Does Cognitive Frame Affect Clinical Reasoning Among Medical Students? A Cross-Sectional Study, Xiao C. Zhang, Sara A. Belko, Andrew J Monick Oct 2025

Does Cognitive Frame Affect Clinical Reasoning Among Medical Students? A Cross-Sectional Study, Xiao C. Zhang, Sara A. Belko, Andrew J Monick

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Background Diagnostic errors affect patient safety and lead to high costs. Cognitive bias is a key source of diagnostic error, and the framing effect poses a particular clinical challenge. The extent to which individual factors affect susceptibility to the framing bias is unclear, and the role of expertise in particular is contested across the literature. Objectives This study investigated the effects of framing bias on diagnostic reasoning among medical students. We hypothesised that the effects attributable to framing would be mediated by the number of years of medical education completed. Methods Participants were randomly assigned on an automated basis with …

Streamflow Reconstruction For The Upper Indus Basin, Syeda Saria Bukhary, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The sustainability of water resources in Pakistan faces mounting challenges due to population growth, climate change, and declining groundwater reserves. The Indus River, vital for the country’s agriculture, energy, and economy, suffers from limited instrumental discharge records that do not capture long-term hydrologic variability or extreme flow events. This study addressed this gap by developing streamflow reconstructions for the Upper Indus Basin (UIB) using tree-ring chronologies (TRC) combined with sea surface temperature (SST) data—an approach not previously applied in this region—for four discharge stations: Partab, Daniyor, Besham Qila, and Kachora. Stepwise linear regression models using TRC and SST predictors explained …

The Ruling Relations Of Care: An Institutional Ethnography Of High-Risk Prenatal Care Experiences, Nicole L. Harris Oct 2025

The Ruling Relations Of Care: An Institutional Ethnography Of High-Risk Prenatal Care Experiences, Nicole L. Harris

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Disrespect during pregnancy, labor, and delivery is common in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that approximately one in five women overall, and over 30% of Black women, report being ignored, dismissed, or verbally mistreated during their care. Public health efforts have primarily focused on individual-level interventions to improve patient-provider communication or reduce provider bias; however, these strategies have been critiqued for their limited scope and effectiveness in shifting outcomes. Instead, researchers and advocates have called for an examination of the structures that shape clinical encounters, including policies, protocols, workflows, and organizational culture. This …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis is a rare, life-threatening vasculopathic syndrome most commonly seen in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and associated with high mortality. Vitamin K antagonists complicate management in patients with mechanical valves by potentially exacerbating vascular calcification while remaining essential for thromboprophylaxis.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman with ESRD on hemodialysis and a mechanical mitral valve on warfarin presented with severe abdominal pain and rapidly progressive necrotic ulcers. Despite broad-spectrum antibiotics and sodium thiosulfate, lesions worsened. Biopsies were nondiagnostic; however, the clinical phenotype was consistent with calciphylaxis. A multidisciplinary team transitioned anticoagulation from warfarin to subcutaneous unfractionated heparin (UFH) (333 U/kg …

Using Rattlesnake Venom To Model Complex Trait Evolution Across Ecological And Evolutionary Scales, Samuel R. Hirst Oct 2025

Using Rattlesnake Venom To Model Complex Trait Evolution Across Ecological And Evolutionary Scales, Samuel R. Hirst

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A central challenge in evolutionary biology is understanding how genetic variation leads to phenotypicdiversity, particularly for complex traits that strongly influence fitness. Traits form the substrate of natural selection, but it is genes, that are inherited across generations. To fully understand the evolutionary process, we must therefore connect the molecular basis of trait variation with the evolutionary outcomes of such traits.

For relatively simple traits, the genotype–phenotype relationship is well understood. Classic systems, such as coat color in beach mice or toxin resistance in garter snakes, have provided effective examples of how relatively few loci underlie conspicuous adaptive differences across …

Analyzing Flexible Fillers For Enhanced Protection In Post-Tensioned Bridges, Amanda Armudi Oct 2025

Analyzing Flexible Fillers For Enhanced Protection In Post-Tensioned Bridges, Amanda Armudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Florida’s extensive coastline, dense network of bridges, and highly aggressive environmental conditions make corrosion a critical concern for the durability of bridges infrastructure. To minimize corrosion in bridge structures that use unbonded post-tension tendons, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is using flexible fillers as an alternative material to cementitious grout. This study evaluated the performance of five flexible fillers under sodium chloride (NaCl) exposure using NaCl solutions at concentrations of 10mM, 100mM and 1M over an 8-month period. Visual inspections revealed that filler composition and pre-existing cracks and voids in the filler samples significantly influenced degradation behavior. The samples …

Existence, Uniqueness, Stability And Exact Expression Of Periodic Traveling Wave Solutions Of The Higher-Order Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, Nan Wang, Yuqian Zhou, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, the high-order cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation is considered. By overcoming the difficulties caused by its non-integrability, we completely explore the existence, uniqueness and stability of the limit cycle of the equation. It enables us to accurately give the explicit parameter representation of its periodic wave solution in a special form for the first time. These results provide not only a new idea of obtaining periodic solutions in complex nonlinear systems, but also the important theoretical support for understanding related wave phenomena.

