Effect Of Backfills On The Corrosion Protection Performance Of Galvanic Anode In Rc Member, Hikaru Ikeda, Koichi Kobayashi, Motoki Onoda
Effect Of Backfills On The Corrosion Protection Performance Of Galvanic Anode In Rc Member, Hikaru Ikeda, Koichi Kobayashi, Motoki Onoda
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Galvanic anodes can supply corrosion protection current to steel by simply connecting them to steel in concrete and can prevent corrosion of steel for a long period. Furthermore, they are attracting interest because they do not require continuous monitoring nor other maintenance. Galvanic anodes are composed of a sacrificial metal, such as zinc, covered with backfills. The backfills contribute to a stable supply of corrosion protection current by maintaining the galvanic anode at a high alkaline level and by having high water retention. Their properties closely relate to the lifetime of the galvanic anode and its corrosion protection performance. Therefore, …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs) form the basis of a valuable class of sensors that have a number of applications in industry and are formed as a periodic variation in the refractive index of an optical fibre that reflects light at a specific wavelength depending on the strain applied to the fibre – this effect can be related to and then calibrated against the parameter to be measured. A number of different types of sensors have been developed for monitoring sewer structures, detecting strain and potential leaks in sewer pipelines by embedding fibres along the pipeline route and for monitoring the …
Use Of A Bulk Resistivity Index To Evaluate The Permeability Performance Of Blended Cements And Scms, Robert Douglas Hooton
Use Of A Bulk Resistivity Index To Evaluate The Permeability Performance Of Blended Cements And Scms, Robert Douglas Hooton
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Most specifications for supplementary cementitious materials focus on reactivity as related to strength development. However, beyond strength, the other major benefit from use of SCMs, whether added separately or in blended cements, is their impact on changing the pore structure of the cementitious matrix resulting in improved resistance to ingress of aggressive fluids, i.e. lower permeability. ASTM C1876 and similar test methods in other standards for assessing the bulk resistivity of concrete already exist, but in 2025, ASTM subcommittee C09.48 on Performance of Cementitious Mixtures has adopted ASTM C1952, a standard test method for assessing the relative bulk resistivity of …

Interaction Of Cementitious Systems Containing Nontraditional And Natural Pozzolans (Nnps) With Chloride-Based Deicers, Raikhan Tokpatayeva, Alberto Castillo, Jan Olek
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Given the growing scarcity of traditional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), interest in non-traditional and natural pozzolans (NNPs) is increasing. While much of prior research has focused on fundamental physical properties and mechanical performance, durability - particularly scaling resistance - remains a concern for concrete exposed to deicing salts. This study evaluated the matrix-deicer interactions of paste samples containing 25% of 11 different NNPs - including three calcined clays (CCs), three volcanic ashes (VAs), two fluidized bed combustion ashes (FBCs) and three ground bottom ashes (GBAs). Paste samples were exposed to CaCl2, MgCl2 and NaCl solutions and subjected to 50 freeze-thaw …

Toward Durable 3d Printed Structures, David A. Lange, Chenyue Shen
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Durability of 3-D printable concrete begins with control of flow and consolidation of the fresh material. 3D printed concrete needs to be fluid-like for pumping and extrusion but solid-like during placement to support the printed structure. High quality 3D printed materials must have excellent consolidation and a low volume of trapped voids. In practice, achieving this balance is challenging. This research addresses these challenges by leveraging machine learning and numerical simulation to model the fresh behavior of cement-based materials for 3-D printing. It begins with rheological characterisation to understand how mixture design factors influence rheological properties, laying the foundation for …

Chloride Transport In Low Clinker Content Concretes And Modeling, Pu Yang, Narayanan Neithalath, Manu Santhanam, Yuvaraj Dhandapani
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Chloride ion transport behaviour has been reported to be significantly influenced by the use of supplementary cementing materials in concrete, both due to physical effects such as pore structure refinement and chemical effects including chloride binding. This paper provides experimental results on diffusion of chloride ions through concretes containing limestone calcined clay as a cement replacement material at ~50% replacement level, demonstrating the beneficial effects of high-volume replacement of cement with calcined clay. A numerical simulation framework that considers the pore structure of concrete, the concentration-dependence of diffusion coefficient, and Freundlich binding is also presented. The diffusion model is augmented …

