Additively Manufactured Bioinspired Microstructures For Active Surface Modification, Zefu Ren Oct 2025

Additively Manufactured Bioinspired Microstructures For Active Surface Modification, Zefu Ren

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Advancements in additive manufacturing have facilitated the development of bioinspired microstructures, which hold promise for applications, such as liquid transport, self-cleaning, and anti-icing. However, the controllability of these microstructures remains an area requiring further exploration. This research explores the design, fabrication, and active control of 3D-printed bioinspired microstructures for dynamic wettability modulation. First, the anisotropic scales of butterfly wings were replicated through optimized two-photon polymerization printing strategies, achieving directional droplet motion controlled by structural geometry and arrangement. The reversed wetting trend compared with natural wings revealed key insights into the structure–performance relationship. Next, microstructures were integrated with dielectric elastomer actuators …

Investigating Driver Perceptions Of Semi-Autonomous Vehicle Sensing And Response Characteristics, Molly Mersinger Oct 2025

Investigating Driver Perceptions Of Semi-Autonomous Vehicle Sensing And Response Characteristics, Molly Mersinger

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

As semi-autonomous vehicle (SAV) technologies become increasingly integrated into modern transportation, understanding how the public perceives their capabilities is essential for ensuring safe and effective human-automation interaction. This study examined drivers’ perceptions of SAV detection and discernment abilities across 28 driving conditions and how those perceptions related to expected vehicle behaviors in 17 corresponding scenarios. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses identified three perceptual dimensions: Traffic Infrastructure and Vehicle Recognition, Dynamic Roadway Hazards and Vulnerable Road Users, and Human Interaction and Contextual Cues. Moderate overlap between the first two dimensions suggested that participants viewed certain structured and dynamic roadway features as …

Resilience Engineering Via Bifurcation And Ecological Network Analysis: Demonstrated In An Electric Power Case Study, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro Oct 2025

Resilience Engineering Via Bifurcation And Ecological Network Analysis: Demonstrated In An Electric Power Case Study, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Modern systems are increasingly complex, interconnected cyber-physical systems that combine digital controls with physical infrastructure. This integration, along with the constant introduction of new technologies and actors into the network, enables reliable operation but introduces vulnerabilities to unexpected and varied disruptions and cascading failures, making resilience a critical concern. Traditional risk management and resilience assessment methods often struggle with the nonlinearity and dynamic behavior of these systems. This dissertation proposes a novel approach combining Bifurcation Analysis (BA) and Ecological Network Analysis (ENA) to enhance the understanding and improvement of system resilience. BA, a mathematical method from dynamical systems theory, is …

Adaptive Control For Spacecraft With Flexible Appendages With Unknown Parameters, Nicolo Woodward Oct 2025

Adaptive Control For Spacecraft With Flexible Appendages With Unknown Parameters, Nicolo Woodward

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Flexible spacecraft pose several challenges in control design due to the uncertain dynamical model and the underactuated nature of these systems. Adaptive and robust controllers are the common choice for these systems to either meet operational requirements like attitude pointing or to suppress vibrations. However, these controllers add complexity in the design of onboard Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS) and the Reaction Control Systems (RCS) for spacecraft maneuvering. The objective of this research is to control a system that undergoes unpredictable and unknown disturbances through onboard derivation of an equivalent reduced order model designed around mounted sensors. The proposed …

Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the potential impact of future sea level rise (SLR) scenarios on the city of Abu Dhabi. With climate change, many coastal towns are at risk of experiencing this type of natural hazard. Currently, no precise scenario simulations have been developed, mainly due to the use of low spatial resolution elevation data. Additionally, the difficulty in understanding the real impacts persists when analyses rely solely on traditional cartography and GIS methods. This dissertation aims to advance the field by offering a new approach, which involves creating a comprehensive dynamic 3D simulation with dynamic flowing water. This model, defined …

