This Animal Research and Education Ethics Screening Checklist provides a guideline in determining the ethical review required for studies/lessons involving animal subjects. As per the Animal Research and Education Ethics Policy all activities that involve animals as subjects considered sentient beings are required to undergo a formal ethical review prior to commencement of the study/lesson.

The University’s Animal Research and Education Ethics Committee (AREEC) facilitates the statutory required formal ethical review of all research and educational activities that involve animals as subjects considered sentient beings prior to commencement of the study. Researchers and educators are also required to liaise with the Animal Welfare Body (AWB) in respect of animal interactions. The AWB manages the wider context of animal welfare in accordance with Animal Welfare legislation.

Zinc oxide Nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) have a promising potential in antibacterial and anticancer treatments because of their ease of production, low toxicity, and versatility in application. This review encompasses recently developed synthesis, characterizing and biomedical applications of ZnO-NPs. Green synthesis methodologies, sol-gel, and precipitation influence the biological effectiveness of ZnO-NPs, these methods particularly affect key characteristics such as particle size, shape and surface charge. These properties play crucial roles in antibacterial effectiveness, which facilitates their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and bacterial cell membrane disruption, leading to bacterial cell death. Perovskite solar cells have rapidly advanced due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, but achieving uniform crystallization and stability remains challenging. This review examines solvent-assisted annealing, including solvent-vapor and anti-solvent treatments as a strategy to modulate perovskite crystallization for enhanced device performance. Solvent vapors (e.g. DMF, DMSO, alcohol mixtures) introduced during thermal annealing sustain a supersaturated environment that extends nucleation and enables Ostwald ripening, yielding markedly larger grain sizes and improved crystallinity. Studies show that solvent annealing can increase MAPbI3 carrier diffusion lengths beyond 1 μm and maintain >14.5% efficiency even for films up to 1 μm thick. Advanced schemes, such …

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), represents a growing public health concern with diverse symptom profiles, unclear risk factors, and evolving evidence on potential prevention strategies. Most studies of Long COVID have relied on electronic health records or convenience samples, which may underestimate mild or community-based cases and lack standardized follow-up, and often do not include pre-infection health information or complete infection histories. Salamanders have some of the largest genomes among animals, driven primarily by expansion of repeat elements and slow rates of DNA loss. However, species in the lungless genus Desmognathus (Plethodontidae) have some of the smallest genomes at ∼13 to 15 GB, though previous sequencing attempts with short-read assemblies were still fragmentary. Here, we assemble an annotated draft genome of Desmognathus fuscus using PacBio HiFi reads and transcriptomic data from 2 specimens from the same population. The combined dataset resulted in a 16.1 GB assembly in 19,632 contigs and an L/N50 of 2,459/1.74 MB, with the longest contig at 27.9 MB. …

A multigenerational caregiving crisis is emerging at the interface of family and work, and human resource development (HRD) should pay attention. This perspective considers the impact of multigenerational caregiving-induced responsibilities on human capital frameworks, and their implications for HRD. We believe traditional models often neglect the unique challenges multigenerational caregivers face—such as stress, absenteeism, and constrained opportunities for self-development—which contribute to the erosion of human capital. This paper uses quantitative models to show that multigenerational caregiving is a critical driver of human capital depreciation. Integrating multigenerational caregivers into human capital discourse foregrounds the need for adaptive HRD strategies. These strategies …

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published the Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (6th Edition) (MMUCC) in 2024. This updated version of the MMUCC contains recommendations for improving and standardizing electronic crash data. Its guidelines address the collection and presentation of 105 data elements and 1,056 data attributes. To facilitate a possible redesign of Kentucky’s crash reporting process, Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) researchers reviewed the updated criteria and evaluated the degree to which the state complies with its recommended methods of gathering, storing, and presenting crash data. The opioid epidemic remains an entrenched issue in communities due to its multiple and interrelated risk factors. As part of the HEALing Communities Study, we recruited people with lived experience of substance use disorder and practitioners in the field to participate in multi-session Photovoice projects to contextualize the opioid use landscape in their respective communities. Photovoice combines photography and group discussion to explore concerns and strengths in a community. Researchers facilitated 21 Photovoice projects (N = 127 participants) across 19 communities in the Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Ohio HCS sites. Although numerous studies have examined the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in different socio-cultural contexts, the moderating role of specific macro contextual characteristics remains understudied. This cross-national study examined the effects of three parenting styles on two aspects of academic achievement (self-reported average grade and educational attainment) in a sample of adolescents and young adults from ten Southeast European countries (N = 10,909) and tested whether the associations were moderated by economic development as an indicator of socio-cultural context. This article traces the development of the law of deposits in Singapore and reviews the restatement of the law in the 2024 landmark decision of the Court of Appeal in Li Jialin v Wingcrown Investments Pte Ltd, as well as some of the issues left open by the decision. Private settlements have been consistently encouraged by the Singapore civil justice system. Depending on the context, the settlement may take on many forms, including consent orders and settlement agreements. This begs the question of whether the exact form of settlement matters, or whether a settlement “by any other name” suffices. This article proposes the concept of “sustainable settlements” – comprising the measures of ease of enforcement, finality, and confidentiality – to holistically appraise the effectiveness of settlement mechanisms. Evidence indicates that the ASEAN region has prioritised the improvement of such a regime, especially after the financial instability following the COVID-19 pandemic. This article is a case commentary on the recent Singapore Court of Appeal decision of Kuvera Resources Pte Ltd v JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. [2023] 2 SLR 389. It begins with a brief review of the structure of documentary credit transactions before setting out the judgments by the High Court and Court of Appeal. The commentary then examines how both courts rationalised letters of credit within the traditional framework of unilateral contracts, before scrutinising the current position of sanctions clauses within letters of credit. The real-time control of concrete's stiffening allows users to better control pumping and extrusion during 3D-printing processes. Here, a portlandite-based cementitious formulation (i.e., slurry or suspension) that features the potential for rapid CO₂ uptake is adapted for 3D-printing applications. In particular, we showcase a portlandite-fly ash binder system combined with a thermo responsive polymer, wherein precise control via thermal activation allows set control and rapid solidification. Through the thermally induced polymerization of polyacrylamide, the hybrid binder system rapidly undergoes stiffening at trigger onset temperatures ranging from 60 °C to 80 °C, exhibiting average stiffening rates of up to 2600 …

Farm dams are important water security features supporting both agricultural production and the natural environment. In Australia alone, over two million farm dams provide the water resources underpinning rural and regional primary industries with an annual export value of $80 billion. However, monitoring these water bodies to understand water security and vulnerability is challenging, primarily because of their large quantity, size and highly variable spectral signatures. These characteristics result in difficulty determining thresholds for index-based water detection methods and add to the difficulty of creating adequate training datasets for deep learning methods.