Challenges And Opportunities In Concrete Precast Sector And Its Transition To A Net-Zero Future, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Rory Doherty, Daniel Mcpolin, Marios Soutsos, Mark Russell
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This article explores key factors shaping the transition of the precast concrete sector toward net-zero carbon. While not exhaustive, it highlights areas of scientific and technical interest for a specialist audience. The discussion is structured around priority themes: beginning with cement and clinker replacement, followed by production efficiency improvements, rethinking steel usage, carbon sequestration strategies, and, finally, structural optimisation or volume reduction. These areas are often interdependent: for instance, clinker replacement, production efficiency, and structural optimisation are all influenced by the 16 – 18 hour production cycle typical of precast manufacturing. Unlike the readymix sector, precast operates on a fast-paced, …
Enhancing The Durability Of Concrete Structures Through Digital Twins And Advanced Numerical Simulation, Tetsuya Ishida, Yuya Takahashi
Enhancing The Durability Of Concrete Structures Through Digital Twins And Advanced Numerical Simulation, Tetsuya Ishida, Yuya Takahashi
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This study applies a digital twin–based multi-scale and multi-physics simulation framework for durability assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The framework integrates thermo-hygro-chemical and structural analyses using DuCOM–COM3 to capture time-dependent deterioration processes such as fatigue and corrosion, and to assess their effects on structural performance under realistic environmental and loading conditions. Two case studies illustrate the methodology. The first addresses the fatigue behaviour of RC bridge slabs under moving wheel loads in both dry and wet environments. Numerical simulations reproduced field-observed deterioration patterns, including top-surface disintegration in wet conditions, and led to the development of a simplified predictive equation …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Despite significant progress in digitalisation across various sectors, the development of data-driven applications in the built environment remains ongoing, with a focus on improving labour productivity and addressing global sustainability challenges. The circular economy framework for reusing and recycling construction materials is still underexplored. Metrics on the amount and impact of construction and demolition waste (CDW) highlight the need for more effective circularity strategies. Although the circular economy seeks to minimise waste, maximise material reuse, and reduce environmental impacts, practical implementation within the construction sector requires further development—an area where digital technologies can offer substantial support. This study introduces the …

Revising Specifications To Enable New Materials And Adapting To Performance Of Low-Clinker Concretes, Robert Douglas Hooton, Lawrence Sutter
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
To support the concrete industry’s goals of meeting net-zero carbon-dioxide emissions by 2050, new types of lower-clinker cements are being developed for use. While Portland cement will continue to be used as part of the cementitious materials in the bulk of applications, use of Portland cement as the sole binder in concrete is diminishing globally. Reducing the clinker content of concretes is complicated by the limited and diminishing availability of traditionally used Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slags, whether added as separate additions to concrete or as components of blended cements. This …

Sulfate Addition To Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag For Use As A Supplementary Cementitious Material In Concrete, Kevin Scully, Michal Drewniok
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The drive towards net-zero carbon emissions within the cement and concrete industry has seen the utilisation of lower embodied carbon materials such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). This can however lead to overlooking the technical performance of such materials. Current EN standards restrict additions to GGBS, limiting the sulfate optimisation of the aluminate rich material and thus potentially impacting the performance of the resultant concrete. In the UK and Ireland, GGBS is generally added as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) to the concrete mixer opposed to inter-grinding or blending in a binary or ternary cementitious system. Although practical in …

Influence Of Superabsorbent Polymer On Workability, Strength, And Shrinkage Of Mortars With Plain And Slag-Cement Binders, Chibueze Sylvester Ajuonuma, Raikhan Tokpatayeva, Jan Olek, Kendra Erk
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
As the global construction industry moves toward more environmentally responsible solutions, achieving both durability and sustainability goals in cement-based materials has become increasingly important. One of the main challenges in this effort is to effectively and economically achieve the desired levels of workability and strength of sustainably designed mixtures, controlling their early-age shrinkage, which can reduce long-term performance and service life. This study explores the integration of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), a promising internal curing agent, into plain and slag-cement mortar systems made with Type IL cement to enhance their dimensional stability while promoting sustainability. The experimental program evaluates mortars modified …

