Pioneering work in bioelectrochemistry, particularly the employing of yeast cells to generate electrical current, had substantially favored the comprehension of bio electrochemical reactions. This foundational research has boosted the development of bio electrochemical systems (BES), which are significant for sustainable energy solutions. BES technologies, such as biobatteries, bio supercapacitors, and enzymatic and microbial biofuel cells, harness organic and biological systems to provide environmentally friendly alternatives for energy storage and conversion. Despite their potential, these technologies face challenges in achieving competitive energy densities and long-term stability compared to traditional accumulators and converters. Here, we introduce a new Ragone plot for BES, …

In a nonpayment case, a tenant successfully moved to hold the landlord in civil contempt for violating court-ordered stipulations. The stipulations required the landlord to correct a severe cockroach infestation by implementing **integrated pest management (IPM)** as required by NYC Housing Maintenance Code § 27-2017.8. The court found that the landlord's limited pest control methods—spraying and using traps—were insufficient and constituted disobedience of a clear and unequivocal court mandate. The judge ordered a hearing to determine the tenant's compensatory damages and directed the landlord to immediately begin proper IPM practices.

Knee osteoarthritis (kOA) poses a major health challenge worldwide, but current non-surgical treatments have limited long-term success and do not address the underlying disease process. This study explores the complex relationship between the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the endovanilloid system (EVS) in the synovial membrane of patients with kOA undergoing total knee replacement, focusing on how these systems relate to patient-reported pain and histological synovitis. Synovial tissues and fluid from patients grouped into high and low pain categories based on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) were examined for cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2R), transient receptor potential vanilloid …

Bidirectional photodetection is an emerging functionality in advanced optoelectronic systems, characterized by the ability of a photodetector to respond to the incident light under both forward and reverse biasing voltage. For this aim, a layer of silver oxide (Ag2O) is deposited on CdTe thin films, and then, directly, the fabricated Ag2O@CdTe samples on quartz and n-Si substrates are thermally annealed (from 100 to 400◦C). In general, the surface topography is driven by the post-annealing process; besides that, the crystallinity of Ag2O@CdTe samples is improved at 200◦C. The optical characteristics of transmittance and reflectance spectrophotometric measurements at normal incidence revealed a …

Still With Us: Formative Imperatives In The History Of Material Irish Whiskey, C. 1324-1980, Fionnán O'Connor
Theses, Doctoral
Whiskey is regularly discussed as a drink entwined with Irish history and society. That history, however, has usually been read as the immaterial social history of a single material commodity. It does not consider the varied, often dissimilar beverages that have been consumed as ‘whiskey’ or as ‘uisce beatha’. Even within the more recent history of the Irish whiskey industry, most of the grain recipes of Ireland’s closed distilleries have largely passed out of trade memory. This thesis examines the evolution from c.1324 to 1980 of amorphous whiskeys, indebted to their historical moments and materially responsive to their agricultural, …

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary toxicity can occur during radiation therapy of the lungs. Dose metrics evaluated at the lobar level can improve the ability to predict toxicity. Contouring lung lobes is challenging and time consuming. Currently there are limited dosimetry studies evaluating the dose to lung lobes. The purpose of this work was to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) lung lobe auto-contouring algorithm using radiation therapy planning images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty lung cancer patients from two institutions were analyzed, and a clinician contoured all five lung lobes [left upper lobe (LUL), left lower lobe (LLL), right upper lobe (RUL), …

Modulational instability (MI) is a fundamental phenomenon in the study of nonlinear dynamics, spanning diverse areas such as shallow water waves, optics, and ultracold atomic gases. In particular, the nonlinear stage of MI has recently been a topic of intense exploration and has been shown to manifest, in many cases, in the generation of dispersive shock waves (DSWs). In this Letter, we experimentally probe the MI dynamics in an immiscible two-component ultracold atomic gas with exclusively repulsive interactions, catalyzed by a hard-wall-like boundary produced by a repulsive optical barrier. We analytically describe the expansion rate of the DSWs in this …

The fully differential cross section is the most detailed quantity that can be measured or calculated to study ionization in few-body systems. For 75 keV proton collisions with helium, various experimental data are available. However, previous theoretical calculations found significant discrepancies across the entire range of data. In this work the wave-packet convergent close-coupling method is extended to calculating these cross sections for electrons ejected with energies from 1 to 75.4 eV. The approach utilizes a two-center expansion and correlated two-electron helium wave functions to describe the four-body proton-helium system. While there is good agreement with the experiment for electrons …

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic hypertension is chronically high blood pressure that is initiated and maintained through excessive sympathetic nervous system activity and has been associated with increased B1R (kinin B1 receptor) activation. We previously reported a central role for B1R in mediating inflammatory pathways in the development of deoxycorticosterone acetate salt hypertension. Additionally, we identified a causal relationship between B1R expression after Ang II (angiotensin II) stimulation, and that B1R can mediate the bidirectional interaction between neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. However, whether there are any interactions between AT1R (Ang II-type I receptor) and B1R, and if B1R can mediate the effects of …

Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Report
The Pepperdine private cost of capital survey was originally launched in 2007 and is the first comprehensive and simultaneous investigation of the major private capital market segments. This year’s survey specifically examined the behavior of senior lenders, asset‐based lenders, mezzanine funds, private equity groups, venture capital firms, angel investors, privately‐held businesses, investment bankers, business brokers, limited partners, and business appraisers. The Pepperdine survey investigated, for each private capital market segment, the important benchmarks that must be met in order to qualify for capital, how much capital is typically accessible, what the required returns are for extending capital in today’s economic …

Wave intensity analysis provides a novel approach to understanding the dynamic interactions between the right ventricle and pulmonary vasculature, particularly in pulmonary hypertension, a condition characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressures and vascular remodeling. This prospective study used wave intensity analysis to evaluate right ventricular and pulmonary vascular mechanics in 22 participants with pulmonary hypertension (including precapillary, isolated postcapillary, and combined pre/postcapillary pulmonary hypertension), and three without pulmonary hypertension. Forward and backward compression and decompression waves were quantified at rest and during incremental exercise (25, 50, and 75 W). Relationships between metrics of wave intensity analysis, hemodynamics, right ventricular function, …

BACKGROUND: Opioids are frequently used intraoperatively and during postanesthesia care unit care in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) cases and are commonly prescribed after surgery despite known adverse effects. This study examined whether in-hospital opioid exposure is related to postoperative opioid prescribing in opioid-naïve TKA patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included opioid-naïve patients (no opioid prescriptions filled during the three months before TKA) who had unilateral primary TKA between May 1, 2020, and November 30, 2023, performed by an orthopaedic surgeon. All patients were treated using the same multimodal pain protocol. Opioid prescriptions filled by patients during the three months following …

Financial Outcomes In Value-Based Care: A Comparative Claims-Based Study Of Medicare Advantage Patients In Investor-Backed Primary Care Practices Pre/Post Investment, Aaron Mark Bujnowski
All ETDs from UAB
Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are value-based care (VBC) models aimed at improving cost and quality through prevention to counter the traditional fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare care model, which disincentivizes preventive care and risks misuse and overutilization. Some primary care practices purporting VBC capabilities have attracted private capital investors, yet whether external investment improves cost outcomes has not yet been definitively established. This dissertation examines whether investor-backed primary care organizations participating in MA demonstrate statistically significant reductions in per-patient, per-year claims costs after investment for seven ambulatory care–sensitive conditions. The study applies two-way fixed-effects regression models to a sample of 98,014 patient-year …
