We introduce a new convolutional autoencoder architecture for user modeling and recommendation tasks with several improvements over the state of the art. First, our model has the flexibility to learn a set of associations and combinations between different interaction types in a way that carries over to each user and item. Second, our model is able to learn jointly from both the explicit ratings and the implicit information in the sampling pattern (which we refer to as ”implicit feedback”). One prevalent approach to testing control systems is falsification, which aims to find an input signal that causes the control system to violate a formal safety specification using optimization algorithms. This paper argues that the emergence of new frontiers of smart transformation, such as underground spaces, can pose significant challenges to the implementation of “smart” technological solutions. Exploring the case of Singapore’s Digital Underground initiative, we show that elements such as material complexity, co-ordination between stakeholders, and the availability of appropriate regulatory and administrative frameworks can problematize the implementation of subterranean smart initiatives. By considering multistake-holder perspectives on these “more-than-technological” factors, this paper offers lessons for urban planners, policymakers, and developers in cities around the world that are keen to leverage technology to unlock the potential of underground space.

Hermann Hospital, as it was originally known, has been a cornerstone of Houston’s medical community for more than a century. Over the years, the institution experienced major expansions, several name changes, and even a few scandals, all while shaping the growth of the Texas Medical Center. The photographs featured in this exhibit, taken between 1947 and 1976, highlight both the hospital’s transformation and the evolving Houston skyline. They also capture milestones such as the launch of Life Flight, which forever changed emergency medical care.

This merit and demerit, accumulated by individuals throughout their lives, gives each person a kind of ethical “score” that can determine what they deserve, and influence whether good or bad things happen to them (e.g., divine punishments and rewards, a favourable or unfavourable rebirth, etc.). The Decline And Transformation Of Smallholders In Chinese Agriculture: National Trends, Qian Forrest Zhang, Meiling Wu

Using data from official statistical sources and a nationally representative survey, we find that since 2001, China’s agricultural labor force has declined by over 50 percent—a loss of over 200 million smallholders, probably the largest in human history. This trend is the most pronounced in livestock sectors: from 2012 to 2021, 62.5 million smallholder units have disappeared. The 150 million remaining smallholders are mostly commodity producers, participating widely in commodity relations to access agrochemicals, machinery, rental land, and wage labor to produce for markets. The ageing smallholder population also face challenges in intergenerational reproduction, which will accelerate its decline.

Existing literature has explored the impact of social support (SS) on life satisfaction (LS). However, the reciprocal relationship—that is, the influence of LS on SS—remains understudied, despite extant theoretical support. In addressing this gap, the present study employed bivariate latent growth modeling to examine bidirectional associations between SS and LS trajectories among 8,449 middle-aged and older adults in Singapore, over seven waves spanning almost 6 years. Results provided evidence supporting the notion of bidirectional associations. Specifically, baseline SS positively predicted subsequent changes in LS, and baseline LS positively predicted subsequent changes in SS. Findings underscore the potential for interventions and …

