Descriptive Inquiry To Advance Democracy In Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Preparation, Soyoung Park, Rae Leeper

The field of early childhood special education continues to be dominated by deficit-based perspectives of young disabled children. In contrast, Descriptive Inquiry supports educators to see children as multifaceted and full of strengths, promoting the democratic aim of schooling to nurture individual human flourishing for the good of society. Through a qualitative discourse analysis, we explore how 36 graduate students applied Descriptive Inquiry to their work with young disabled children. We highlight four cases of graduate students and their focus children in this article. Our findings indicate that Descriptive Inquiry can serve an important means of advancing democracy for young …

ackground: A sense of belonging, defined as acceptance, inclusion, and identity within a group, significantlyinfluences nursing students’ academic and social integration into college. Limited belonging causes studentattrition.Aim: This research explored factors influencing nursing students’ sense of belonging and identified elementspromoting or hindering this feeling.Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive comparative study that was conducted with undergraduatenursing students (N = 201) from multiple campuses at a southwestern U.S. university. Data were collectedvia an anonymous survey using the Department Sense of Belonging and Involvement (DeSBI) tool. From Deficit To Wealth: Amplifying Voices And Cultural Capital Of Latiné Families To Support Multilingual Learner Education, Hazel Vega, Katie M. Crook, Emily Howell, Lindsey W. Rowe, C. C. Bates

Seeking to amplify families’ voices, this study reports on focus groups with Latiné parents of multilingual students (MLs). We draw from two theories: the dual capacity-building framework, which conceptualizes family engagement as a relational and culturally sustaining partnership, and the community cultural wealth theory, which highlights unrecognized forms of capital marginalized populations bring to education. This design-based research (DBR) aimed to build instructional capacity for ML literacy through teacher professional development and a caregiver course for families.
