and one non-Indigenous psychotherapist, the four of whom have worked together for several years. Psychological treatment rooted in Euro-American paradigms can be minimally helpful—if not harmful—to many Indigenous communities (Dudgeon & Bray, 2016). Traditional approaches such as cognitive-behavior therapy continue the colonial preoccupation with individual pathology and the separation of mind, body, spirit, and nature. The authors suggest that more appropriate approaches would include acknowledging structural oppression and centering the K’iche’ …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This basic qualitative research study explored the perceptions and lived experiences of pregnant and postpartum women in Arochukwu, Abia State, Nigeria, where access to quality prenatal and maternal healthcare is limited. Nigeria records the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to weak healthcare systems, poverty, and entrenched sociocultural norms. Grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM) and guided by the lens of social constructivism, the study explored how health beliefs, perceived risks, benefits, barriers, and cues to action shaped women’s healthcare decisions. Using semistructured, open-ended interviews with 13 purposefully selected women, the study captured how …

Staff Education To Reduce Compassion Fatigue Among Emergency Department Nurses, Ruth Anne Dirschuweit Aug 2025

Staff Education To Reduce Compassion Fatigue Among Emergency Department Nurses, Ruth Anne Dirschuweit

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

I created this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project as a staff education initiative to inform emergency department (ED) nurses about the emotional toll of caring for patients in distress. This condition, known as compassion fatigue (CF), is characterized by emotional exhaustion from ongoing exposure to trauma and can lead to increased stress, reduced job satisfaction, and a decline in care quality. A gap in staff support and coping strategies was identified among frontline nurses in a large, urban healthcare environment. I developed the project to increase nurses’ knowledge and self-awareness of CF through an evidence-based educational session. The guiding …

Evaluation Of Nibin-Generated Leads And Whether They Contribute To Solving Violent Crimes, Massi Martin Aug 2025

Evaluation Of Nibin-Generated Leads And Whether They Contribute To Solving Violent Crimes, Massi Martin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The client organization had not previously analyzed the impact of its NIBIN program. This lack of analysis potentially impeded informed decision-making regarding staffing and resource allocation. The purpose of this study was to address the practice-focused research question: What impact do NIBIN leads have on case closure rates for aggravated assaults and homicides involving firearms? A Cox proportional hazards regression model, a type of survival analysis, was used to analyze the data, which was based on the Locard exchange principle. Data were collected from the organization’s record management system. The findings were that NIBIN leads significantly contributed to faster case …