The Weight Of Stigma, Rebekah A. King, Michael S. Sinha Oct 2025

The Weight Of Stigma, Rebekah A. King, Michael S. Sinha

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Many health care providers, both implicitly and explicitly, perpetuate stigma in their treatment of patients classified as obese. While medical professionals understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment is ineffective, patients classified as obese are frequently offered limited treatment options that fail to account for their unique needs. Access to a range of effective treatment options has historically been limited, but new GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), have shown incredible promise in addressing the obesity crisis. Unfortunately, these transformative drugs are costly, in high demand, and not widely covered by insurance, rendering them inaccessible for …

Bridging The Rural Telehealth Divide, Deborah Farringer Oct 2025

Bridging The Rural Telehealth Divide, Deborah Farringer

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the historical development, regulatory landscape, and post-pandemic future of telehealth in the United States, with a particular focus on its original purpose: improving access to care for rural populations. Although Congress first authorized Medicare reimbursement for telehealth in 1997 to alleviate rural health disparities, federal and state regulatory frameworks—especially restrictions on originating sites, licensure rules, and HIPAA-driven technology requirements—significantly limited adoption for more than two decades. The COVID-19 public health emergency triggered sweeping temporary waivers that removed geographic limitations, permitted the use of common communication technologies, liberalized supervision and prescribing rules, and allowed audio-only encounters. These changes …

Splitting The Statute: Severability As A Canon Of Construction Or Constitutional Concern?, Amy L. Moore Oct 2025

Splitting The Statute: Severability As A Canon Of Construction Or Constitutional Concern?, Amy L. Moore

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the Supreme Court’s evolving severability doctrine and interrogates whether severability is best understood as a canon of statutory construction or as a constitutional limitation on judicial power. Tracing the doctrine from Marbury v. Madison through modern cases such as Champlin Refining Co., Carter Coal, INS v. Chadha, Alaska Airlines, Booker, and Seila Law, the Article demonstrates that the Court has oscillated between an interpretive presumption favoring preservation of legislative enactments and a structural concern about judicial lawmaking. It distinguishes between textual severability—excising unconstitutional statutory provisions—and application severability—limiting unconstitutional applications while preserving …

Exudation Entomology, John Buchanan

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

My master's project is exudation entomology. I propose a new area of entomology that will renew and reshape the science, answer questions that have been explored, and open new questions that have yet to be asked.

Exudation entomology is the study of exudates from arthropods. This includes (but is not limited to) honey, saliva, silk, secretions, venom, pheromones, paper, wax, and more. Other properties, such as bioluminescence, sounds, and odors, are also included. Exudation entomology will explore the chemical makeup of exudates, the anatomical mechanisms for how the arthropod produces the exudate, why the exudate is essential for arthropods and …

Illustrated Key To Third Instar Larvae Of Forensically Important Calliphoridae From Costa Rica, Roberto Esteban Morales-Montero Oct 2025

Illustrated Key To Third Instar Larvae Of Forensically Important Calliphoridae From Costa Rica, Roberto Esteban Morales-Montero

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Forensic entomology in Costa Rica formally began by the end of the 1990s decade, however, the keys utilized to identify the species of Calliphoridae, the most important family of flies that colonize decomposing bodies in Costa Rica, are a compendium of work done by different authors that not include all the species present in the country, and are not adequately illustrated, which could make the analyses difficult for people without the proper knowledge of the carrion flies, or may lead to errors in the identification. The objective of this work is to put together a properly illustrated key for third-instar …

Interpreting The Private‑ And Public‑Sector Service Criteria For Singapore’S Aspiring Presidential Candidates, Benjamin Joshua Ong

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The Singapore President's role is not only ceremonial: from 1991, it has encompassed the substantive function of serving as a guardian of public reserves and the integrity of the public service. A person must meet certain qualifying criteria in order to run in a Presidential election. This article focuses on one set of qualifying criteria, namely, the "service criteria": the requirement that candidates have had certain experience in serving in certain roles in the public sector or the private sector. The service criteria were last amended in 2016, and came to the fore in the 2023 Presidential Election following George …

Civil Liability For Invasions Of Privacy: Whither Singapore?, Yu Han Lam Oct 2025

Civil Liability For Invasions Of Privacy: Whither Singapore?, Yu Han Lam

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Intrusions upon privacy are becoming increasingly common in Singapore. Singapore has yet to establish a tort addressing this issue, although the SAL Law Reform Committee has proposed a tort of misuse of private information. Australia has also recently introduced a statutory tort of serious invasion of privacy. This article will argue for the need for a Singapore tort of intrusion upon seclusion, on top of the already proposed tort of misuse of private information, to cover more appropriately instances of intrusions upon privacy.

