Sffa V. Harvard: How Affirmative Action Myths Mask White Bonus, Jonathan Feingold Apr 2019

Sffa V. Harvard: How Affirmative Action Myths Mask White Bonus, Jonathan Feingold

Faculty Scholarship

In the ongoing litigation of Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College, Harvard faces allegations that its once-heralded admissions process discriminates against Asian Americans. Public discourse has revealed a dominant narrative: affirmative action is viewed as the presumptive cause of Harvard’s alleged “Asian penalty.” Yet this narrative misrepresents the plaintiff’s own theory of discrimination. Rather than implicating affirmative action, the underlying allegations portray the phenomenon of “negative action” — that is, an admissions regime in which White applicants take the seats of their more qualified Asian-American counterparts. Nonetheless, we are witnessing a broad failure to see this case for what …

Equal Protection Design Defects, Jonathan Feingold Apr 2019

Equal Protection Design Defects, Jonathan Feingold

Faculty Scholarship

One can understand constitutional doctrine as a tool designed to effectuate the Constitution and its various provisions. Equal protection doctrine, in turn, comprises a set of Justice-made rules designed to realize the promise of equal protection under the law. The substance of that promise remains a topic of deep contestation. Nonetheless, more than forty years of constitutional jurisprudence have entrenched a vision of constitutional equality that privileges what I refer to herein as the “right to compete.” Simply put, the Supreme Court has repeatedly embraced the view that the Equal Protection Clause mandates the government to allocate public benefits — …

Exploring Turnover Among Nurse Managers, Directors, And Executives In Acute Care Hospitals, Deborah Hughes Warden

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The strength and quality of the nursing leader workforce is associated with staff nurse retention and patient outcomes. While leadership turnover is not always negative, there is still uncertainty, loss of program continuity, power shifts within an organization, and significant expense for the organization in recruiting and integrating a new leader.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore intent to leave and turnover experiences of acute care nurse managers, directors, and executives.

Methods: For this nationwide survey, recruitment was done via snowball sampling through state hospital associations and professional organizations across the US with a resulting sample …

Helping South Carolina’S Children Thrive: Promoting Protective Factors To Prevent The Long-Term Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Through The Development Of Evidence-Based Public Health Policies, Aditi Srivastav Apr 2019

Helping South Carolina’S Children Thrive: Promoting Protective Factors To Prevent The Long-Term Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Through The Development Of Evidence-Based Public Health Policies, Aditi Srivastav

Theses and Dissertations

This study considered Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to be an underlying cause of engagement in risk behaviors and that the implementation of protective factors, or positive relationships and environments, can reduce long-term implications of ACEs. First, this study examined the empirical relationship between safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs), exposure to ACEs, and risk behaviors using a population-level health survey in South Carolina. The results of this research, which demonstrate that SSNRs moderate the relationship between ACEs and risk behaviors, provide innovative evidence for the role of protective factors in reducing exposure to ACEs and risk behavior engagement. Next, this …

An Anatomical Basis Of The Differential Cholinergic Modulation Of Valence-Specific Pyramidal Neurons In The Basolateral Amygdala, Nguyen Vu Apr 2019

An Anatomical Basis Of The Differential Cholinergic Modulation Of Valence-Specific Pyramidal Neurons In The Basolateral Amygdala, Nguyen Vu

Theses and Dissertations

Emotion is a crucial component of the decision-making process. The amygdala, known as the “orchestrator” of the emotion circuit, associates emotional valence with incoming sensory stimuli and thus contributes to decision- making. Within the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA), spatially segregated and genetically distinct pyramidal neurons (PNs) have been identified based on their correspondence to distinct behavioral stimuli. These PNs project to several brain regions mediating different aspects of the emotional spectrum.

