Mainers Overwhelmingly Favor Release Of All Epstein Files, Oppose Maxwell Clemency 8/22/2025, Unh Survey Center Aug 2025

Mainers Overwhelmingly Favor Release Of All Epstein Files, Oppose Maxwell Clemency 8/22/2025, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Nearly all Maine residents want the Department of Justice to release all documents it has related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Majorities believe both the Trump and Biden administration have concealed evidence in the case and believe Trump and former President Bill Clinton were involved in crimes related to the case. Three-quarters oppose clemency for Epstein accomplice Ghisliane Maxwell. A majority of Mainers continue to disapprove of President Trump's job performance thus far.

Background

Greater deposits of epicardial adipose tissue are associated with atrial fibrillation and coronary disease, but have not been studied in subsistence populations.

Methods

We performed CT imaging to measure coronary artery and thoracic aortic calcium (CAC, TAC), epicardial fat thickness (EFT), liver density, and left atrial (LA) anteroposterior diameter and, using a deep learning-enabled software program, epicardial and thoracic fat volume (EFV, TFV), in two remote Amerindian subsistence populations with minimal coronary artery calcification and virtually no atrial fibrillation. We compared 893 adult Tsimane (mean age 58.3±10.5 y, 51.6% male), 440 Moseten (55.9±10.4 y, 53.6% male) to 955 U.S. …

Enteric/Typhoid Fever In A Returning Traveler: An Approach To A Thorough Medical Workup, Matthew Meyer, John Rogers, Rick Starlin Aug 2025

Enteric/Typhoid Fever In A Returning Traveler: An Approach To A Thorough Medical Workup, Matthew Meyer, John Rogers, Rick Starlin

Medical Student Research Showcase

Up to 70% of travelers to low-income regions experience health complications, most of which are self-limiting. However, 8% to 15% require medical evaluation either during travel or upon return, with fever frequently reported as a primary symptom.1 As such, the importance of a thorough medical workup in a returning traveler with fever cannot be overstated, as it may be the first sign of a potentially serious or infectious disease acquired abroad. High risk pathogens to be concerned for include Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Leptospiral, typhoid, and others, and thus it is incredibly important to narrow your differential, which will guide your …

How To Study 30-Day Readmissions: A Framework For Risk Stratification And Methodological Rigor, Mckenna Gervais, Kayley Anderson, Jana Wardian, Jayme Dowdall Aug 2025

How To Study 30-Day Readmissions: A Framework For Risk Stratification And Methodological Rigor, Mckenna Gervais, Kayley Anderson, Jana Wardian, Jayme Dowdall

Medical Student Research Showcase

Background: The 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) catalyzed a shift toward value-based care. This introduced reimbursement penalties tied to hospital performance metrics, such as the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) which deducts reimbursement for institutions with excessive 30-day readmission rates. Although more than 25% of hospital readmissions are considered potentially avoidable, the methods of evaluation are often inconsistent, and overlook medically complex patients and those who experience recurrent readmissions.

Objective: To identify methodologies used in current 30-day readmission studies and to propose improved methodological framework for population inclusion, demographic considerations, and statistical analysis to allow for proper risk stratification.

Methods: …

A 6-Month, Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial Of The Targeted Management (Team) Intervention Vs. Enhanced Treatment As Usual Among Ugandans At Risk For Stroke, Carla Conroy, Joy Yala, Christopher J. Burant, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic Aug 2025

A 6-Month, Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial Of The Targeted Management (Team) Intervention Vs. Enhanced Treatment As Usual Among Ugandans At Risk For Stroke, Carla Conroy, Joy Yala, Christopher J. Burant, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Background Among low and middle-income countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, the stroke burden is severe, with increasing trends in stroke incidence, prevalence, and mortality. Aims This 6-month, prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared a novel stroke risk reduction approach (TargetEd manAgeMent Intervention (TEAM)) vs. Enhanced Treatment as Usual (ETAU) in 247 Ugandans at risk for stroke. Methods Participants, enrolled across 3 Ugandan sites, were adults with high stroke risk. The primary outcome was a change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) from baseline to 6-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes included changes from baseline to 6 months on diastolic BP (DBP), serum lipids, …

Missing gene expression values are a common issue in RNAseq-based analyses of gene expression. However, an analysis of genetic and environmental factors contributing to data missingness in RNAseq-based assessment of gene expression has never been conducted. In this study we tried to identify factors in RNAseq data missingness. We used RNAseq data from 66 lung adenocarcinoma tumors and corresponding adjacent normal lung tissues. We found a strong negative association between the gene expression level and missingness, supporting the idea that the borderline expression level is a key contributor to missingness. In a more detailed analysis, the relationship between gene expression …

Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) almost invariably relapse in the long term, due to the emergence of subpopulations of resistant cells. Through a DNA barcoding approach, we show that the clinically approved drug sorafenib specifically abolishes the selective advantage of EGFR-TKI-resistant cells, while preserving the response of EGFR-TKI-sensitive cells. Sorafenib is active against multiple mechanisms of resistance/tolerance to EGFR-TKIs and its effects depend on early inhibition of MAPK-interacting kinase (MKNK) activity and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) phosphorylation, and later down-regulation of MCL1 and …