Beneficial Ownership In Domestic Tax Legislation, Some Clarity, But Far From ‘Well Established’: Hargreaves Property Holdings Ltd V Hmrc [2024] Ewca Civ 365, Vincent Ooi Oct 2025

Beneficial Ownership In Domestic Tax Legislation, Some Clarity, But Far From ‘Well Established’: Hargreaves Property Holdings Ltd V Hmrc [2024] Ewca Civ 365, Vincent Ooi

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The concept of beneficial ownership is extensively used in domestic tax legislation, but several decades ofinconsistent case law have muddied the waters as to exactly what it means. With the leading casesstopping short of the apex court, it is difficult to reconcile the cases and come up with a clear definition ofbeneficial ownership. The recent Hargreaves decision by Falk LJ (with whom Nugee and Peter JacksonLJJ agreed) represents the most structured judicial attempt to rationalise the concept to date. This notesuggests that, contrary to Falk LJ’s statement that the concept is ‘well established’, the law pre-Hargreaveswas far from clear. This …

Enhanced Control Of Liposomal Drug Release By Drug-Aptamer Complexes, Xiangang Huang, Yang Li, Matthew Torre, Rachelle Shao, Wei Zhang, Zihan Wang, Daniel S Kohane, Christopher B Weldon Oct 2025

Enhanced Control Of Liposomal Drug Release By Drug-Aptamer Complexes, Xiangang Huang, Yang Li, Matthew Torre, Rachelle Shao, Wei Zhang, Zihan Wang, Daniel S Kohane, Christopher B Weldon

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

Conventional diffusion-controlled drug delivery systems (DDS) can have undesirable initial burst release, leading to potential systemic toxicity, and the rate of basal release can deplete content, shortening the duration of effect. Here, it is hypothesized that conventional drug delivery systems-using liposomes as an example-can be enhanced by incorporation of an aptamer that binds specifically to the encapsulated drug. Affinity of the aptamer to the drug within liposomes (Lipo-Apt) would slow release. It is demonstrated that this approach works with a range of relatively small and hydrophilic molecules, including tetrodotoxin (TTX), serotonin (Ser), and kanamycin (Kan). The in vivo utility of …

Performances In Last-Mile Deliveries Involving Cyclic Services Of Shuttles And Cargo Bikes, Byung Kwon Lee, Young Joo Kim, Joyce M. W. Low

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study introduces a novel approximation model that integrates the ideologies of order statistics and max-plus algebra in representing the collection and distribution service schemes of a last-mile delivery system. Under the respective schemes, electric cargo bikes (e-bikes) perform the last-mile delivery near a microhub with shuttles collecting packages from multiple local logistics hubs (or local hubs, for short) and/or distributing packages to multiple microhubs. The framework is designed to estimate the cyclic capacity under varying cargo carrying capacities of the e-bikes and service network configurations. Real-world data, such as the geographic conditions of the streets around the microhubs in …

Personality And Personnel Selection: Going Beyond Self-Reports And Linear Relationships, Filip Lievens, Jinyan Fan, Jingyi Li

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study of personality in selection and assessment represents one of the most longstanding and voluminous literature in industrial and organizational psychology. In this paper, we review two important recent research streams. First, we review studies on alternatives to self-report personality inventories, namely the use of Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs), assessment center (AC) exercises, and a multi-rater framework. Second, we review studies that go beyond linear relationships between personality and job performance. Generally, our review reveals that these alternative approaches show promises in better understanding personality and how personality relates to performance.