For example, BLA PNs projecting to prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) cortex are involved in fear acquisition and fear extinction, respectively. However, the mechanism by which these …

Beyond The Limits Of Sight, Catherine Ntube Apr 2019

Beyond The Limits Of Sight, Catherine Ntube

Theses and Dissertations

Beyond the Limits of Sight is a collection of poems exploring black diasporic identity through and beyond the silences that come to surround violence. In this experimental collection, black bars representing selective silence appear throughout the work, in protest of the compulsory release of licensing rights to the university and its corporate partners as a degree requirement, and in insistence that the poet be able to decide on what terms and via which platforms their voice enters the public sphere.

Continuous Tow Path Generation For Constant And Variable Stiffness Composite Laminates On Single And Double Curved Surfaces, Caleb R. Pupo Apr 2019

Continuous Tow Path Generation For Constant And Variable Stiffness Composite Laminates On Single And Double Curved Surfaces, Caleb R. Pupo

Theses and Dissertations

A novel approach for the generation of steered tow paths on curved shell surfaces is presented. The approach is used to translate optimal theoretical analysis expressed from ply to ply as fiber angle distributions for steered laminates into discrete tow paths on planar, single and double curved surfaces. By adapting the multi mesh approach earlier developed by van Tooren and Elham [1–3] to the new tow path generation code. Two meshes are utilized, a coarse mesh which is generated during the optimization and contains the optimal fiber angle distributions, and a denser mesh obtained from tessellating the surface to better …

Kinetically Controlled Block Polymer Micelles: Cavitation Induced Exchange And Templates For Nanomaterials, Kayla Alice Lantz Apr 2019

Kinetically Controlled Block Polymer Micelles: Cavitation Induced Exchange And Templates For Nanomaterials, Kayla Alice Lantz

Theses and Dissertations

Kinetically trapped micelles are emerging as a novel platform for a wide range of applications including drug delivery, nanoreactors, and templates for porous nanomaterials. Kinetic control affords decoupling of micelle size from subsequent applications. However, micelle homogenization and size tuning are inherently difficult due to the high barrier toward micelle chain exchange processes. These challenges can be resolved with the use of sonication, which enables switchable exchange where cavitation leads to chain exchange and cessation returns micelles to kinetic entrapment. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements were used to quantify exchange during cavitation induced exchange (CIE). The extent of exchange was …

Supervision Behaviors Of Board-Certified Behavior Analysts With Precertification Candidates, Zahra Hajiaghamohseni Apr 2019

Supervision Behaviors Of Board-Certified Behavior Analysts With Precertification Candidates, Zahra Hajiaghamohseni

Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid increase in the rate of board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs), there has been a need to evaluate the state of precertification supervision practices. There is no comprehensive information available on the supervision practices of BCBA/BCBAs used with precertification candidate supervisors. Current recommended supervision practices are derived from the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code (PECC) 5.0 Behavior Analyst as a Supervisor. Leaders in the field have attempted to further define individual behaviors that support compliance with 5.0 Behavior Analyst as a Supervisor (LeBlanc, Heinicke, & Baker, 2012; LeBlanc & Luiselli, 2016; Sellers, Alai-Rosales, & MacDonald, 2016, 2016; …

For The Common Man: An Analysis Of The United States Space And Rocket Center, Patrice R. Green Apr 2019

For The Common Man: An Analysis Of The United States Space And Rocket Center, Patrice R. Green

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Space and Rocket Center functions as a case study on the rise of popular science in the 20th century America. The museum cultivated a national cultural identity formed during the International Space Race and fostered a growing narrative of a country focused on progress defined by advancements in science and technology rather than social cohesion. This paper outlines the Space and Rocket Center’s establishment, its interpretation of America’s space programs, and its role as a vessel for domesticated science. It also acknowledges the intersectional gaps in museum interpretation and discusses how the museum and its programs have …

Examining The Influence Of Technoference On Sexual Satisfaction And Relationship Satisfaction Using Actor-Partner Interdependence Modeling Among Young Adult Couples, Christopher J. Hipp Apr 2019

Examining The Influence Of Technoference On Sexual Satisfaction And Relationship Satisfaction Using Actor-Partner Interdependence Modeling Among Young Adult Couples, Christopher J. Hipp