Meaning-making systems underlie perceptions of the efficacy of threat-mitigating behaviors. Religion and science both offer threat mitigation, yet these meaning-making systems are often considered incompatible. Do such epistemological conflicts swamp the desire to employ diverse precautions against threats? Or do individuals—particularly individuals who are highly reactive to threats—hedge their bets by using multiple threat-mitigating practices despite their potential epistemological incompatibility? Complicating this question, perceptions of conflict between religion and science likely vary across cultures; likewise, pragmatic features of precautions prescribed by some religions make them incompatible with some scientifically-based precautions. The widespread use of smartphones has raised concerns about problematic usage behaviors, including excessive screentime and frequent phone checking, which can disrupt daily functioning. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted nudge-based intervention in reducing smartphone use through subtle changes to smartphone settings. The intervention incorporated adjustments such as disabling face/touch ID, setting longer passwords, switching to grayscale mode, and removing social media apps from the home screen. In ‘Reimagining Academic Assessment in the Age of AI’, Matthew Hammerton examines the challenges and opportunities posed by generative AI for higher education assessment. He critiques common responses like banning AI, reverting to in-class exams, or abandoning essays altogether, arguing that they fail to preserve the deeper pedagogical goals of higher order, independent thinking. Instead, Hammerton proposes a guiding principle of intellectual responsibility: students should be accountable for explaining and defending each major choice in their work—regardless of whether they use AI tools. Perioperative identification of ischemic-hypoxic tissue is essential for reducing the risk of mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN), a major complication following mastectomy. Implant-based breast reconstruction is jeopardized in the presence of MSFN. However, existing technologies are limited by depth insensitivity, dye-related risks, the need for contact sensors, and an inability to simultaneously assess both blood flow and oxygenation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions in patients with pre-existing diuretic-resistant ascites. There is logical hesitation among clinicians to pursue MWA in these decompensated patients for fear of worsening an already bleak prognosis, but there is limited evidence to justify this behavior. Material and Methods: A retrospective review of HCC treated with percutaneous MWA at a single center was performed. 18 patients who underwent CT-guided MWA with pre-existing diuretic-resistant ascites were identified. Severe obesity (SevO) is a primary driver of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) and several cancers, with a disproportionate impact on marginalized populations. SevO is an understudied global health disease, limiting knowledge about its mechanisms and impacts. Objective: Analyze the impact of COVID-19 on outpatient mental health (OP-MH) utilization patterns, particularly telehealth, across eight different MH conditions with a 2-year follow-up.

Methods: This population-based cohort study uses a 5% random sample of Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥18 and newly diagnosed with one of the eight MH disorders: psychotic, depressive, bipolar, anxiety, trauma-related, substance-use, other MH disorders, and two or more MH disorders. Monthly OP-MH utilization patterns were compared among patients in 2020-2021 newly diagnosed in 2019 to comparable prepandemic cohorts newly diagnosed in 2017. We aim to describe the baseline, clinical, treatment characteristics, and six-month outcomes of patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in Kenya.

Methods: a retrospective observational cohort study design was employed. Data were obtained from three Kenyan referral hospitals, including public and private institutions. Baseline and six-month data were collected. Depending on the type of variable, data were summarized descriptively.

Prior studies of halobenzene–ammonia complexes have shown that the nature of the cationic intermediate (i.e., Wheland-type vs ion-radical) may play a key role in determining the reaction products. To probe this link, we report here the reaction dynamics of the chlorobenzene-ammonia 1:1 complex (PhCl···NH₃) using product ion imaging following two-color resonant two-photon ionization. A threshold value of 8.863 ± 0.008 eV was determined for the appearance of protonated aniline, which accompanies Cl atom loss and is the dominant product channel at energies near threshold. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are critical regulators of protein function, and their disruption is a key mechanism by which missense variants contribute to disease. Accurate PTM site prediction using deep learning can help identify PTM-altering variants, but progress has been limited by the lack of large, high-quality training datasets. Here, we introduce PTMAtlas, a curated compendium of 397,524 PTM sites generated through systematic reprocessing of 241 public mass-spectrometry datasets, and DeepMVP, a deep learning framework trained on PTMAtlas to predict PTM sites for phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, sumoylation, ubiquitination and N-glycosylation. Face Recognition Systems (FRS) are increasingly targeted by morphing attacks, where facial features of multiple individuals are blended into a synthetic image to deceive biometric verification. This paper proposes an enhanced Siamese Neural Network (SNN)-based system for robust morph detection. The methodology involves four stages. First, a dataset of real and morphed images is generated using StyleGAN, producing high-quality facial images. Background: Hip fractures are common in older people and are associated with high perioperative mortality. Prompt surgical intervention within the first 48 h of fraction reduces complications; however, surgical urgency often precludes a comprehensive preoperative cardiac evaluation. Preliminary data suggests that performing a focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) before surgery may reduce postoperative complications. We therefore propose to test the primary hypothesis that FCU reduces a 30-day composite of mortality and serious complications.
