Part of the very identity of the American university is its insulation from society—a crucial contributor, at least in some instances, toward facilitating the search for knowledge and the disruption of established orthodoxies. Yet American higher education does not exist and cannot function separately from societal pressures. This is most obviously true in the context of public institutions that directly rely on state governmental entities for financial support and that may be subject to some mechanisms of control by governmental actors or their appointees. ABSTRACT Objectives: To measure the pressure exerted on the base of the tongue during endotracheal intubation using a standard pediatric model. Methods: The study was conducted in October–November 2022 at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Ankara, Turkey. Anesthesiology residents performed intubations with Glidescope ® -LoPro-T2, Storz ® -C-MAC-paediatric-D-blade, and standard-Macintosh-1-blade on the same pediatric intubation model. The force exerted on the base of the tongue was measured during intubation using a force sensor. Fetal Myocardial Performance Index In The Late Third Trimester For The Prediction Of Intrapartum Cardiotocographic Abnormalities, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Ingrid Gichere

Objective

We sought to determine whether fetal myocardial performance index (MPI) performed in the late third trimester could predict abnormal intrapartum cardiotocographic (CTG) patterns.

Methods

A prospective observational study including women presenting for fetal growth ultrasound from 32 weeks. Three consecutive measurements of the left ventricular MPI were obtained and averaged. The patients’ intrapartum CTG events were later observed.

Results

A total of 299 women were analyzed. The fetal MPI across the population were 0.41, 0.50 and 0.63, representing 10th, 50th and 90th centiles, respectively. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) did not show a significant difference in MPI values …

Introduction: We aimed to evaluate long-term outcomes following tracheostomy in older trauma patients and hypothesized that 1-year survival decreases with older age.

Methods: This was a descriptive analysis of intensive care unit patients ≥65 y old who underwent tracheostomy from 2015 to 2020. The National Death Index was accessed to determine time from tracheostomy creation to death. Groups were categorized by age. The primary outcome was 1-year mortality. Survival by age strata was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Results: Of 205 eligible patients, 125 (61%) were 65-74, 68 (33%) were 75-84, and 12 (6%) were >85 y old. Median injury …

Vermicomposting is an effective and eco-friendly method of converting biodegradable materials into fertilizers that promote plant growth and development. This study aimed to assess the efficiency and quality of vermicompost and vermiworms produced using combinations of biodegradable farm materials in agroforestry systems. The materials used for the 6 treatments included combinations of the following materials: fresh leaves of leguminous plants (Gliricidia sepium, Flemingia macrophylla, and Senna spectabilis), fresh cattle manure, and other plant materials (rice straw and banana trunk). This study compared gonad development between wild-sourced and hatchery-bred silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus. Wild fish from the east bay area of Laguna de Bay, Philippines, and hatchery-bred stocks grown to adult size in outdoor tanks were sampled, and somatic condition, gonad histology, gonadosomatic index (GSI), gut index (GI), and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were assessed during the annual reproductive cycle. Hatcherybred fish condition was generally better than that of wild-sourced fish as a consequence of readily available food resources and environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the semen quality of 2 indigenous Vietnamese chicken breeds, Dong Tao and Ho, and to assess their reproductive potential for breeding and conservation programs. Semen samples were collected from 10 roosters of each breed and analyzed for macroscopic and microscopic traits. The results indicated that both breeds exhibited semen quality within acceptable physiological ranges. Mean semen volume was 0.47 mL in Dong Tao and 0.48 mL in Ho roosters; pH values were 7.47 and 7.42, respectively. This study evaluates the feasibility for developing and maintaining a comprehensive tractor truck trailer database. The commercial motor vehicle (CMV) community currently lacks a cross-jurisdictional, centralized repository for commercial trailers registered in United States and Canadian jurisdictions. Existing federal databases provide information on interstate commercial motor carriers, vehicles, and drivers but exclude trailers. Similarly, IRP and IFTA do not collect trailer-level data, and trailer data is displayed inconsistently across its customer base. Approximately one fifth of violations in Kentucky during inspections from 2020 to 2022 were attributed to trailers, including worn tires, inadequate brakes or improper registration. The rise of …

The Defamation-To-Bankruptcy Pipeline In The United States And Around The World, Christopher D. Hampson

It has never been easier to ‘go viral’. With nothing more than a microphone, a smartphone, and some computer software, an influencer in today’s media landscape can reach millions. But that ease comes with risk: defamation lawsuits are on the rise, sending content creators to bankruptcy courts with judgments that far exceed everything they own. Last year, I analysed this trend in American law, which I call the ‘defamation-to-bankruptcy pipeline’, in Defamation, Bankruptcy & the First Amendment, published in the Journal of Free Speech Law.
