Effects Of Fasd On An Individual’S Life Trajectory, Peyton M. Enders
Effects Of Fasd On An Individual’S Life Trajectory, Peyton M. Enders
Master of Arts in Human Services
The consumption of alcohol has been in society for thousands of years. However, the discovery of the impacts of alcohol consumption while pregnant is something that is continuously being learned about. Controversy on the effects of alcohol while pregnant and the level of consumption throughout the last century alone has caused individuals to misunderstand the level of danger that it has on a child. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a multi-layer disorder that causes not only physical deformities but also a change in mental health and cognitive levels of an individual. Throughout any stage of pregnancy a consumption of alcohol …
To Protect And Survive: Acknowledging Adverse Childhood Experiences In Law Enforcement, Melanie Appleman
To Protect And Survive: Acknowledging Adverse Childhood Experiences In Law Enforcement, Melanie Appleman
Master of Arts in Human Services
This literature review explores the influence Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have on choosing a helping profession as well as their effect on law enforcement personnel and their ability to cope with occupational trauma. Law enforcement officers are routinely exposed to high-stress, high-risk environments which can exacerbate underlying trauma stemming from early life experiences. Officers with a history of ACEs may be more vulnerable to emotional dysregulation, hyper-vigilance, burnout, and substance abuse which can influence their decision making, relationships, and professional conduct potentially resulting in negative outcomes. Key themes include the identification of risk factors, the development of screening tools, …

Staff Education On Using The Epworth Sleepiness Scale In Primary Care, Amanda Robyn Jones
Staff Education On Using The Epworth Sleepiness Scale In Primary Care, Amanda Robyn Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sleep disorders are prevalent in primary care settings and often remain underdiagnosed due to inconsistent assessment practices. This doctoral project was conducted to develop, implement, and evaluate whether an educational intervention for registered nurses would enhance their knowledge on using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) for sleep assessment in primary care. Guided by adult learning theories and the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation instructional design model, the aim of the project was to address the practice gap related to inadequate sleep evaluations, ultimately improving patient outcomes and promoting holistic care. Evidence was collected through pre and post intervention assessments, …

Assessing Cascaded Op-Amp And Pre-Current Amplifier Configurations In Transimpedance Amplifier Interfacing Circuits For Nano-Scale Current-Based Sensor Applications, Mohamed Mamdouh, Sameh O. Abdellatif
Assessing Cascaded Op-Amp And Pre-Current Amplifier Configurations In Transimpedance Amplifier Interfacing Circuits For Nano-Scale Current-Based Sensor Applications, Mohamed Mamdouh, Sameh O. Abdellatif
Electrical Engineering
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of two proposed configurations for current-to-voltage converters tailored for nano-scale current-based sensor applications, focusing on key performance metrics such as linearity, dynamic range, DC noise immunity, and power losses. The evaluation employed frequency-dependent analyses, including transient response, step response, input impedance, and frequency-dependent noise spectra, to compare a cascaded double output configuration with a pre-current amplifier design. The results indicate a trade-off between dynamic range and linearity, with the pre-current amplifier demonstrating a higher dynamic range but lower linearity compared to the cascaded configuration. Additionally, the current amplifier configuration exhibited advantages in power consumption …