Theses and Dissertations

Young adult couples experience differing levels of relationship and sexual satisfaction throughout the development and duration of their relationship. The levels of relationship and sexual satisfaction depend on factors associated with expectations by the individual members of what constitutes acceptable rewards and costs for the continuance of the relationship. Technology use within a relationship is a relatively new concept in research shown to produce potential rewards and costs that influence relationship development and/or sustainment; however, the results of technology use in romantic relationships remains an understudied area. Even less is known about the effects of technoference on young adult couples’ …

Russian Roots In Southern Soil, James Preston Edge Apr 2019

Russian Roots In Southern Soil, James Preston Edge

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the profound influence that 19th-century Russian authors had on 20th-century Southern writers. Recent analyses of the American South have looked to the fluid nature of this region’s borders, often spreading into the Caribbean, South America, and American West, but there has not yet been any book- length study of the ways in which several Russian literary masters, including Ivan Turgenev, Anton Chekhov, and Fyodor Dostoevsky, influenced Southern authors, particularly Ernest Gaines, Eudora Welty, and Richard Wright. In particular, these Southern authors, in interviews and essays, have repeatedly extolled these Russian figures for their elevation of communal folklore, …

Moral Ambiguity In The Works Of Cormac Mccarthy, Christina Xan Apr 2019

Moral Ambiguity In The Works Of Cormac Mccarthy, Christina Xan

Theses and Dissertations

Cormac McCarthy’s works have presented a question since he first published The Orchard Keeper in 1965 – what are his characters’ motivations? McCarthy’s novels are known for showing little to no interiority of his characters. This choice to depict action and not thought makes it nearly impossible to discern the reasoning behind the actions of the characters. Not being able to definitively know the motivations of the characters in his novels makes it hard to argue that his characters are simply “good” or “bad,” and morality becomes hard to discern. Although actions such as murder appear immoral without having an …

The Games Behind The Scenes: Newspaper Framing Of Female African American Olympic Athletes, Martin Reece Funderburk Apr 2019

The Games Behind The Scenes: Newspaper Framing Of Female African American Olympic Athletes, Martin Reece Funderburk

Theses and Dissertations

Competing in and representing their country in the Olympic games is considered one of the greatest achievements for an athlete. From heroes such as Michael Jordan and the “Dream Team,” to Michael Phelps setting world record after record in the pool, Olympians are remembered as legends to those watching at home. How their amazing achievements at these Olympic games have been framed by the media though is another story. Newspapers have facilitated a platform for a qualitative content analysis on the framing of three female African American Olympic gold medalists that showed statistical significance in terms of the amount of …

Classification Of Non-Singular Cubic Surfaces Up To E-Invariants, Mohammed Alabbood Apr 2019

In this thesis, we use the Clebsch map to construct cubic surfaces with twenty-seven lines in PG(3, q) from 6 points in general position in PG(2, q) for q = 17, 19, 23, 29, 31. We classify the cubic surfaces with twenty-seven lines in three dimensions (up to e- invariants) by introducing computational and geometrical procedures for the classi- fication. All elliptic and hyperbolic lines on a non-singular cubic surface in PG(3, q) for q = 17, 19, 23, 29 …

Bffs, Donavon St.Andre Apr 2019

Bffs, Donavon St.Andre

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this assignment was to create, perform and evaluate my own show. Over the course of approximately twelve months, many ideas were brought to the table. None of these ideas were censored or frowned upon; each was very genuine and had the potential to become the final product presented. Throughout the process, I dove deeper into my own thoughts, beliefs and feelings as I attempted to decide and design my performance. Once a commitment was made, I applied my fears, troubles and insecurities on paper to ten adolescent students in a classroom setting. Drafting the script took little …

Investigating The Construct Validity Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo In Children, Kristin L. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

