Objective: Hyperglycemic states (prediabetes and diabetes) are associated with heart failure (HF) risk. We aimed to identify distinct metabolites for subclinical cardiac dysfunction, a precursor of HF, in hyperglycemic or euglycemic individuals.
Research design and methods: We conducted cross-sectional and prospective analyses of 2,492 HF-free participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study visit 5, 2011-2013. A total of 1,297 participants were hyperglycemic (assessed on the basis of hemoglobin A1c >5.7%, fasting glucose >100 mg/dL, use of diabetes medication, or diagnosis), and 1,195 were euglycemic. We used logistic regression for analysis of association between 790 metabolites and cardiac dysfunction, …

Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard
Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard
Electrical Engineering
The Staubli TX60 and TX60CR are industrial-grade, six-axis robotic arms originally designed to perform complex automation tasks in manufacturing environments. Following their retirement from active industrial use, both units were restored to full operational status. As part of this project, they were reprogrammed to execute a pick-and-place routine using kids shape-sorting toys that mirrors typical workflows found in factory settings. The six degrees of freedom afforded by each robot enable a wide range of motion, making them well-suited for tasks such as material handling, product sorting, and repetitive operations typically carried out by human workers. Each model is equipped with …

Botulinum Neurotoxin Light Chain/A1 Uses Fast Synaptic Vesicle Cycling To Cleave Plasma Membrane Bound Snap-25, Alexander Gardner, Molly Sneller, William H. Tepp, Joseph T. Barbieri, Sabine Pellett
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) are the most potent protein toxins for humans, yet how BoNT-Light Chain/A1 (LC/A1) journeys to cleave intracellular SNAP-25 is understudied. Here we use a cell-based assay to measure cytosolic EGFP-LC/A1 intracellular trafficking and SNAP-25 cleavage in Neuro-2A cells. Intracellular LC/A1 associated on microtubules and co-localized with Rab GTPases involved in fast synaptic vesicles and endosome recycling. Multiple Dominant Negative (DN) Rabs GTPases involved in fast synaptic vesicles or endosome recycling inhibited LC/A1 trafficking to the intracellular plasma membrane and SNAP-25 cleavage. A cytosolic LC/A1 variant that bound the plasma membrane from the cytosol was insensitive to DNRab …
Horses And The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism., Thomas E. Lambert
Horses And The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism., Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Many scholarly articles and books have been written about the transition from feudalism to capitalism over the decades. The various points of views on what is the “main driver” or “prime mover” of the transition have been debated in various forums by historians and economic historians with a different major factor being advocated by different proponents or schools of thought. This paper tries to offer another analysis of how the horse could have been an important “means to an end” in the development of capitalism, and this analysis possibly can lead to support for more than one view of what …
The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch
The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
In recent years, roughly 30 nations have implemented regulatory regimes that mandate some type of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions disclosure from corporations. As GHG emissions disclosure regimes continue to take hold, several key questions arise: will they prompt meaningful and sustained reductions, or will they merely serve to document corporations’ unabated emissions? And if these regimes do lead to lasting emissions reductions, precisely what causes the changes in companies’ behavior? These questions are particularly relevant as climate advocates grapple with the merits of disclosure as a tool for real emissions impact, and as policymakers refine disclosure requirements to best fit …

Promising Strategies For Impacting Youth Development Systems From Christian Summer Camps, Rachael Botting, Jacob Sorenson, Karen K. Melton, Rob Ribbe Dr.
Promising Strategies For Impacting Youth Development Systems From Christian Summer Camps, Rachael Botting, Jacob Sorenson, Karen K. Melton, Rob Ribbe Dr.
Journal of Youth Development
As research on summer camp continues to expand and both scholars and practitioners gain a better understanding of the impact of the experience, it has become important to explore how the experience of summer camp is connected to the larger ecology of youth development. This study explores strategies of Christian summer camps for impacting faith in the home through interviews with 20 Christian summer camp leaders across three faith-based camping organizations: Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA), Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (LOM), and United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries (UMCRM). Using semi-structured interviews and an appreciative inquiry approach, this study identified …
Designing The Protocol For An Experimental Flight Simulation Study Encouraging Fuel Efficient Behavior, Thomas S. Reardon
Designing The Protocol For An Experimental Flight Simulation Study Encouraging Fuel Efficient Behavior, Thomas S. Reardon
Theses and Dissertations
This study designed and tested an experimental instrument to examine how pilots respond to fuel efficiency feedback in a flight simulator. A standardized flight plan, script, and hardware setup were created using X-Plane 12 software and physical flight simulator hardware. The chosen sortie guided participants from Monterey Regional Airport to Moffett Federal Airfield using instrument flight rules (IFR). The flight script provided step-by-step guidance to ensure consistent behavior across participants. The simulator was mapped to match real cockpit controls and allowed for precise data collection including flight time, altitude, heading, and fuel use. The goal was to support a larger …
Joinder, Not Jurisdiction: Toward A New Theory Of Standing, Adam N. Steinman
Joinder, Not Jurisdiction: Toward A New Theory Of Standing, Adam N. Steinman
Faculty Scholarship
This Article builds on an important development in the Supreme Court’s standing jurisprudence to propose a novel theory that would allow more meaningful access to federal courts while vindicating legitimate separation-of-powers concerns. In its recent decision in TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez, the Supreme Court endorsed a theory of standing based on Article II, writing that litigation between private parties—even when explicitly authorized by Congress—can run afoul of the executive branch’s interest in “how to prioritize and how aggressively to pursue legal actions against defendants who violate the law.” This Article II move has been justifiably criticized. But it is …
Empirical Methods In Contract Law, Monika Leszczynska
Empirical Methods In Contract Law, Monika Leszczynska
Faculty Scholarship
Researchers employ various empirical methods to provide insights into contractual legal issues. For instance, systematic content analysis has been used to examine the terms of contracts or court judgments in contractual disputes. This approach, though different from doctrinal methods, enhances our understanding of legal content. Surveys and experimental methods, on the other hand, provide evidence on people's perceptions of contract terms or contractual behavior such as consent, misrepresentation, or breach. The findings from these studies inform contract law theories, which are based on assumptions about behavior in contractual relationships. Empirical studies also strengthen arguments in normative research by providing evidence …

We implement and experimentally demonstrate a 60 GHz distributed system leveraging an optical time synchronization system that provides precise time and frequency alignment between independent elements of the distributed mesh. Utilizing such accurate coherence, we perform receive beamforming with interference rejection and transmit nulling. In these configurations, the system achieves a coherent gain over an incoherent network of N nodes, significantly improving the relevant signal power ratios. Our system demonstrates extended array phase coherence times, enabling advanced techniques. Results from over-the-air experiments demonstrate a 14.3 dB signal-to-interference-plus-noise improvement in interference-laden scenarios with a contributing 13.5 dB null towards interference in …

Orographic Wave Activity At Mesospheric Altitude Over The Southern Ocean Islands Observed By The Atmospheric Waves Experiment, P.-D. Pautet, S. D. Eckermann, L. Scherliess, J. Ma, Y. Zhao
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
A major source for the gravity waves (GW) measured in the stratosphere and higher is the orographic forcing produced by the tropospheric wind blowing over mountainous regions. Recent studies have shown that even small islands can generate waves which, under appropriate conditions, are able to penetrate above 80 km altitude, transporting large amount of momentum into the upper atmosphere. Investigating the exact effects of those islands is challenging because ground-based and even airborne measurements are limited above those generally isolated places.
The Utah State University (USU) Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) was designed and built to study mesospheric GW globally, even …