Information Provision And Search Frictions: Evidence From The Taxi Industry In Singapore, Sumit Agarwal, Shih-Fen Cheng, Jussi Keppo, Long Wang, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Search frictions and misallocation are common in decentralized transportation markets. Using novel trip-level data of taxis in Singapore, this paper examines the impactof real-time demand information at airport terminals on search frictions. The information reduces taxi supply misallocation, increasing deadheading speed by 16.3% and decreasing deadheading time by 10.77%, benefiting both passengers and drivers. It raises daily earnings by $3.70 USD and adds 6.2 minutes of operational time per airport-trip taxi. Spatial spillovers are primarily observed among drivers in adjacentdistricts. Taxis from the Budget Terminal and drivers with fewer prior airport pickups benefit more from this information.

A System Framework To Symbolically Explore Intel Tdx Module Execution, Pansilu Pitigalaarachchillage, Xuhua Ding Oct 2025

A System Framework To Symbolically Explore Intel Tdx Module Execution, Pansilu Pitigalaarachchillage, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present TDXplorer, the first dynamic symbolic analysis system for Intel's TDX Module, the software trusted computing base of TDX. Without using TDX hardware, an analyzer function on top of TDXplorer can not only apply dynamic analysis to control and instrument the TDX Module's execution, but also carry out symbolic execution for path exploration as well as security and functionality reasoning. The two types of analysis are seamlessly integrated in a way that symbolic execution is conducted directly upon the TDX Module's binary code and runtime states, which are shaped by using dynamic analysis techniques. We implement TDXplorer on Linux …

Parameter-Efficient Variational Autoencoder For Multimodal Multi-Interest Recommendation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw Oct 2025

Parameter-Efficient Variational Autoencoder For Multimodal Multi-Interest Recommendation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning user preferences in recommendation systems is enriched by multimodal features, such as textual and visual content, and amplified by multi-interest modeling with Variational AutoEncoders (VAEs). However, prior efforts are limited by single modality focus and cumbersome, parameter-heavy architecture designs. To address these limitations, we introduce an innovative solution that blends the semantic richness of multimodal data with the representational power of multi-representation VAEs. Drawing inspiration from Mixture of Experts (MoE), we cast each VAE as an expert tailored to a specific modality, then fuse them via a novel parameter-merging function into a lean, unified model. This approach efficiently captures …

Unsupervised Visual Chain-Of-Thought Reasoning Via Preference Optimization, Kesen Zhao, Beier Zhu, Qianru Sun, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning greatly improves the interpretability and problem-solving abilities of multimodal large language models (MLLMs). However, existing ap proaches focus on text CoT, limiting their ability to lever age visual cues. Visual CoT remains underexplored, and the only work [35] is based on supervised fine-tuning that relies on extensive labeled bounding-box data and is hard to generalize to unseen cases. In this paper, we introduce Unsupervised Visual CoT (UV-CoT), a novel framework for image-level CoT reasoning via preference optimization. UV-CoTperforms preference comparisons between model generated bounding boxes (one is preferred and the other is dis-preferred), eliminating the need for …

Ivycross: A Privacy-Preserving And Concurrency Control Framework For Blockchain Interoperability, Ming Li, Jian Weng, Jia-Si Weng, Yi Li, Yongdong Wu, Dingcheng Li, Guowen Xu, Deng, Robert H. Oct 2025

Ivycross: A Privacy-Preserving And Concurrency Control Framework For Blockchain Interoperability, Ming Li, Jian Weng, Jia-Si Weng, Yi Li, Yongdong Wu, Dingcheng Li, Guowen Xu, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interoperability is a fundamental challenge for long-envisioned blockchain applications. A mainstream approach is using Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to support interoperable off-chain execution. However, this incurs multiple TEE configured with non-trivial storage capabilities running on fragile concurrent processing environments, rendering current strategies based on TEE far from being practical. This paper aims to fill this gap and design a practical interoperability mechanism with simplified TEE as the underlying architecture. Specifically, we present IvyCross, a TEE-based framework that achieves low-cost, privacy-preserving, and race-free blockchain interoperability. IvyCross allows running arbitrary smart contracts across heterogeneous blockchains atop two distributed TEE-powered hosts. We design …