Bubbling Effect Of Air-Entraining Agents In Naoh-Activated Slag, Jun Ren, Tao Li, Mintai Tuo, Yunhong Cai, Dafu Wang, Jianghong Mao
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Surfactants, particularly air-entraining agents (AEAs), significantly influence the pore structure of concrete, thereby determining its durability performance, in which their role in alkali-activated slag (AAS) materials remains unclear. This study systematically investigated the foaming behaviour, rheological properties, and pore structure effects of four typical AEAs, in terms of alpha-olefin sulfonate (AOS), didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), disodium lauroamphodiacetate (DSLA), decyl glucoside (DG), the representive anionic, cationic, amphoteric and non-ionic AEAs, in NaOH-activated slag systems. Results indicated that AOS exhibited the strongest foaming capability, while DSLA demonstrated excellent foam stability across various environments. AEAs notably enhanced paste fluidity; a 1.5% DSLA dosage increased …
Effect Of Carbonation On Rebar Corrosion In Mgo-Sio2 Binder Concrete, Bharati, Dirk Engelberg, Cise Unluer
Effect Of Carbonation On Rebar Corrosion In Mgo-Sio2 Binder Concrete, Bharati, Dirk Engelberg, Cise Unluer
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
MgO-SiO2 binders are a promising alternative to Portland cement (PC) offering comparable strength performance to the conventional PC concrete. However, their application in reinforced concrete has been limited due to the inherently low pH of these binders. This study investigated the mechanical, microstructural, and corrosion performance of MgO-SiO2 binder concrete after carbonation. MgO-SiO2 concrete samples were subjected to 14 days of carbonation and subsequently tested after one year. The degree of carbonation was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis while corrosion assessment was done using Wenner four-probe resistivity meter, half-cell potential and a handled device called Rapicor. The results showed that MgO-SiO2 …

Decalcification Of Calcium Silicate Hydrate By Sulfate Attack: Material Degradation By Heterogeneous Charges, Muhan Wang, Xiangming Zhou, Chengbo Liu, Pan Wang, Dongshuai Hou
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Sulfate attack is a key factor limiting the durability of concrete in aggressive environments, primarily through the degradation of calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H), the main binding phase of cement. This study investigates the molecular mechanisms of C–S–H decalcification under sulfate exposure by combining semi-empirical Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) with density functional theory (DFT). A C–S–H model with a Ca/Si ratio of 1.5 was simulated in aqueous environments with and without sulfate ions. BOMD trajectories revealed that while C–S–H remained largely stable in pure water, sulfate ions rapidly promoted Ca²⁺ desorption, leading to silicate chain fragmentation and Q²→Q¹ transitions. Electronic structure …

Mdea-Enhanced Co2 Sequestration Via Steel Slag Waste: Mechanisms And Microstructural Evolution During Aqueous Carbonation, Yanming Liu, Tao Shi, Xiangming Zhou
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The current CO2 sequestration efficiency (CO2 SE) of steel slag waste (SSW) remains relatively low, and the underlying mechanisms of the carbonation reaction are not fully understood, limiting its potential for resource utilisation. In this study, N-methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) was introduced into an aqueous carbonation system to enhance the CO2 SE of SSW, and the associated reaction mechanisms and microstructural evolutions were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the addition of 5 wt.% MDEA increased the CO2 sequestration rate (CO2 SR) to 14.44%, representing a 68.5% improvement over the control group. MDEA enhanced CO2 dissolution and diffusion in the aqueous …
Fractal Characterisation Of Crack Tortuosity And Its Correlation With Permeability In Concrete, Yuan Shen, Tamon Ueda
Fractal Characterisation Of Crack Tortuosity And Its Correlation With Permeability In Concrete, Yuan Shen, Tamon Ueda
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This study investigated fracture behaviour in four concrete grades (C40-C70) through controlled splitting tests. Using high-resolution 3D profilometry, we quantitatively characterised crack surface morphology and proposed a novel fractal dimension metric for tortuosity D_T. Post-repair permeability tests on 12 specimens (24 fracture surfaces) revealed: (1) conventional tortuosity showed weak permeability correlation (R²<0.350), while (2) D_T demonstrated superior predictive capability (R²=0.430). The developed fractal tortuosity index provides a robust multiscale quantification method for crack flow mechanism analysis.

