Ai, Celebrities, And Their Fans: The Cyber-Pseudo-Event*, Gabbie Iorio
Ai, Celebrities, And Their Fans: The Cyber-Pseudo-Event*, Gabbie Iorio
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Tech companies often use celebrities to facilitate adoption of new technologies, and they’re doing the same with AI. For example, Meta is employing celebrities to attract users to their AI products, not only to adopt the technology, but to provide the company data for testing and optimizing the products. Fan communities, such as Nicki Minaj’s Barbz, have also taken up AI technology as a new medium for fandom expression. This paper will explore the varying degrees of success of these applications of AI technology, while putting them in conversation with scholarship on images, celebrity, and fandom.

Does Writing Have A Future?, David J. Gunkel
Does Writing Have A Future?, David J. Gunkel
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Professor David J. Gunkel is the Chair of the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University – but that is his latest achievement in an extensive list of accomplishments. He is an award-winning educator, researcher, and the author of more than ninety scholarly articles and thirteen books. And it is his latest book, AI for Communication, and his latest thinking about what we have called artificial intelligence and writing that brought him to our 82nd annual conference.
In his keynote address on Saturday, October 9th, 2024, Dr. Gunkel argues that AI does not signal the “end …

Objective: Hyperglycemic states (prediabetes and diabetes) are associated with heart failure (HF) risk. We aimed to identify distinct metabolites for subclinical cardiac dysfunction, a precursor of HF, in hyperglycemic or euglycemic individuals.
Research design and methods: We conducted cross-sectional and prospective analyses of 2,492 HF-free participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study visit 5, 2011-2013. A total of 1,297 participants were hyperglycemic (assessed on the basis of hemoglobin A1c >5.7%, fasting glucose >100 mg/dL, use of diabetes medication, or diagnosis), and 1,195 were euglycemic. We used logistic regression for analysis of association between 790 metabolites and cardiac dysfunction, …
Optimizing Object Detection For Remote Monitoring With Owl Ducklink Radios, Colin Ren-Jin Babian
Optimizing Object Detection For Remote Monitoring With Owl Ducklink Radios, Colin Ren-Jin Babian
Electrical Engineering
This project develops an AI powered object detection system integrated with OWL DuckLink radios to enable real time remote monitoring. The system benchmarks multiple AI accelerators using a Raspberry Pi 5 to determine their efficiency in low power, long range communication environments. By evaluating the Raspberry Pi 5 CPU (7.62W, 14.5 camera FPS, 3.8 inference FPS), Raspberry Pi AI Camera with Sony IMX500 (6.45W, 30 camera FPS, 9.2 inference FPS), and Raspberry Pi AI Hat with Hailo-8L chipset (7.80W, 30 camera FPS, >30 inference FPS), this project identifies the most effective combination of hardware and software for edge AI applications. …
Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard
Restoration Of 6-Axis Industrial-Grade Robotic Arms, Bryce Andrew Paulson, Warren Douglas Howard
Electrical Engineering
The Staubli TX60 and TX60CR are industrial-grade, six-axis robotic arms originally designed to perform complex automation tasks in manufacturing environments. Following their retirement from active industrial use, both units were restored to full operational status. As part of this project, they were reprogrammed to execute a pick-and-place routine using kids shape-sorting toys that mirrors typical workflows found in factory settings. The six degrees of freedom afforded by each robot enable a wide range of motion, making them well-suited for tasks such as material handling, product sorting, and repetitive operations typically carried out by human workers. Each model is equipped with …
The Future Of Dental Hygiene Starts With Us, Allen Vean Dmd
The Future Of Dental Hygiene Starts With Us, Allen Vean Dmd
Metro Denver Dental Society Articulator Magazine
This article explores the evolving landscape of dental hygiene education and workforce needs in Colorado. Amid a critical shortage of dental hygienists following COVID-19, Colorado faces increasing demand, leading to expanded educational opportunities, streamlined licensure, and the need for mentorship to ensure new graduates’ transition and retention in dental practices. The author emphasizes that supportive work environments and leadership are essential for attracting and sustaining hygienists.

Botulinum Neurotoxin Light Chain/A1 Uses Fast Synaptic Vesicle Cycling To Cleave Plasma Membrane Bound Snap-25, Alexander Gardner, Molly Sneller, William H. Tepp, Joseph T. Barbieri, Sabine Pellett
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) are the most potent protein toxins for humans, yet how BoNT-Light Chain/A1 (LC/A1) journeys to cleave intracellular SNAP-25 is understudied. Here we use a cell-based assay to measure cytosolic EGFP-LC/A1 intracellular trafficking and SNAP-25 cleavage in Neuro-2A cells. Intracellular LC/A1 associated on microtubules and co-localized with Rab GTPases involved in fast synaptic vesicles and endosome recycling. Multiple Dominant Negative (DN) Rabs GTPases involved in fast synaptic vesicles or endosome recycling inhibited LC/A1 trafficking to the intracellular plasma membrane and SNAP-25 cleavage. A cytosolic LC/A1 variant that bound the plasma membrane from the cytosol was insensitive to DNRab …
Horses And The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism., Thomas E. Lambert
Horses And The Transition From Feudalism To Capitalism., Thomas E. Lambert
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Many scholarly articles and books have been written about the transition from feudalism to capitalism over the decades. The various points of views on what is the “main driver” or “prime mover” of the transition have been debated in various forums by historians and economic historians with a different major factor being advocated by different proponents or schools of thought. This paper tries to offer another analysis of how the horse could have been an important “means to an end” in the development of capitalism, and this analysis possibly can lead to support for more than one view of what …
The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch
The Behavioral Effects Of Corporate Ghg Emissions Disclosures, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
In recent years, roughly 30 nations have implemented regulatory regimes that mandate some type of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions disclosure from corporations. As GHG emissions disclosure regimes continue to take hold, several key questions arise: will they prompt meaningful and sustained reductions, or will they merely serve to document corporations’ unabated emissions? And if these regimes do lead to lasting emissions reductions, precisely what causes the changes in companies’ behavior? These questions are particularly relevant as climate advocates grapple with the merits of disclosure as a tool for real emissions impact, and as policymakers refine disclosure requirements to best fit …

Climate Litigation Report 2025 — Climate Change In The Courtroom: Trends, Impacts And Emerging Lessons, Maria Antonia Tigre, Margaret Barry
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
The Climate Litigation Report 2025 updates previous United Nations Environment Programme reports published in 2017, 2020, and 2023. It provides judges, lawyers, advocates, policy makers, researchers, environmental defenders (including child and women defenders), NGOs, businesses, and the international community with an essential resource to understand the current state of global climate litigation. The report includes descriptions of the key trends in climate litigation and the most important issues that courts have faced in the course of climate change cases.
