Unveiling The Interplay Of Electronic And Phononic Excitations In Laser-Induced Oxygen Activation On Ru(0001), Xiangrui Wang, Jiamin Wang, Paul Spiering, Liping Liu, Jörg Meyer, Jerry L. Larue, Hongliang Xin

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Understanding laser-induced dynamics on metal surfaces poses significant challenges due to the intricate interplay between electronic and phononic degrees of freedom, which evolve on distinct timescales. In this study, we introduce a machine learning-accelerated approach to molecular dynamics simulations that incorporates anisotropic electronic friction, providing deeper insights into these complex processes. Our framework extends the accessible time and length scales for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations, enabling a detailed investigation of the laser-induced activation of oxygen on the Ru(0001) surface. Statistical analysis reveals that strong electronic excitation dominates the first 800 fs after laser exposure. Beyond this timescale, energy deposited by electronic …

Ineffective diversity strategies for leadership roles that represent the customer base can negatively impact organizational success. Retail business leaders who struggle with achieving effective diversity in these roles risk impeding organizational performance, making it crucial for them to identify successful approaches. Grounded in the balanced scorecard theory and stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry project was to identify and explore the practical strategies employed by some retail business leaders to enhance diverse representation in leadership roles, thereby strengthening organizational success. In this report, the authors explain how the Tax Court's recent decision in the Facebook transfer pricing case - although widely viewed as a victory for the taxpayer, Meta Platforms Inc.- could instead be a Pyrrhic victory because it enables the IRS to pursue a potentially substantial periodic adjustment against the company. Culture is a powerful force in corporate compliance. Corporate culture shapes how employees behave, dictating whether, when, and how they follow the law. Cases arising out of cultural failures often involve public harm—plane crashes, poisoned rivers, tainted cancer drugs, and collapsed mines. Before these awful outcomes, however, the corporations that caused these harms fostered cultures that permitted the disregard of legal commands and public commitments. Managers disparaged safety regulations. Messages about profits and production drowned out messages about compliance and safety. Introduction One in six stroke survivors continue to experience arm and language disability at 3 months post-stroke. This study aims to identify which model(s) of integrated UPper limb and Language Impairment and Functional Training (UPLIFT) show promise for people 3 months to 24 months post-stroke. We hypothesise that at least one promising UPLIFT model of rehabilitation will be identified. Methods and analysis This is an adaptive Phase IIa master protocol umbrella design that includes four simultaneous Bayesian Optimal Phase II studies to evaluate individual UPLIFT interventions against prespecified objective performance criteria. Alaska is the most aviation dependent state in the United States of America, with almost a quarter of the population and the majority of named communities lying off of the limited road system. The importance of reliable aviation transportation, and the infrastructure underlying these networks, is paramount for these communities. However, the vast distances, remoteness, and rugged environments that make aviation so critical also make maintaining aviation infrastructure particularly challenging. Suicide is the leading cause of death in prisons and custodial settings globally. International studies have consistently shown that prisoners and detainees are at a higher risk of suicide compared to the general population. Despite Bangladesh having a large prison population, there is no scholarly work on suicide within these settings. Against this backdrop, this study explored online newspaper content analysis capturing the characteristics of prison and custodial suicide in Bangladesh from 2014–2024. Examining The Effects Of Firearm Lethality And Aggressors’ Intentions To Kill On Injurious Firearm Violence At American Schools: A Research Note, Brent R. Klein, Cory Schnell, Steven M. Chermak, Joshua D. Freilich

This study examined firearm lethality and aggressors’ lethal intent on injurious fatal and nonfatal school shootings using data from The American School Shooting Study, which covers 329 school shootings in the United States from 1990 to 2016. We developed a new multidimensional construct for measuring shooters’ determination to kill and examined firearm characteristics while considering confounding factors. We identified 11 distinct categories of shooters’ intent, with most showing a strong desire to kill. Both intent and weapon lethality significantly impacted school shooting homicides. Overall, we recommend that prevention and theoretical models should address both factors.

Reconceptualizing Metadata Management As A Design Discipline, Rebecca B. French

Faculty Scholarship

Libraries are increasingly exploring design approaches, but their utility has been overlooked in the area of metadata management. This article argues that metadata management should be considered a design discipline. Key elements of design epistemology and their relevance to cataloging and metadata work are explored through a case study of developing a workflow to update OCLC numbers in a library catalog. Conceptualizing metadata management through the lens of design provides a new view of the field that expands possibilities for education, advocacy, research, and practice.
