The Nucleocapsid protein (N) of SARS-CoV-2 plays a critical role in the viral lifecycle by regulating RNA replication and by packaging the viral genome. N and RNA phase separate to form condensates that may be important for these functions. Both functions occur at membrane surfaces, but how N toggles between these two membrane-associated functional states is unclear. Here, we reveal that phosphorylation switches how N condensates interact with membranes, in part by modulating condensate material properties. Our studies also show that phosphorylation alters N's interaction with viral membrane proteins. We gain mechanistic insight through structural analysis and molecular simulations, which …

Membrane scaffold protein-based nanodiscs have facilitated unprecedented structural and biophysical analysis of membrane proteins in a near-native lipid environment. However, successful reconstitution of membrane proteins in nanodiscs requires prior solubilization and purification in detergents, which may impact their physiological structure and function. Furthermore, the detergent-mediated reconstitution of nanodiscs is unlikely to recapitulate the precise composition or asymmetry of native membranes. Heart failure is a leading cause of death worldwide, and even with current treatments, the 5-y transplant-free survival rate is only ~50 to 70%. As such, there is a need to develop new treatments for patients that improve survival and quality of life. This study investigates the effects of ambient temperature on NOx (NO + NO2) emissions from model year 2011 and later heavy-duty (HD) diesel vehicles. Emission measurements were collected in Perry, Utah, using the Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test (FEAT) remote sensing device. Data were limited to model year 2011 and later to focus on vehicles likely equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, which control tailpipe NOx emissions and are shown to be temperature sensitive. HD diesel vehicles measured in the winter of 2020 had consistently higher NOx emissions than those measured in the summer of 2023, most significantly for vehicles …

A majority of Indians do not have effective access to legal services, despite the constitutional promise of access to justice. There are two intertwined reasons for this: the unavailability of a sufficient number of good quality lawyers, and the high costs of accessing legal services. The Indian legal profession is highly unequal, with ‘prestige’ being the currency of upward professional mobility. A creative prose artefact and critical exegesis illustrate how roleplaying games explore community and identity. A prose dramatisation of a cooperative TTRPG (table top roleplaying game) juxtaposes the collaboratively imagined world, and the reality from which it is an escape. Themes of gender identity, isolation, precarious work and fluctuating health are explored within the timeframe of the Covid outbreak in Adelaide mid-2020, with the roleplaying session serving as a respite from insecure work and health challenges, while supporting creative agency and the expression of meaningful selfhood through collaborative play and problem-solving. In a recent meta-analysis, Vo et al.¹ reported that most nursing students experienced moderate stress (42.1%) and mild to moderate anxiety (19.4%-25.1%). Both physiologic and psychological calming can be enhanced through controlled breathing techniques. Breathing techniques have emerged as potential tools for stress management and well-being. Controlled breathing influences respiratory rate by increasing vagal tone during slowed expiration.² This reduction in respiratory rate can enhance mood and reduce negative emotions such as state anxiety.²

A healthy work environment improves patient outcomes and promotes resiliency by supporting the wellbeing of the nurses. The purpose of our study was to describe labor and delivery nurses’ experiences in caring for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used a descriptive phenomenological design and purposeful sampling to recruit experienced labor and delivery nurses for flexible semi-structured face-to-face audiotaped interviews. Constant comparison was used to analyze data. Ten nurses employed in a labor and delivery unit in two acute care hospitals in southern Texas participated and were interviewed from June through August 2022.
