Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: An Unrecognized Cause Of Nausea And Vomiting, Tiffany Smith, Anne Walsh, Christopher Forest
Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: An Unrecognized Cause Of Nausea And Vomiting, Tiffany Smith, Anne Walsh, Christopher Forest
Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Articles and Research
Cannabis has long been used for medical and recreational purposes because of its antiemetic, analgesic, and mood effects. Ironically, chronic use of cannabis can result in paradoxical effects, including a condition known as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Patients with this syndrome often are seen in the ED with cyclic vomiting, nausea, and epigastric pain. Although the definitive treatment of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is discontinuing the causative agent, medical management that includes rehydration is important to prevent complications. Common antiemetic medications are ineffective, but some studies have shown haloperidol and lorazepam to be effective in treating acute symptoms.

Health Information Exchanges In The Community Pharmacy Setting, Kenneth D. Sykes
Health Information Exchanges In The Community Pharmacy Setting, Kenneth D. Sykes
Applied Research Projects
The landscape of health care is shifting as new payment models and mandates for health information technology (HIT) rise. There is an unprecedented demand to meet our nation’s health care challenges of access, safety, quality, and cost. To meet these demands, the health care industry has recognized a team-based care model which can introduce the collaborative power through health information exchanges (HIEs). Providers like pharmacists, can detect and resolve medication errors, duplications, and omissions by using HIEs. HIEs give pharmacists the entire view of the patient from the bed-side of the hospital to the community pharmacy. However, the implementation of …

Obesity is a growing problem in the United States, though not a new one. It was estimated that over 72 million U.S. adults alone have a diagnosis of obesity. Among all preventable premature deaths, obesity ranks as the second leading cause. Contemporary classifications define obesity as a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30. Several common comorbidities are widely present in obese populations, particularly hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Among these chronic disease states, hypertension has been identified as the most common and earliest identifiable. The purpose of this study was to make inferences on the prescribing of …

Implementation Of Pharmacogenomics Into Electronic Health Record And Clinical Decision Support, Dharaben Naik
Applied Research Projects
The advent of electronic health records (EHR) and clinical decision support (CDS) has brought numerous changes in the healthcare field and has improved how patients receive care. The field of pharmacogenomics has made many breakthrough discoveries in the last few decades and these new advances have immensely reduced the cost of genetic testing. As advances have been made, researchers have discovered that individuals may respond to a medication differently due to genetic variants. There is a shift in the medical field from a one size fits all model to a personalized medicine model based on genetic information. Institutions have started …

Duodenal combined with the head of pancreatic injury (duodenal AAST grade 4 - 5) has incidence of 1 - 5% of all abdominal injury. Most (90%) of this injury is associated with other abdominal injuries. This type of injury is always difficult to diagnose because duodenum and head of the pancreas are located in retroperitoneal space, clinical presentation usually subtle and intraoperative finding may obscure. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen is a useful diagnostic tool. Debridement and primary repair with external drainage of the injured site is the mainstay treatment of this condition. An adjunct procedure can be combine …

Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases characterized by the growth of abnormal cells beyond their usual boundaries that can invade adjoining parts of the body and/or spread to other organs. There are risk factors that increase a person’s chance of developing cancer. Knowledge would be beneficial as a areminders that very likely the person is about to have an “appointment” or “date” with a forth-coming diseases. Thus, effective preventive and curative interventions would ideally be planned in favor of so-called precision medicine.

Background:
Most pregnancy hypertension estimates in less-developed countries are from cross-sectional hospital surveys and are considered overestimates. We estimated population-based rates by standardised methods in 27 intervention clusters of the Community-Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia (CLIP) cluster randomised trials.
Methods and findings:
CLIP-eligible pregnant women identified in their homes or local primary health centres (2013–2017). Included here are women who had delivered by trial end and received a visit from a community health worker trained to provide supplementary hypertension-oriented care, including standardised blood pressure (BP) measurement. Hypertension (BP ≥ 140/90 mm Hg) was defined as chronic (first detected at <20 weeks gestation) or gestational (≥20 weeks); pre-eclampsia was gestational hypertension plus proteinuria or a pre-eclampsia-defining complication. A multi-level regression model compared hypertension rates and types between countries (p < 0.05 …20>

While #hashtags gained momentum, liberating women to speak-out against sexual oppression, forging networks for the right to learn to drive, to bridge the gender pay gaps, and to close digital divide, the era of the posthuman, postdigital, and postgender seemed to be just around the corner. A key aspect of this apparent empowerment has been the visual scope of social media that allows women to show the world who they are and how they want to be seen. Among many feasible data sources, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are rich big data sources: a large amount of data is generated by various sensor nodes in large-scale networks. However, unlike typical wireless networks, WSNs have serious deficiencies in terms of data reliability and communication owing to the limited capabilities of the nodes. Moreover, a considerable amount of sensed data are of no interest, meaningless, and redundant when a large number of sensor nodes is …