The term Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) refers to attention difficulties that are characterized by a constellation of symptoms ranging from excessive daydreaming to drowsiness, sluggishness, and lethargy. Although several SCT scales have been developed in recent years, researchers have yet to agree upon an ideal set of symptoms. In addition, it remains unclear whether SCT consists of a single dimension or if it is a multidimensional construct. The first aim of this study was to extend research related to SCT symptomatology and measurement by conducting a comprehensive investigation of SCT symptoms. A 25-item scale was developed to include each of …

Divine Absence, Divine Presence: The Theological Arguments Of Elizabeth Singer Rowe’S The History Of Joseph, Laura Macgowan Apr 2019

Divine Absence, Divine Presence: The Theological Arguments Of Elizabeth Singer Rowe’S The History Of Joseph, Laura Macgowan

Theses and Dissertations

Elizabeth Singer Rowe’s Biblical epic The History of Joseph (1736), which dramatizes the events of Genesis 37-45, stands out in her oeuvre not only generically—it is her only long narrative poem—but because of how rarely God appears as an intervening agent or subject of narrative attention. Rather than highlight God’s splendor by imbuing Scripture with poetic embellishment, as is her wont, Rowe’s language downplays God’s hand in a famously Providential story (Genesis 50.20). While God shows up most often as an entity to beseech or a cultural token to reference, pagan deities govern the plot’s action; Rowe relishes in …

Learning Church: Catechisms And Lay Participation In Early New England Congregationalism, Roberto O. Flores De Apodaca Apr 2019

Learning Church: Catechisms And Lay Participation In Early New England Congregationalism, Roberto O. Flores De Apodaca

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes catechisms and catechizing in New England religious culture from 1628-1662. These question and answer documents were intended for comprehensive religious instruction of both children and adults, and thus provide a direct window into the worldview of New England laity. In the hands of ordinary men and women, catechisms became a profound tool of religious and ecclesiastical empowerment. This thesis argues that catechisms held an indispensable role in equipping early New England men and women to participate in the government and rituals of their nascent Congregational churches. Ministers wrote catechisms to equip laity for their responsibilities of structuring …

“Power In Repose”: Sleep And Agency In American Literature, 1875-1916, Hannah Leigh Huber Apr 2019

“Power In Repose”: Sleep And Agency In American Literature, 1875-1916, Hannah Leigh Huber

Theses and Dissertations

“Power in Repose” argues that American literature provided its own response to the cult of wakefulness that emerged at the turn of the twentieth century. Narratives by authors Henry James, Charles Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman emerged from a time in which conceptions of rest were reshaped by the coalescence of America’s Protestant work ethic and industrial advancement. By complicating the separation of public and private space, my chosen texts present characters exhausted by the permeation of the supposedly impervious aspects of modernity, such as artificial light, traffic commotion, and round-the-clock labor and social activity. Marginalized figures are …

A New Characterization Of V-Posets, Peter Gartland Apr 2019

A New Characterization Of V-Posets, Peter Gartland

Theses and Dissertations

In 2016, Hasebe and Tsujie gave a recursive characterization of the set of induced N -free and bowtie-free posets; Misanantenaina and Wagner studied these orders fur- ther, naming them “V-posets”. Here we offer a new characterization of V-posets by introducing a property we refer to as autonomy. A poset P is said to be autonomous if there exists a directed acyclic graph D (with adjacency matrix U ) whose transitive closure is P, with the property that any total ordering of the vertices of D so that Gaussian elimination of UT U proceeds without row swaps is a …

A Development Of Transfer Entropy In Continuous-Time, Christopher David Edgar Apr 2019

A Development Of Transfer Entropy In Continuous-Time, Christopher David Edgar

Theses and Dissertations

The quantification of causal relationships between time series data is a fundamen- tal problem in fields including neuroscience, social networking, finance, and machine learning. Amongst the various means of measuring such relationships, information- theoretic approaches are a rapidly developing area in concert with other methods. One such approach is to make use of the notion of transfer entropy (TE). Broadly speaking, TE is an information-theoretic measure of information transfer between two stochastic processes. Schreiber’s 2001 definition of TE characterizes information transfer as an informational divergence between conditional probability mass func- tions. The original definition is native to discrete-time stochastic processes …