From The River To The Sea: Environmental Ecocide In Palestine, Isabela Pizarro
From The River To The Sea: Environmental Ecocide In Palestine, Isabela Pizarro
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper investigates the environmental and ecological toll of Israel’s current occupation and genocide of Palestine through ecological, historical, philosophical, and legal lenses. Chapter 1 explores the ecological impacts that Israel’s prolonged military operations have had on Gaza and the West Bank since October 7, 2023. Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive examination of the ideological motivations and historical context for Israel’s colonization of Palestine. The chapter also provides a pre-colonial history of Palestine’s indigenous agriculture and land management practices, highlighting its self-sufficiency and sustainability prior to the occupation. Chapter 3 explores different environmental philosophies between indigenous Palestinians and the State …
Tenzing Rigdol’S Biography Of A Thought: A Mandala In The Heart Of The Met, Sarah Magnatta
Tenzing Rigdol’S Biography Of A Thought: A Mandala In The Heart Of The Met, Sarah Magnatta
Art and Art History: Faculty Scholarship
In 2024, artist Tenzing Rigdol created an installation - titled Biography of a Thought - spanning the entirety of the atrium in the Robert Lehman wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His larger-than-life mandala included twenty painted panels on four walls, a central podium with a panel on top, and carpets on the floor mirroring parts of the painted shapes on the walls. Complete with bright sunlight streaming from the above skylight, the room transformed into a modern mandala - a walkable, meditative, transformative space. Even with its multiple traditional Tibetan Buddhist components and organisational structure, many of the …
Investigating Resilience Of Cyberattack Detection Using Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control To Data Poisoning, Helen Durand, Akkarakaran Francis Leonard
Investigating Resilience Of Cyberattack Detection Using Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control To Data Poisoning, Helen Durand, Akkarakaran Francis Leonard
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Cyberattacks may be performed on process control systems due to their integration of networking and computing with physical systems. Prior work in our group has developed detection strategies for nonlinear systems under sensor, actuator, and combined sensor and actuator attacks which can ensure, under characterizable conditions, that attacks can be detected before they cause safety issues. However, this work did not take into account the potential that an attacker could attempt to provide data to a process that causes an attack to remain undetected but that also is consistent with different process dynamics than those which the process has. This …

Response Of Dynamic Processes With Control Implemented On A Noisy Quantum Computer, Shilpa Narashimhan, Dominic Messina, Henrique Oyama, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
A major challenge to determining the applicability (and potential outperformance over classical computers) of a quantum computer (QC) within chemical manufacturing processes is quantum noise. Computations by a QC are error-prone due to the influence of quantum noise inherent to the hardware. Errors in control inputs may destabilize a chemical process and lead to unsafe conditions for manufacturing personnel and the environment. The response of a process with control implemented on a QC to errors due to noise must be investigated thoroughly. In this work, the impacts of control input errors due to quantum noise on a process are modeled …
Heuristic Strategies For Process Stabilization Using Proportional Control Implemented By A Noisy Quantum Simulator, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen Durand
Heuristic Strategies For Process Stabilization Using Proportional Control Implemented By A Noisy Quantum Simulator, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Processing and storage demands of industrial processes are causing fields such as optimization, scheduling, and control to assess the effectiveness of quantum devices in their applications. A key objective of control systems is to ensure process safety. This paper focuses on the potential of quantum devices to compute control inputs that maintain system safety despite sources of nondeterminism inherent to currently available quantum devices (quantum noise). In our previous work, we employed a quantum simulator to assess whether a quantum implementation of a proportional (P) control law could stabilize a single-input/single-output system under quantum noise approximated from a real quantum …
Tools To Design Algorithms For Implementing Control Over Quantum Computers, Shilpa Narashimhan, Jihan Abou Halloun, Kip Nieman, Helen Durand
Tools To Design Algorithms For Implementing Control Over Quantum Computers, Shilpa Narashimhan, Jihan Abou Halloun, Kip Nieman, Helen Durand
Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications
Quantum computers (QCs) may find future applications within control systems that operate manufacturing processes. For application within control engineering, quantum algorithm development must be led by control engineers. However, control engineers may face challenges in designing quantum algorithms for control engineering problems. In this work, we provide several path-finding studies that leverage engineering tools such as optimization, encryption, and computational "short-cuts" toward making algorithm design for QC easier for control engineers.
Real-Time Dynamic Hazard Maps For Shallow Colluvial Landslides In Eastern Kentucky, Lindsey Sebastian Bryson, Nathaniel O'Leary
Real-Time Dynamic Hazard Maps For Shallow Colluvial Landslides In Eastern Kentucky, Lindsey Sebastian Bryson, Nathaniel O'Leary
Civil Engineering Research Data
Landslide hazards pose a persistent threat to communities and infrastructure in Eastern Kentucky, where steep slopes, shallow colluvial soils, and variable hydrological conditions drive frequent slope failures. This work advances landslide hazard mapping (LHM) through the development of dynamic, spatiotemporal models for shallow colluvial landslides. Two studies refine the use of a limit equilibrium framework to enhance predictive capability. The first study establishes a novel LHM workflow that integrates Hydrus-1D simulations of soil moisture dynamics, driven by precipitation and evapotranspiration data, into slope stability analysis. Factor of Safety (FS) parameters are applied to statistics-based landslide susceptibility maps (LSM), producing accurate, …
