This paper proposes a novel framework for the global optimization of a continuous function in a bounded rectangular domain. Specifically, we show that: (1) global optimization is equivalent to optimal strategy formation in a two-armed decision problem with known distributions, based on the Strategic Law of Large Numbers we establish; and (2) a sign-based strategy based on the solution of a parabolic PDE is asymptotically optimal. This study examines the trends, challenges, and opportunities in the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) within mathematics education. Employing a descriptive bibliometric approach, this research analyzed 1.800 publications indexed in Dimensions.ai from 2020 to 2025 using VOSviewer software to visualize and interpret keyword co-occurrence, citation patterns, and research networks. The results indicate a substantial growth in MOOC related mathematics studies from 2020 to 2022, followed by stabilization during 2023 2025, signaling the transition of MOOCs from emergency digital instruction toward a more structured and sustainable learning ecosystem. The research employed the Lee and Owens (2004) model of instructional design, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The resulting product is a mobile learning application accessible via smartphones, featuring a user-friendly interface, multimedia content, learning videos, interactive simulations, and self-assessment quizzes. Trained immunity is a long-term functional reprogramming of innate cells that allows for the formation of immune memory akin to adaptive responses, but with a more rapid nonspecific response. We recently identified an anti-inflammatory trained immunity response, termed trained tolerogenic immunity (TTI), induced by low virulence Candida dubliniensis, that protects against acute lethal polymicrobial sepsis via myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Trained immunity and MDSCs arise following hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) expansion in the bone marrow. Here, we show that C. dubliniensis induces inoculum-dependent protection and HSPC expansion, whereas depletion of HSPCs following C. dubliniensis immunization abrogates protection. We …

Ungrading is a pedagogical approach that, in some iterations, emphasizes formative feedback and student self-assessment over traditional point-based grading. While increasingly popular in the humanities and social sciences, ungrading remains uncommon in STEM courses, particularly those that are content-intensive. This article presents a structured example of ungrading implemented in an upper-division ecosystem ecology course through a 7-week independent research project. Students used public or previously collected ecological data to investigate a scientific question, culminating in a short-format, manuscript-style research paper and a 10 min oral presentation. Redox-active organic matter (RAOM) reduction is an important control on methane production in northern peatlands, but it is unclear how global climate change will affect RAOM reduction. We investigated the effects of water-table levels on RAOM reduction by leveraging a long-term water-table manipulation experiment in an Alaskan fen, which includes Lowered and Raised treatment plots relative to a Control. Common substrate peat was incubated in each plot during one summer of experimental manipulation and another summer of site-wide flooding. Choromytilus chorus virtually vanished from most Peruvian archaeological sites about 1000 BC. This species’ disappearance is significant because Choromytilus chorus is one of the most recognizable mollusks in the archaeological remains of coastal Peru because of its large size and rich purple color. In this study we investigate the choro mussel, which was a highly valued food source, a raw material for fishhooks and other fishing gear, and a special ritual item in prehistoric times. Background: Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti and Ae. (Stegomyia) albopictus mosquitoes are major vectors of diseases including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The excessive use of chemical insecticides has caused resistance in mosquito populations, along with negative environmental impacts and harm to non-target organisms. In this regard, mosquito control strategies, such as passive mass trapping interventions with autocidal gravid ovitraps (AGO) offer a promising alternative. Here we report the results of a pilot study evaluating a passive mass trapping treatment using AGOs against Ae. aegypti in the city of Harlingen, Texas, USA, during the peak mosquito season.

Squirrel species in Alaska generally lack thorough conservation management plans, while all species are actively hunted with no bag limits, closed seasons, or any other restrictions, and the current ‘management’ is based on ambiguous hand-drawn distribution maps. This indicates a laissez-faire approach to Alaskan squirrel conservation management. Aims. Here, we attempt to improve this current situation by assessing the effectiveness of ensemble machine-learning prediction models as proposed add-ons to the traditional components of conservation management plans toward a more state-of-the-art approach to species conservation. This study proposes an integrated framework for sustainable manufacturing that jointly optimizes production scheduling, maintenance planning, and carbon-conscious energy management. A Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model is developed to minimize makespan while maintaining machine reliability and ensuring compliance with greenhouse gas (GHG) emission limits. The model incorporates speed scaling as a decision variable, capturing the trade-off between processing time, energy consumption, and machine degradation. Preventive maintenance (PM) and minimal repair (MR) strategies are explicitly modeled using a Weibull-based failure distribution, and a carbon cap constraint is introduced to bound total emissions. BACKGROUND: Recent randomized controlled trials have established chemoimmunotherapy as the standard of care for patients with advanced biliary cancers with a median overall survival (OS) of about thirteen months. No data exist to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of liver-directed radiotherapy (RT) for extrahepatic and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) in the era of chemoimmunotherapy. The purpose of this study is to report our early experience treating patients with CCA using RT and chemoimmunotherapy.

Background: Lung and Bronchus cancer is the most fatal type of cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, there were more than 127,000 deaths from lung cancer in 2023. Lung cancer care cost 23.8 billion dollars in 2020. In Texas, only 22.8% of lung cancer patients survived 5 years or more past diagnosis based on 2012-2018 data.

This short contribution presents two recently discovered inscriptions from Central Java that are among the oldest documents in the Old Javanese language, namely a dated stone from Kesongo (685 Śaka/743 CE) and the Disunuh inscription (709 Śaka/787 CE). These two artefacts constitute new evidence that Old Javanese had become a written language in this part of Java already in the eighth century CE. This article provides a revised critical edition and annotated translation of the Kārakasaṁgraha, a Sanskrit grammatical treatise as it has been preserved in Balinese manuscripts. The work is a synthesis of Indian grammatical traditions, notably including aspects of both Pāṇinian and Kātantra systems, which was probably recomposed in the premodern Indonesian archipelago. While its Sanskrit matrix is witness to local adaptation, the interspersed Old Javanese commentaries also show a striking reframing of grammatical discourse in ritual and cosmological idioms.