Photopolymer Based Holographic Optical Elements For Shaping And Redirecting Led Light, Emma Branigan, Jorge Lasarte, Michael Murray, Izabela Naydenova, Kevin Murphy, Suzanne Martin

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

LED lighting has transformed city infrastructure with its efficiency and longevity, but its dispersed and highly diverging emission poses challenges like light pollution and artificial light at night (ALAN), which disrupts circadian rhythms in humans and animals. Volume or Bragg phase transmission holographic optical elements (HOEs) offer a low-cost solution to reducing LED light pollution in cities by efficiently shaping and redirecting light using thin, lightweight films and coatings. Unlike traditional optical components, HOEs are compact, lightweight, and highly customizable. This work explores novel fabrication techniques for efficient beam shaping, patterning, and redirection with a view to reducing light pollution, …

Rebound Bursting Selectively Enables Fast Dynamics In Dopamine Midbrain Neurons Projecting To The Dorsolateral Striatum, Strahinja Stojanovic, Christopher J. Knowlton, Richard Egger-Mackrodt, Johanna Mankel, Josef Shin, Stephan Lammel, Carmen C. Canavier, Jochen Roeper

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

Dopamine (DA) midbrain neurons are involved in a wide array of key brain functions including movement control and reward-based learning. They are also critical for major brain disorders such as Parkinson's disease or schizophrenia. DA neurons projecting to distinct striatal territories are diverse with regard to their molecular makeup and cellular physiology, which are likely to contribute to the observed differences in temporal DA dynamics. Among these regions, the dorsolateral striatum (DLS) displays the fastest DA dynamics, which might control the moment-to-moment vigor and variability of voluntary movements. However, the underlying mechanisms for these DLS-specific fast DA fluctuations are unresolved. …

During development, brain regions follow encoded growth trajectories. Compared to classical brain growth charts, high-definition growth charts could quantify regional volumetric growth and constituent cell types, improving our understanding of typical and pathological brain development. Here, we create high-resolution 3D atlases of the early postnatal mouse brain, using Allen CCFv3 anatomical labels, at postnatal days (P) 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, and determine the volumetric growth of different brain regions. We utilize 11 different cell type-specific transgenic animals to validate and refine anatomical labels. Moreover, we reveal region-specific density changes in γ-aminobutyric acid-producing (GABAergic) neurons, cortical layer-specific cell …

A Core Proposal For Budget Caring - Will The E.U. Adopt A Progressive Corporate Tax?, Domenico Imparato, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

On 16 July 2025, the European Commission unveiled its proposed EU budget for the 2028–2034 period, representing a nearly EUR two trillion fiscal commitment for the bloc’s taxpayers – both individual and corporate. As leaked by some media outlets in the days leading up to the official announcement, the EU budget would introduce a new mechanism known as the ‘Corporate Resource for Europe’ (CORE). In the Commission’s proposal, CORE is described as a ‘financial contribution’ from the corporate sector, intended to become part of the European Union’s system of own resources. In practical terms, however, it would function as a …

Advances in ultra‐intense laser technology have increased repetition rates and average power for chirped‐pulse laser systems, which offer a promising solution for many applications including energetic proton sources. An important challenge is the need to optimize and control the proton source by varying some of the many degrees of freedom inherent to the laser‐plasma interactions. Machine learning can play an important role in this task, as our work examines. Building on our earlier work in Desai et al. 2024, we generate a large ∼1.5 million data point synthetic data set for proton acceleration using a physics‐informed analytic model that we …

Formalism In Jewish Law, Chaim Saiman Oct 2025

Formalism In Jewish Law, Chaim Saiman

Faculty Publications

Scholars differ as to the degree to which Jewish law is formalistic. This chapter aims to make sense of the debate surrounding formalism in Jewish law by distinguishing between three types of legal formalism: classic formalism, modern formalism, and detail-following formalism. Viewed through the lens of modern formalism, Jewish law is likely less formalistic than commonly assumed as it is not primarily concerned with constraining decision makers. Nor is Jewish legal discourse typified by its unified conceptual schemas that proceed from abstract concepts to bottom-line decisions in the way that classical formalism proceeds. This chapter introduces an alternative framing termed …

Fastk Post-Transcriptional Regulators – A ‘Fast-Track’ In Mitochondrial Gene Expression, Justin Van Riper, Bridget J Corsaro, Monica C Pillon Oct 2025

Fastk Post-Transcriptional Regulators – A ‘Fast-Track’ In Mitochondrial Gene Expression, Justin Van Riper, Bridget J Corsaro, Monica C Pillon

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Fas-activated serine/threonine kinase (FASTK) proteins comprise one of the largest families of mitochondrial post-transcriptional regulators. Members are classified based on their conserved C-terminus, which shows homology with the PD-(D/E)XK superfamily of endoribonucleases. However, it is still uncertain which of these FASTK members are catalytic. The six human FASTK homologs rely on their RNA-binding activity to regulate distinct stages of mitochondrial gene expression, including early processing of nascent RNA, 3'-end messenger RNA (mRNA) maturation, ribosomal RNA (rRNA) modification, mRNA stability, and translation. Genetic and genomic studies have highlighted the crucial role of FASTK proteins in balancing the mitochondrial transcriptome and controlling …

Background: The rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), particularly among pediatric populations, requires identification of modifiable risk factors to control disease progression. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as potential contributors to liver damage; however, their role in MASLD remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop a translational framework integrating human and in vitro data to elucidate the effect of PFAS on MASLD development.

Methods: We measured PFAS plasma levels in the Teen-LABS cohort (n = 136), comprising adolescents with obesity (mean age = 16.8 years) undergoing bariatric surgery. Plasma samples were also analyzed using proteomic …