Experimental Study On Freeze–Thaw Cycles Response In Mortar Under Controlled Partially Saturated Conditions, Hussain Hafiz Wahab, Yanyue Qin, Xi Ji, Yuya Takahashi
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Freeze–thaw cycle (FTC) deterioration is one of the major durability concerns for concrete structures in cold climates. While many studies focus on fully saturated conditions, real structures often undergo FTCs under unsaturated conditions, where damage mechanisms are not well understood. This study investigates FTC damage in mortar under controlled unsaturated conditions to improve understanding of moisture-driven deterioration. Mortar specimens with water-to-cement (W/C) ratios of 0.50 and 0.75 were cast in thin specimens (100 mm × 100 mm × 10 mm) to promote rapid thermal response and enhance moisture redistribution, allowing for early detection of expansion. Specimens were preconditioned to specific …
Mechanical Behaviour Of Cement-Based Materials In Deep Seas: A Review, Yuichiro Kawabata, Keisuke Takahashi, Hong Song Wong
Mechanical Behaviour Of Cement-Based Materials In Deep Seas: A Review, Yuichiro Kawabata, Keisuke Takahashi, Hong Song Wong
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The ocean covers approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface, with over 80% categorized as deep sea. The deep sea, defined as depths greater than 200 m, is considered the most significant and last frontier within the marine environment. Emerging innovative projects have recently explored offshore wind power generation, seabed resource mining, carbon dioxide capture and storage, and deep-sea cities. One of the key challenges with construction in the deep sea is the high-water pressure, which increases by 1 MPa per 100 m of depth. The surrounding water pressure constrains concrete and increases its strength, but, because concrete is porous, seawater …

Durability Of Cement-Based Materials In Deep Seas: A Review Of Chemical Aspects With New Results, Keisuke Takahashi, Yuichiro Kawabata, Hong Wong
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The application of cement-based materials in deep-sea environments presents serious durability challenges due to high hydrostatic pressure and low temperatures. This study reviews previous research and presents new findings from field exposure tests, including a 3-year exposure at 3500 m depth. Portland cement (PC) and blast furnace slag (BFS)-blended systems exhibited severe degradation, with BFS-based specimens showing complete disintegration. Microstructural analysis revealed calcium leaching, C–S–H decalcification, and secondary phase formation such as ettringite and Mg-based hydrates. In contrast, calcium aluminate cement (AC) demonstrated excellent resistance, retaining its shape and chemical integrity even after long-term exposure. Thermodynamic modelling partially supported these …
Shear And Compressive Joint Behaviour Of Concrete Floating Structure For Offshore Wind Turbine, Maryam Imran, Satoshi Komatsu, Risa Yamada, Toyofumi Matsuo
Shear And Compressive Joint Behaviour Of Concrete Floating Structure For Offshore Wind Turbine, Maryam Imran, Satoshi Komatsu, Risa Yamada, Toyofumi Matsuo
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Japan's commitment to growing renewable energy generation from 30 to 45 GW has intensified the focus on offshore wind turbines. Due to the presence of extensive deep-sea waters, the installation of fixed turbines is impractical, making floating structures a more viable option. For supporting structure of said turbines, concrete is preferred over steel as it offers various commercial and technical benefits. However, the response of concrete in offshore environment is still under consideration. When considering rationalisation of construction, pre-casting of modules is one option, however in that case, it is necessary to clarify the behaviour of the joints. This research …
Investigation Of Corrosion Resistance Of Fly Ash Self-Compacting Mortar, Md Marghoobul Haque, Supratic Gupta
Investigation Of Corrosion Resistance Of Fly Ash Self-Compacting Mortar, Md Marghoobul Haque, Supratic Gupta
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
One of the leading reasons for failure of structural members is corrosion of reinforcement. Structures corresponding to the marine environment like ports, harbours and bridges are more susceptible towards the risk of corrosion. Chlorides are one of the main reasons for the initiation of corrosion which can penetrate from various sources like the marine atmospheric environment or the use of deicing salts in the colder regions. Corrosion is a long-term process, so, in this research, an accelerated corrosion testing of self-compacting mortar has been performed to understand the behaviour of addition of fly ash in the mortar mixes against the …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This study investigates the use of a conductive cement composite containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fibres (CFs) as a reference electrode for corrosion monitoring in reinforced concrete. For comparison, stainless-steel reference electrodes were also prepared. Both CNT/CF cement composite and stainless-steel electrodes were immersed in a 10% NaCl solution for three months to simulate a chloride-rich marine environment. The open circuit potential (OCP) of both reference electrodes was measured against a standard silver/silver chloride electrode (SSCE) over time. Two reinforced mortar samples and one reinforced concrete sample were tested under different exposure conditions. In Experimental Program 1, a mixed-in …
Utilisation Of Semi-Naturally Carbonated Steelmaking Slag As Concrete Aggregate, Sumire Nakamura, Yuichiro Kawabata
Utilisation Of Semi-Naturally Carbonated Steelmaking Slag As Concrete Aggregate, Sumire Nakamura, Yuichiro Kawabata
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Steelmaking slag has emerged as a promising material for low-carbon concrete, owing to its ability to sequester CO₂ through carbonation. However, CO2 sequestration by steelmaking slag and its utilisation is still far from practical application due to the high energy consumption and cost of the accelerated carbonation process. Anticipating that optimising the pre-natural carbonation during storage would reduce the energy and cost for accelerated carbonation, this study focused on the natural carbonation potential of steelmaking slag. In addition, the applicability of naturally carbonated steelmaking slag as aggregate for concrete was investigated. The long-term exposure experiment simulating outdoor storage demonstrated that …
The Effect Of Cracks On The Corrosion Distribution Along Rebar In A Chloride Contaminated Concrete, Shogo Kiriyama, Koichi Kobayashi
The Effect Of Cracks On The Corrosion Distribution Along Rebar In A Chloride Contaminated Concrete, Shogo Kiriyama, Koichi Kobayashi
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Cracks in concrete allows the ingress of corrosive factors such as chloride ions, water, and oxygen, and reduce the durability of the structure. Therefore, the generation and the development of the cracks must be controlled within the extent with which they do not affect the durability. However, the influences of crack on the steel bar corrosion are still poorly understood. Therefore, in order to investigate how the ingress of corrosion factors through cracks affects rebar corrosion and corrosion distribution, accelerated deterioration tests simulating a chloride rich environment were conducted in this study, using bending crack width and corrosion acceleration period …

