Geographic Disparities In Birth Outcomes: County-Level Investigation On Pm2.5 And Low Birth Weight In The United States, Eunice Y. Park, Ranju Mainali
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Exposure to air pollution adversely affects health and is highly associated with birth outcomes. This study analyzes the relationship between air pollution and low birth weight (LBW; less than 2,500 g at birth) at the county level in the United States. Using the latest publicly available data from the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps across 3,027 counties and equivalents, simple and quantile regression analyses were conducted to test the association between the average daily density of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and LBW. The LBW data were from 2016 to 2022 from the National Center for Health Statistics and PM2.5 data …

Gnsi Decision Brief: American Shipbuilding: From Crisis To Made-In-America Opportunity, Guido Rossi, Randall Gentry
GNSI Decision Briefs
Among the most pressing national security issues the new Trump administration has committed to tackle is revitalizing American shipbuilding. In April 2025, the president issued an Executive Order for that purpose of restoring U.S. shipbuilding and providing a maritime action plan for cross-agency coordination. Many historians view the industrial shipbuilding during World War II as the pinnacle of American enterprise to address national defense needs. While in World War II the United States was able to produce around 7,100 large vessels, current reality is much different since that industrial capacity was reduced during the post-war years due to overproduction and …

Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sj: Master Architect Of The Company Of Poets, Timothy J. Wesley
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
It has been 107 years since the first collected Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ were published by the poet-scholar’s friend and confidant Robert Seymour Bridges. Literary commentators, historians, and theologians have sought to understand the great poet of the Jesuits since the posthumous release of the poetry to the wide world in 1918. Of the many angles on Hopkins’s life that have been analyzed and examined, we could name a few: his sublimated sexuality, his identity as a religious priest, the poet’s placement within The Victorian Period, a voice of apologetic theology within Modernity, a political eco-centric voice, and …
A Curse Or A Blessing? The Associations Of Political Knowledge With Partisan Hostility And Condonation Of Political Violence, Gabriel Miao Li
A Curse Or A Blessing? The Associations Of Political Knowledge With Partisan Hostility And Condonation Of Political Violence, Gabriel Miao Li
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
This study examines the complex associations of political knowledge with affective polarization and attitudes toward political violence in contemporary U.S. politics. Utilizing data from the 2024 American National Election Studies pre-election survey, the analysis highlights political knowledge's dual roles—as both a potential catalyst for partisan animosity and a critical resource promoting democratic stability. Consistent with recent research, more politically knowledgeable individuals tend to express intensified negative feelings toward opposing political parties, and this tendency is particularly pronounced among individuals who attach less importance to their partisan identity. In the meantime, increased political knowledge is also significantly associated with reduced condonation …

The court granted the tenant's motion for contempt, finding both the landlord and its principal, Karan Singh, in civil contempt for their willful failure to comply with multiple court orders and stipulations to repair a severe rodent and cockroach infestation. The court awarded the tenant over $21,000 in compensatory damages, including a full rent abatement for 11 months and $5,000 for personal property destroyed by pests. The landlord was given 30 days to abate the nuisance, after which the court would impose a $100 daily fine as a rent credit. The court also warned that failure to comply would result …

We have measured momenta of electrons and recoil ions in triple coincidence with neutralized projectiles for slow collisions between various anions and target atoms. From the data we extracted triple differential momentum and angular distributions of electrons ejected in detachment, in detachment with simultaneous target ionization (DI), and in detachment with simultaneous target excitation (DE). The DI rates relative to the DE rates depend sensitively on the projectile speed and on the properties of the target.

SKMC Student Presentations and Publications
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies has initiated a paradigm shift in contemporary spine care. This narrative review synthesizes advances across imaging-based diagnostics, surgical planning, genomic risk stratification, and post-operative outcome prediction. We critically assess high-performing AI tools, such as convolutional neural networks for vertebral fracture detection, robotic guidance platforms like Mazor X and ExcelsiusGPS, and deep learning-based morphometric analysis systems. In parallel, we examine the emergence of ambient clinical intelligence and precision pharmacogenomics as enablers of personalized spine care. Notably, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and polygenic risk scores are enabling a shift from …

Return To Sport And Performance Outcomes After Hand Fractures In Professional Baseball Players, Ryan W. Paul, Sean M. Wilson, Gaston Davis, Amit Syal, Steven B. Cohen
Rothman Institute Papers
BACKGROUND: About 7% of injuries in the Major League Baseball (MLB) involve the hand. Fractures of the hand are not uncommon in professional baseball players while fielding or from being hit by a pitch while batting; however, the outcomes of professional baseball players treated both operatively and nonoperatively are unclear.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to report the return-to-sport (RTS) rate, RTS time, and performance outcomes in professional baseball position players who sustained a hand fracture. The secondary purpose was to compare outcomes between positions and between operatively versus nonoperatively treated players. It was hypothesized that there would …

Strategies To Increase The Number Of Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color (Bipoc) Employees In Senior-Level Positions, Renée Michele Collins
Strategies To Increase The Number Of Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color (Bipoc) Employees In Senior-Level Positions, Renée Michele Collins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Ineffective strategies to increase the number of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) employees in senior-level positions can negatively impact financial performance. Some business leaders lack strategies to increase the number of BIPOC employees in senior-level positions and positively impact financial performance, which could increase risk of business instability. Grounded in multidimensional cultural competency framework; equity, diversity, and inclusion theory; and change management theory, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was conducted to identify and explore effective strategies business leaders use to increase the number of BIPOC employees in senior-level positions and positively impact financial performance. The participants were eight business …

From Cocaine To Avocados: Criminal Market Expansion And Violence, Chelsea Estancona Ph.D., Lucía Tiscornia

Most of what we know about organized criminal violence comes from research on illicit narcotics markets. Yet criminal groups also fight to capture markets for licit commodities, as evidenced by Sicilian lemons and Mexican avocados. When do organized criminal groups violently expand into markets for licit goods? We argue that rapid increases in the share of a good’s export value create opportunities for immediate profit and future market manipulation. These opportunities lead to violence as groups expand their territorial holdings and economic portfolio. We provide subnational evidence of our mechanism using data on avocado exports from Mexico, and address reverse …

The court held the landlord in contempt for failing to restore the tenant to possession after an illegal lockout, awarding the tenant a money judgment for damages and attorney fees. The landlord had destroyed the apartment, rendering it uninhabitable and violating a prior stipulation to make repairs. The court found that the landlord's failure to comply with the so-ordered stipulation was a clear and unequivocal violation. It awarded the tenant $18,330 in compensatory damages for hotel fees, a $3,000 judgment for attorney fees, and imposed a continuing daily fine of $195 until the landlord restores the tenant to possession of …

All Decisions
In this nonpayment proceeding for a 3-unit building, the Civil Court of the City of New York granted the tenant's motion for a directed verdict, dismissing the petition. The landlord failed to establish a prima facie case by not providing a complete lease with rental amounts or a proper rent breakdown. Although the tenant testified to a $1,650 monthly rent, the rent demand sought $2,900, rendering it defective and non-amendable. The court also noted the landlord's violation of a discovery order to produce all necessary documents. The tenant's counterclaims were severed without prejudice.
