This dissertation explores the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), racism, health habits, and therapy engagement on cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Black adults. This study builds on the Biopsychosocial Model and Allostatic Load Theory to examine how trauma, racism, and health habits influence cardiovascular health outcomes in the African American population. Through a quantitative analysis, this study investigates whether ACEs, experiences of racism, engagement in health habits, and participation in therapy contribute to the development or mitigation of CVD in Black adults. This thesis examines collaboration gaps between international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) and grassroots international nongovernmental organizations (GINGOs) in the localization agenda. While humanitarian and development work are often viewed separately, many organizations operate across both areas, shifting between emergency response and long-term engagement. For this research, “localization” refers to efforts aimed at addressing power imbalances and improving collaboration with local actors, especially in small island nations where vulnerabilities and capacities intersect. Emerging research evokes selection for various plant secondary compounds as a potential driver of ruminant diet selection, through animals’ evident ability to rectify deficiencies and even self-medicate. This idea was assessed by comparing physiological responses to vaccination challenges of animals fed diets of differing phytochemical composition. In the first of three separate trials, goats were placed in individual pens and fed one of three treatments in a completely randomized design. Specifically, the scholarship on this growing demographic limited their experiences to cultural identity, as it pertains to belonging. Simply put, the literature supposes that children of immigrants’ cultural identities define their sense of belonging. This phenomenological qualitative study explored college students' recalled experiences with high school special education secondary transition programming and its impact on their college success and perceived readiness. Guided by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), focusing on the competence need, the research examined students' perceptions of instruction quality and quantity, and their preparedness in disability awareness and knowledge of strengths and limits.

Crowdfunding has emerged as a popular platform for collective funding of social, charitable, and commercial projects. However, its increasing use has raised concerns over potential misuse, including as a source of terrorism financing. This study investigates the relationship between donation intentions using crowdfunding and the risk of crowdfunding being used as a source of terrorism financing. Furthermore, it explores the mediating role of government intervention in this relationship. Using a Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) second-order approach, the research evaluates the interaction between donor intentions, crowdfunding risks, and government regulations. Dengue virus infection is increasingly recognized in South Texas, particularly in areas bordering Mexico. Although many cases are mild and self-limiting, dengue can present with atypical features, including hematological abnormalities and bleeding, even in the absence of plasma leakage. A 22-year-old Hispanic woman presented to a hospital in South Texas with hematemesis, fever, and gastrointestinal symptoms following travel to northeastern Mexico (Monterrey, Nuevo Leon). Initial laboratory workup revealed severe leukopenia and neutropenia, mild thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes, but no evidence of plasma leakage. This dissertation presents advancements in compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) through methodological innovation and paleoclimate reconstruction in Central and East Asia. Utilizing plant wax n-alkanes from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sediment cores, this research reconstructs atmospheric circulation shifts responding to tectonic evolution and climate transitions since the Late Miocene.

Limited data exist on how seasonal variations and redox processes influence CH₄ fluxes in these dynamic ecosystems. This study addressed two questions: (1) How are CH₄ fluxes in riverine floodplains and adjacent hillslopes impacted by seasonal variations? As tariff policy once again shapes U.S. trade strategy, this article makes a foundational claim: trade wars are, at their core, tax wars. Against the backdrop of escalating economic tensions with the United States’ trade partners, this article argues that tariffs cannot be understood apart from the fiscal architecture that sustains them. What appears to be protectionism often masks deeper structural asymmetries in the U.S. tax system.

Neuraxial anesthesia has significantly reduced anesthesia-related maternal morbidity during the peri-partum period. Despite these advancements, racial disparities persist in obstetric anesthesia care and Black women continue to experience disproportionately higher rates of general anesthesia (GA) for cesarean delivery when compared to non-Hispanic White patients. This quality improvement (QI) project sought to decrease the conversion from epidural anesthesia to GA for cesarean sections in laboring women by creating an epidural catheter assessment tool. The epidural catheter assessment tool provided uniform assessment and documentation of labor epidurals by anesthesia providers to reduce the use of general anesthesia for unplanned cesarean section deliveries. …

Problem: An outpatient epilepsy clinic receives reimbursement for services rendered based on three relative value units (RVUs). Nurse practitioners (NPs) in the clinic are not meeting their expected RVUs based on current productivity limitations.

Context: The clinic assessment revealed workflow gaps limiting NPs’ ability to increase productivity. The clinic is high-performing, and the staff worked collaboratively to improve the work RVUs. However, dissatisfaction can occur in other microsystems if collaboration breaks down.

Intervention: A microsystem assessment, NP interviews, and clinic template revisions were discussed with leadership and implemented.
