BACKGROUND: Histologic remission is increasingly recognized as an important endpoint in ulcerative colitis (UC) management. Consensus guidelines on adopting histologic scoring systems in clinical practice are lacking in the United States. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pathologists, primarily located in North America, regarding histologic evaluation in UC.

METHODS: This study surveyed a group of pathologists who have completed postdoctoral medical training with demonstrated interest and involvement in the field of gastrointestinal pathology to evaluate their knowledge, practices, and perspectives on histologic assessment using standardized scoring systems in clinical practice in UC patients. BackgroundSarcopenic obesity (SO) is the combined condition of sarcopenia and obesity, which commonly occurs in the older adult population. SO is associated with poor physical function, increased risk of musculoskeletal injury, and reduced quality of life and independence. Background: Mpox is recognized as a sexually transmitted infection, and the 2022 epidemic and 2024 resurgence of mpox cases through sexual transmission highlighted the need for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Our objective was to observe rates of STI testing and STI diagnoses in patients with confirmed mpox in Houston, Texas and New York City, New York (NY).

Purpose: Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common correlates of mental health problems in adolescence. However, research has yet to investigate whether IPV victimization is related to developmental changes in mental health, as well as the contributing role that TBI may play in conditioning this association. We address this gap by analyzing longitudinal data with well-validated measures of mental health from an ethnically diverse sample of adolescents.

Background: Recent data have suggested that germline genetic aberrations can affect outcomes in patients with large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) treated with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy (CART). However, a comprehensive analysis of germline determinants of response and toxicity after CART has not yet been described.

Methods: Genome-wide genotyping was performed in 170 patients with LBCL treated with standard of care axicabtagene ciloleucel. Polygenic risk score instruments for blood cell traits and inflammatory markers were obtained from the PGS Catalog and analyzed using PRSice-2. The success of nanoparticle-based cancer therapeutics relies on their efficient tumor uptake and retention. Given this, improving nanoparticle localization in tumors is paramount to maximize their therapeutic potential. A common approach to achieve this is to functionalize nanoparticles with active targeting moieties that bind to specific tumor-associated receptors. Among these, arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptides have shown a potential to promote tumor accumulation by targeting the ανβ3 integrin receptor, a receptor commonly overexpressed by tumors owing to its role in promoting angiogenesis, metastasis and proliferation. In recent years, there has been an increase in the frequency of severe weather events (like hurricanes). These events are responsible for most power outages in power distribution systems (PDSs). Particularly susceptible to storms are overhead PDSs. In this study, the dynamic Bayesian network (DBN)-based failure model was developed for different hurricane scenarios to predict the line failure of overhead lines. Motivation

Determining geographic origin of samples is a common objective in wildlife management, forensics, and conservation. Current methods often assume evolutionary models or require extensive reference datasets, which are costly and difficult to develop, that perform poorly with uneven or biased sampling. Supervised deep learning offers a promising alternative by learning complex patterns without prior model specifications. Combined with novel geo-genetic data augmentation and preprocessing techniques, it can reduce reference panel demands and improve performance across diverse sampling schemes, broadening accurate provenance determination to more study systems. The toxicological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their known bioaccumulation. However, time-resolved and longitudinal studies that examine in vivo bioaccumulation and clearance remain limited. Here we use Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopies to detect and track the presence of two PAHs: pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and one PAC: 5,12-naphthacenequinone, in murine organ tissues. Purpose of Review: This review explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and ectopic fat imaging. It aims to evaluate how AI may be used to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment. It addresses key questions regarding AI’s capabilities in risk prediction, segmentation, and integration with large volume data for CVD risk assessment. This article considers the history of Egypt’s mid-twentieth-century Spiritualist movement through an examination of its periodical, a monthly Arabic magazine called Alam al-Ruh (The World of the Spirit) (1947–1960). As it shows, Egyptian Spiritualists defended and promoted their project by crafting an experimental cosmology, one that blended claims about empirical verification with elements of Islamic and Spiritualist cosmologies. It further shows how this combination of scientism and cosmology reflects a core dynamic within the history of scientific exploration in the Islamic world. Like spiritual seekers and occult practitioners in Muslim societies elsewhere, Egyptian Spiritualists positioned their project as one of …

This article examines the information systems governing individual relationships to urban coastal waterways, drawing from two data publication initiatives in New York City. In these two cases, data structure and web design features cultivate specific forms of knowledge about water quality, pollution, and the health risks represented by recreational activities such as swimming and fishing. Analysis of the data structure and web source code shows the forms of knowledge concerning water quality each project facilitates or obscures. Background: We previously developed a digital quality measure (dQM) of emergency presentations (EPs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and found it to be associated with worse outcomes. Potentially avoidable EPs were common in this cohort, but identifying them required time-intensive chart reviews. We aimed to enhance the existing dQM to automate the detection of potentially avoidable EPs.

Materials and methods: We defined potentially avoidable EPs as those preceded by a CRC red flag (iron-deficiency anaemia or haematochezia ≥60 days prior, or positive stool-based screening test ≥180 days prior). The enhanced dQM was applied to a national cohort of incident CRC cases …

Endometriosis is a pathological condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial cells, leading to chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Epidemiological studies have associated exposure to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, particularly PCB126, with an increased risk of endometriosis. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain poorly understood. We utilized a surgically induced endometriosis mouse model and human endometrial cell lines to assess the impact of PCB126 on endometriosis progression. Mice were exposed to environmentally relevant doses of PCB126. Previous studies show that orphan nuclear receptor 4A1 (NR4A1) regulates endometriotic cell growth, survival, estrogen receptor β (ERβ), mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling and fibrosis. NR4A2 is also expressed in epithelial and stromal derived endometriotic cells, and in this study the effects of 1,1-bis(3'-indolyl)-(3,5-disubstitutedphenyl)methane (DIM-3,5) dual NR4A1/nuclear receptor 4A2 (NR4A2) ligands and knockdown of NR4A1 and NR4A2 were investigated. The dual NR4A1/2 DIM-3,5 analogs inhibited previously identified proendometriotic pathways and gene products, and they also inhibited TWIST1 and multiple markers associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
