Background: Population-wide genomic screening (PGS) for genetic conditions such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome, and familial hypercholesterolemia presents opportunities to reduce morbidity and mortality among the 1%-2% of the population at elevated risk for these serious, preventable diseases. With decreasing sequencing costs and growing support from national bodies, there are increasing numbers of PGS programs in the United States. However, guidelines and strategies to support implementation are limited, especially regarding equitable access to PGS. This article examines the 1920 trial of Musammat Kelee, a Hindu widow from Ajmer-Merwara, accused of drowning her illegitimate infant son in a lake. Drawing on extensive trial records, police reports, and official correspondence, it reconstructs the procedural history of her case and situates it within broader colonial debates on female sexuality, widowhood, and infanticide. Kelee’s conviction under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, despite weak evidence, hinged on judicial emphasis on her widowhood and the perceived illegitimacy of her child as proof of motive. ECU-MALNETT (ECU MALware NETwork Traffic) is a real world, reproducible dataset of labeled benign and malicious network flows built from the Peekaboo execution corpus. Peekaboo runs evasive malware with dynamic binary instrumentation and records raw host-level PCAPs while granting full Internet access, yielding noisy, real-world captures with background OS activity and concurrent processes. To derive trustworthy labels from these traces, we apply Construct, a baseline aware, zero-trust labeling framework. Construct first ingests a baseline capture to establish reference sets (DNS qnames, HTTP hosts, TLS SNIs, and socket endpoints) and grows a conservative benign IP pool only via whitelisted DNS resolutions. …

Understanding wild bee diversity is critical for pollinator conservation, particularly in understudied tropical regions like coastal Ecuador. This preliminary study provides a photography-based assessment of bee diversity at Finca Botánica, an organic and regenerative farm on Ecuador’s central Pacific coast. Over a 10-day survey in December 2024, researchers documented 51 bee species across four families, with Apidae being the most represented. The study highlights a predominance of solitary, ground-nesting bees and a lower-than-expected diversity of Meliponini (stingless bees) and Euglossini (orchid bees) compared to other regions of Ecuador. Sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited blood disorder caused by a mutation in the β-globin gene, is characterized by sickle erythrocytes that are prone to hemolysis, leading to anemia and vaso-occlusion crises. In sickle erythrocytes, hemoglobin aggregation is followed by altered cation permeability and subsequent dehydration. Interventions that restore cation permeability can decrease hemolysis and ameliorate the symptoms associated with SCD. PIEZO1 is a nonselective mechanosensitive cation channel that regulates erythrocyte volume. Gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in PIEZO1 cause hemolytic anemia by increasing cation permeability, leading to erythrocyte dehydration in humans and mice. Directional cell migration by pulmonary arterial cells (PACs) is one of the important features of diseases involving arterial remodeling, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a disease that is often characterized by reduced arterial compliance and increased extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffening. However, there are no therapeutics that can halt the directional cell migration of PACs in PAH. The inability to identify drug targets or drugs against the directional cell migration during PAH pathogenesis stems from an incomplete understanding of the process and a lack of effective translational models for screening of candidate small molecules. Background: The Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network tested 6 therapeutic interventions initiated at the time of reperfusion after focal ischemic stroke in young mice, aging mice, obese mice, and spontaneously hypertensive rats. This randomized, controlled trial was conducted across 6 sites with concealed treatment and blinded neurobehavior assessments. The trial had an adaptive design with preset levels of efficacy and futility interrogated after each of 4 stages. The primary outcome was turning preference on the corner test at 1 month. Clinical trials support the iterative advancement of modern medicine. However, challenges in achieving population-representativeness or participant sampling commensurate with the burden of disease can limit the generalizability and reproducibility of trial results. Here, we present the recruitment strategies and cohort profile of the Engaging Adolescents in Decisions about Return of Genomic Research Results non-randomized clinical trial (NCT0448106), where traditional, targeted hybrid, and digital recruitment methods were implemented with quota sampling to enroll diverse adolescents (ages 13-17) and young adults (ages 18-21). The largest proportion of participants enrolled through digital strategies (39.1%), followed by traditional (34.2%), and targeted hybrid strategies (23.2%). …