Deterioration Prediction And Optimal Repair Timing Assessment For Rc Abutments In Tidal River Environments, Yuto Suzuki, Nobuhiro Chijiwa, Kazuhide Nakayama, Mitsuyasu Iwanami, Amadou Sakhir Syll
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Reinforced concrete (RC) abutments constructed in tidal rivers are periodically exposed to saltwater due to tidal fluctuations, which can lead to rebar corrosion and a decline in structural performance. To maintain such infrastructure more efficiently and cost-effectively, high-resolution simulations in both time and space can help predict the timing of performance degradation with greater accuracy, enabling optimal repair and reinforcement scheduling. Achieving higher accuracy in these simulations requires appropriate modelling of continuous environmental variations, such as tidal fluctuations, temperature, and humidity. This study focuses on RC abutments located in tidal zones and examines a modelling approach to represent environmental conditions …

Concrete creep is defined as deformation over time under a sustained load. When a structure is subjected to additional actions such as corrosion, damage to its components can occur, leading to a deterioration in performance. The structure then develops a long-term deformation known as secondary creep, which is greater than the creep deformation that occurs under sustained loads alone. The problem of secondary creep caused by corrosion of reinforcing steel, which is a common durability issue, is still not well understood. Corrosion-induced degradation, including partial loss of reinforcement, bond degradation and concrete cracking, exacerbates creep deformation by altering stress distribution …

This study investigates the simulation of moisture transport in concrete under compressive damage using the 3D RBSM Conduit model. The model combines stress-strain responses from concrete compression experiments with detailed crack data, providing a realistic representation of crack development under varying load conditions. By implementing both unlubricated and lubricated compression tests, different failure modes were observed, influencing penetration patterns. Simulations show that the distribution of cracks significantly accelerates moisture penetration within the concrete. Notably, uniformly distributed cracks, typical of lubricated tests, facilitate deeper and faster moisture transport compared to more localized cracks observed in unlubricated tests. This study validates the …

The alkali-silica reaction (ASR) significantly compromises the structural integrity of reinforced concrete members, underscoring the need for reliable computational models to assess ASR-affected infrastructure, especially in regions like Japan, where this issue is prevalent. Prestressed concrete (PC) girders develop anisotropic cracking under ASR-induced expansion, resulting in direction-dependent mechanical properties that can influence their global structural performance. In this study, the flexural behaviour of ASR-deteriorated PC girders with varying prestress and expansion levels is investigated numerically using the COM3 computational framework, which integrates constitutive laws for ASR-damaged concrete. The model’s ability to capture anisotropic mechanical behaviour is first evaluated by simulating …
