Exploring Cultural Dimensions Of Nurses' Experiences During Covid-19 In The Us And Hungary, Kala Mayer, Judit Staller, Jo Anne Bennett, Zoltán Balogh, Jeanie Skibiski, Anna Jeney, Soojung Jo, Elizabeth Reifsnider

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Both the Hungarian and U.S. public health and care systems were inadequately prepared to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to significant distress among nurses. The role of geographical, gender, and cultural factors, along with leadership and organizational response during the pandemic between countries, remains underexplored in the literature. Nurses around the world are now more likely than before the pandemic to leave direct patient care roles. Cultural influences and healthcare system structure play crucial roles in shaping nurses' decisions to stay in or leave the profession. To address this research gap, we are using the lens of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions …

Instituting Nonjudicial Foreclosure In Florida: When It Comes To Foreclosure, Florida's Judiciary Should Let Lenders Lead, Brian Tackenberg Sep 2025

Instituting Nonjudicial Foreclosure In Florida: When It Comes To Foreclosure, Florida's Judiciary Should Let Lenders Lead, Brian Tackenberg

Florida Law Review

The State of Florida has the highest inventory of foreclosed homes in the nation, the highest payment delinquency rate in the nation, and the slowest foreclosure system in the nation. This combination of factors has created a foreclosure crisis in Florida that eclipses the problems experienced by any other state. Florida's inability to work through this crisis has crippled any potential recovery in the housing market and is putting Florida at an economic disadvantage. Based upon current analysis, the number of foreclosures is only predicted to rise in the near future. Unless Florida is able to reform its foreclosure system …

Autonomous Versus Collaborative Online Professional Development: Discovering The Differences In Teacher Learning And Perceptions, Michelle Thomas, Heather Tellier, Jennifer Urbach, Corey Pierce Ph.D., Holly Baker-Hill

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

Online, asynchronous professional development (PD) offers flexibility for learners, yet what is the most effective way to provide online PD? While current research suggests online platforms can be effective for learning, there is a lack of studies examining differences between fully autonomous, asynchronous modules and those that are asynchronous but still collaborative. This mixed-method study examined the learning differences and perceptions between two cohorts of special education teachers as they went through an eight-unit online course on dyslexia. One cohort received an autonomous platform without interaction among the students or instructor. The other cohort received the same content, but online …

Converting 3-Stage Huffman Encoder To A Single-Stage Encoder, N/A Sep 2025

Converting 3-Stage Huffman Encoder To A Single-Stage Encoder, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

A single-stage Huffman encoder may be built offline to simplify an encoding process and reduce latency and/or complexity associated with encoding. The process for Huffman encoding includes frequency analysis for determining frequencies of symbols in input data, constructing a binary tree where the most frequent symbols are assigned shorter codewords to represent them, and encoding values for the input data using the codewords. A codebook that includes the codewords representing all symbols represented in the binary tree is made available to both the encoder and decoder simultaneously. The values can be encoded by selecting a codebook applicable for a given …

Training A Multimodal Llm As A Customized Product Support Agent, Manoj Muthamizh Selvan

Defensive Publications Series

While users routinely use multimodal conversational agents powered by a large language model (LLM) as tools to obtain answers related to use or troubleshooting of a product (product support queries), general purpose LLMs may on occasion provide inconsistent and/or inaccurate responses. This can lead to a poor customer experience and a higher number of escalations to a human product support team. This disclosure describes techniques to train or fine-tune a generic multimodal large language model (LLM) to function as a specialized product support agent. The custom training uses help articles and documentation, product training/ testing videos, and other product-related materials …

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl Sep 2025

What Kind Of Economists Do We Want? From A One-Track To A Two-Track Mind, Magnus Henrekson, Lars Jonung, Mats Lundahl

Economic and Business Review

We explore the challenges facing the current academic training of economists in small European countries such as Sweden. The monolithic focus on publishing in the top-five journals, which prioritizes methodological rigor over problem-driven research, is often a threat to social relevance and policy applicability. This limits pluralism, excludes many talented economists, and fails to prepare graduates for nonacademic positions. We propose a two-track model for PhD training and academic evaluation, emphasizing both traditional research and applied economic policy, tailored to the diverse needs of academia, public administration, and business. We also argue for broader evaluation criteria, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and …

Servicification Of Manufacturing In Global Value Chains: How Services Trade And Foreign Direct Investment Shape Export Quality And Volume, Jakob Stemberger, Katja Zajc Kejžar Sep 2025

Servicification Of Manufacturing In Global Value Chains: How Services Trade And Foreign Direct Investment Shape Export Quality And Volume, Jakob Stemberger, Katja Zajc Kejžar

Economic and Business Review

This study examines the role of services trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in shaping export performance among manufacturing firms participating in global value chains. Using firm-product-destination level panel data for Slovenia (2008-2020), the analysis investigates whether servicification-the growing integration of services into manufacturing-enhances firms' export quality and export volume. The findings reveal that services imports at the destination level significantly enhance export quality, particularly for consumer and intermediate goods, while services exports positively influence export volumes, suggesting strong complementarities between goods and services trade. Outward FDI is a key driver of both higher export quality and volume, while inward …

Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure And Financial Performance: Empirical Evidence From Vietnam, Nguyen T. Tran, Nhung T. Le, Tung D. Nguyen

Economic and Business Review

This study examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and firm performance, with particular attention to CSR's role as a mitigating mechanism during periods of economic crisis, notably the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a unique hand-collected dataset comprising CSR disclosures from Vietnamese publicly listed firms in the VNR500 index between 2014 and 2021, the analysis employs both accounting-based (return on equity) and market-based (Tobin's Q) performance indicators. The empirical findings indicate a positive association between CSR disclosure and firm performance across both measures. Disaggregated analysis reveals that governance-related disclosures significantly enhance market valuation, whereas the presence of a …

The Effect Of Disaggregated Country Risk On Foreign Portfolio Investment Flows In South Africa, Paul-Francois Muzindutsi, Tristan Kyle Govender, Nokwanda Nkwanyana, Sanelisiwe Zulu, Nondumiso Myeni, Sinegugu Khuzwayo, Fikile Dube Sep 2025

The Effect Of Disaggregated Country Risk On Foreign Portfolio Investment Flows In South Africa, Paul-Francois Muzindutsi, Tristan Kyle Govender, Nokwanda Nkwanyana, Sanelisiwe Zulu, Nondumiso Myeni, Sinegugu Khuzwayo, Fikile Dube

Economic and Business Review

This study explores the relationship between disaggregated country risk and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) flows in South Africa, focusing on both the long-run and short-run effects of economic, financial, and political country risk measures on net foreign purchases of shares (NFPS) and net foreign purchases of bonds (NFPB) during the period from 1995 to 2019. We employed autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) models to assess the relationships between the variables. The results indicate that all disaggregated country risk measures have a long-run effect on NFPS and NFPB, and the impacts of these risks are asymmetric. …

Self-Organization In Metal Plasticity: An Ilg Update †, Avraam Konstantinidis, Konstantinos Spiliotis, Amit Chattopadhyay, Elais C. Aifantis

Michigan Tech Publications

In a 1987 article of the last author dedicated to the memory of a pioneer of classical plasticity Aris Philips of Yale, the last author outlined three examples of self-organization during plastic deformation in metals: persistent slip bands (PSBs), shear bands (SBs) and Portevin Le Chatelier (PLC) bands. All three have been observed and analyzed experimentally for a long time, but there was no theory to capture their spatial characteristics and evolution in the process of deformation. By introducing the Laplacian of dislocation density and strain in the standard constitutive equations used for these phenomena, corresponding mathematical models and nonlinear …

Energy-Aware Optimal Reconfiguration Of A Heterogeneous Connected And Automated Vehicle Cohort On A Limited-Access Highway, Pruthwiraj Santhosh, Darrell Robinette, Daniel Knopp, Jeffrey Naber, Jungyun Bae Sep 2025

Energy-Aware Optimal Reconfiguration Of A Heterogeneous Connected And Automated Vehicle Cohort On A Limited-Access Highway, Pruthwiraj Santhosh, Darrell Robinette, Daniel Knopp, Jeffrey Naber, Jungyun Bae

Michigan Tech Publications

This paper presents an optimized vehicular reordering methodology designed to minimize energy consumption within heterogeneous cohorts operating at constant velocity on limited-access highways. The approach addresses the challenge of optimizing vehicle sequencing by considering both aerodynamic drag reduction benefits and the energy costs of reconfiguring a cohort from a stochastic initial state. This study provides empirical validation through on-road vehicle tests, demonstrating significant energy savings, achieving up to 10% reduction in axle energy for optimally configured cohorts compared to independent operation. A System of Systems (SoS) simulation environment, integrating micro-traffic, validated powertrain, and aerodynamic drag reduction models, was developed to …

Gw250114: Testing Hawking’S Area Law And The Kerr Nature Of Black Holes, The Ligo Scientific Collaboration, The Virgo Collaboration, The Kagra Collaboration Sep 2025

Gw250114: Testing Hawking’S Area Law And The Kerr Nature Of Black Holes, The Ligo Scientific Collaboration, The Virgo Collaboration, The Kagra Collaboration

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The gravitational-wave signal GW250114 was observed by the two LIGO detectors with a network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 80. The signal was emitted by the coalescence of two black holes with near-equal masses 𝑚1=33.6+1.2−0.8⁢𝑀⊙ and 𝑚2=32.2+0.8−1.3⁢𝑀⊙, and small spins 𝜒1,2≤0.26 (90% credibility) and negligible eccentricity 𝑒⁢≤0.03. Postmerger data excluding the peak region are consistent with the dominant quadrupolar (ℓ=|𝑚|=2) mode of a Kerr black hole and its first overtone. We constrain the modes’ frequencies to ±30% of the Kerr spectrum, providing a test of the remnant’s Kerr nature. We also examine Hawking’s area law, also known as the second law …
