While much of the existing scholarship on the 1980 Moscow Olympics focuses on Jimmy Carter’s infamous boycott, a closer examination from the Soviet perspective reveals a distinctive moment in Cold War history. Set against escalating global tensions following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Kremlin capitalized on the Games to project strength, unity, and international legitimacy. Although the Western boycott affected the Games, it created an opportunity for the USSR to showcase socialist athletic excellence and strengthen diplomatic ties with Non-Aligned nations, many of which resisted U.S. pressure to abstain. The Games were transformed into a carefully orchestrated ideological spectacle. …

Background: Concerns have been raised around whether calcium supplements increase dementia risk. This post-hoc analysis of a five-year double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial of calcium supplements for primary fracture prevention evaluated the long-term risk for dementia in older women, randomised to either calcium supplements or placebo. Methods: 1460 community-dwelling dementia-free Australian women (≥70 years) were randomised to 1200 mg/day calcium carbonate (n = 730) or placebo (n = 730) for five years and were observed for an additional 9.5 years afterwards. Introduction In 2020 and 2021, 280 health profession students who were engaged in student leadership roles and peer mentoring were invited to undertake extracurricular training in accidental counselling to build skills in recognising and responding to a person in distress. Context Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) is an interconnected, holistic, and strengths-based health and wellbeing approach fundamental to Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) in Australia. However, policy and funding trends increasingly threaten the capacity of ACCHOs to deliver CPHC by imposing burdensome administrative and accountability requirements. A central constraint is the marginalisation of culturally informed data measures and tools that could enable improved development, implementation, evaluation and reporting of CHPC services and programs. Membrane filtration has emerged as a viable technique for microalgal dewatering. However, fouling constraints limit their large-scale implementation. In this research, the fouling patterns during ultrafiltration of Chlorella sp. and Dunaliella salina were investigated using both dead-end and crossflow filtration modules. Chlorella sp. filtration in the dead-end module revealed an initial flux of 72.02 L.m⁻².h⁻¹ in the first cycle, which rapidly decreased to 19.18 L.m⁻².h⁻¹ within 30 min. Background/Objective: Temporal eating patterns and ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption have independently been associated with obesity and non-communicable diseases. Little is known about the temporal patterns of UPF consumption, as data is challenging to collect. Temporal data can be extracted from mobile food records (mFRs). The aim of this study was to identify the temporal eating patterns of those consuming UPFs using an mFR. Accurate prediction of raw wastewater characteristics can reduce laboratory costs, enable optimized chemical dosing, and improve the overall efficiency of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operations. This study evaluates machine learning (ML) models as a fast, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative for predicting Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Ammonia Nitrogen (NH4⁺-N) in raw wastewater. Seven ML algorithms, including tree-based, neural, and regression approaches, were trained using standard wastewater indicators, including organic load, nutrient levels, and pH, with hyperparameters tuned via grid search cross-validation. The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) demands efficient, grid-friendly charging systems. This study introduces a dynamic pricing framework combining short-term demand forecasting and deep reinforcement learning. Using Adaptive Charging Network (ACN) data, XGBoost predicts charging demand accurately (R² = 0.84, MAE = 0.45 kW). Compared to a uniform rate applied to all charging usage, set at 0.15 USD/kWh across all hours, with no adjustment for system demand conditions or time-of-day, the optimized strategy enhanced total daily revenue by 133 % and diminished load variance by 72.37 %. Trust is a crucial factor that influences human-automation interaction in surface transportation. Previous research indicates that participants tend to display higher levels of subjective trust toward lower-level automated systems compared to high-level automated systems. However, administering subjective trust measures via questionnaires can interfere with primary task performance, limiting researchers' ability to measure trust continuously in a real-world manner. In this paper, we apply data-driven optimization to estimate key parameters in a metric graph-based epidemiological model, with the aim of analyzing the effect of road networks on the geographic spread of epidemics. As a case study, we fit our model to data from the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland during 2021. Our dataset integrates county-level daily case reports, national census information, and traffic flow studies. This framework allows us to examine the relative contribution of specific travel routes over time and infer unobserved transmission patterns in the presence of incomplete or unreliable case reporting. Educational development is often scheduled during academic breaks with the intent of allowing faculty participation; however, this can actually make it more difficult for faculty who are in parenting roles, particularly during summer and school breaks when childcare options are limited. This article provides case studies from two different institutions describing approaches to offering childcare support to faculty participants in professional development. Ultimately, although both cases were successful, they were limited solutions to what is actually a much larger cultural problem. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that frequently persists symptoms into adolescence and adulthood. Diagnosing ADHD in college-aged individuals poses a challenge due to the lack of consistent strategies among clinicians for effectively evaluating adult ADHD. The purpose of this study was to determine the classification accuracy of the Behavior Assessment System for Children (Third Ed.; BASC-3) Inattention/Hyperactivity composite t-score in predicting the diagnosis of ADHD among college students. Results indicated that the BASC-3 Inattention/Hyperactivity composite demonstrated predictive power, high specificity (94%) and moderate-to-high sensitivity (70%), supporting its utility as a predictor of ADHD. This literature review synthesizes approximately 30 years of research on students from kindergarten through 12th grade with hearing impairments who are suspected of having a specific learning disability (SLD). Assessing SLDs in these students presents significant challenges, particularly when evaluating cognitive abilities using the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory of intelligence. This theory encompasses seven broad cognitive domains that influence academic success in reading, mathematics, and writing, including crystallized intelligence, fluid and sequential reasoning, long-term and short-term memory, visual processing, auditory processing, and processing speed. Since auditory processing is inherently affected in students with hearing impairments, this review excludes it from discussion. …

Continually increasing rates of autism necessitate research-informed preparation of pre-service professionals who will work with this population. This mixed-method study examined health and human services students’ autism knowledge, bias, and interaction to inform training and education needs. Results extend the extant literature suggesting autism knowledge and interaction are necessary but insufficient in mitigating bias. Specifically, the nature of prior interaction, positive or negative, shapes both bias and proclivity for additional interaction. Lastly, self-reflection was identified as a latent and potentially impactful factor in shaping a more nuanced and less biased understanding of autism. Recommendations for education and research are discussed.