Objectives: This study investigates the effectiveness of ankle distraction arthroplasty (ADA) using the Ilizarov frame in treating end-stage ankle osteoarthritis (OA) by evaluating changes in cartilage volume through semi-automatic MRI segmentation. Methods: The study involved 42 end-stage post-traumatic ankle OA patients from 2021 to 2023. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were conducted before surgery and 12 months post-treatment. Changes in cartilage volume of the talus and tibia were measured using semi-automatic segmentation methods. statistical significance was assessed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test. In a holdover proceeding, the tenant moved to vacate a prior stipulation of settlement and dismiss the petition, arguing the apartment was rent-stabilized. The court granted the tenant's motion, vacating the stipulation, judgment, and warrant. The court found that the building, constructed before 1974, de facto contained six housing accommodations, evidenced by Department of Buildings violations for cellar units and six mailboxes, despite the landlord's claim of four legal units. Consequently, the apartment was subject to rent stabilization, and the landlord's petition, based on lease expiration for an unregulated unit, failed to state a ground for eviction and was dismissed.

As a widely used spice, turmeric is rich in curcuminoids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the drying process, especially at high temperatures, often leads to significant curcumin degradation, impacting its bioactivity and quality. This study investigates drying turmeric using an innovative approach based on supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), and conventional drying methods (oven drying and freeze-drying) in terms of curcuminoid retention, color, solubility, chemical interactions, crystallinity, and morphology. The results revealed that SC-CO2 drying preserved up to 82.3 mu g curcuminoids /mg dried turmeric, which was significantly higher than the levels retained by oven drying …

This retrospective analysis across 3 hospitals evaluates antimicrobial stewardship interventions by clinical pharmacists, specialist pharmacists, and infectious diseases specialist pharmacists. Findings highlight differences in intervention types, urgency, and complexity, underscoring the value of infectious diseases specialist pharmacists in optimizing patient care and antimicrobial use within a multitiered pharmacy practice model.

We present some results from a project carried out in the Under- graduate Research in Mathematics (MATH 4380) course at TAMIU. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate that analytical solutions for a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) can be obtained using methods typically taught in an undergraduate ordinary differential equations (ODE) course, such as power series, undetermined coefficients, and Laplace transforms. Past work with bilinguals suggests that the acquisition of one language has an impact on the acquisition of another. What is unclear is the direction and strength of the relation between the two languages and whether the relation changes with age. Participants were children in South Florida who heard both Spanish and English at home. They were assessed in expressive (from 2.5 to 12 years) and receptive vocabulary (from 4 to 12 years). Both concurrent bivariate correlations and bivariate splines were used to evaluate the cross-language relations. Rapid diagnostic testing can improve pathogen detection and lead to targeted antibiotics. The BioFire FilmArray Pneumonia Panel (BFPP) is a multiplex PCR that has displayed strong concordance with traditional microbiologic techniques. However, most existing literature focuses on deep respiratory specimens, and there is sparse literature on performance in sputum specimens. Human noroviruses (HuNoVs), especially GII.4 strains, are the leading cause of acute viral gastroenteritis worldwide, yet no approved vaccines or antivirals exist. The pandemic GII.4 Sydney 2012 strain enters cells via membrane wounding and clathrin-independent carrier-mediated endocytosis, but it is unclear whether this entry mechanism is conserved across GII.4 variants. We compared early binding and entry of multiple GII.4 variants using wild-type and mutant GII.4 virus-like particles (VLPs) and modified human intestinal enteroid cultures. Only a subset of GII.4 variants, including GII.4 Sydney, form distinct, histo-blood group antigen (HBGA)-dependent capsid clusters on the cell surface.
