Investigating The Construct Validity Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo In Children, Kristin L. Roberts Apr 2019

Investigating The Construct Validity Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo In Children, Kristin L. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

The term Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) refers to attention difficulties that are characterized by a constellation of symptoms ranging from excessive daydreaming to drowsiness, sluggishness, and lethargy. Although several SCT scales have been developed in recent years, researchers have yet to agree upon an ideal set of symptoms. In addition, it remains unclear whether SCT consists of a single dimension or if it is a multidimensional construct. The first aim of this study was to extend research related to SCT symptomatology and measurement by conducting a comprehensive investigation of SCT symptoms. A 25-item scale was developed to include each of …

A Model Of Impression Formation In Recruitment, Jonathan Levi Hendricks Apr 2019

A Model Of Impression Formation In Recruitment, Jonathan Levi Hendricks

Theses and Dissertations

Applicant impressions of organizations are a critical antecedent to applicant decisions within the recruitment process. Recruitment research has examined how applicant perceptions are influenced by organization-specific information within a given industry. However, current recruitment models fail to describe the process of impression formation during recruitment, which inhibits understanding of the recruitment process. Specifically, only limited research has considered how applicants integrate context- related associations (such as perceptions about an industry) with recruitment materials in forming initial perceptions about the organization. Over the course of two experimental studies, I integrate social cognitive research on impression formation into recruitment models to develop …

Effectiveness Of A Brand’S Paid, Owned, And Earned Media In A Social Media Environment, Anan Wan

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explored how a brand’s paid, owned, and earned media (POEM) influence and engage its audience in the social media environment where consumer engagement is stressed. This dissertation used an online experiment (N = 250) to explore the effectiveness of applying earned media within an advertising context, The findings indicated that positive earned media was more effective on people’s consumer engagement intention and download intention than paid media, but it did not work on perceived credibility of the post or product attitude. Positive earned media was found to be less credible than owned media. Among all the five …

Surface Science And Engineering Of Nano-Structured Cathodes For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yeting Wen Apr 2019

Surface Science And Engineering Of Nano-Structured Cathodes For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yeting Wen

Theses and Dissertations

The bulk-to-surface Sr-segregation can seriously compromise the stability of oxygen electrocatalysis in Sr-doped perovskite oxides such as La1-xSrxCoO3-δ and La1-xSrxCo1- yFeyO3-δ and limit their practical applications as cathode materials in solid oxide fuel cells. Although such chemical instability has been actively studied in recent years, fundamental understanding of Sr-segregation process vs temperature and time, particularly under real-world conditions, as well as the suppression method, are still needed. This PhD dissertation aims to acquire fundamental knowledge of Sr-segregation process under practical conditions in solid oxide fuel cells and develop suppression method to ensure the long-term stability through surface modifications.

Nanoparticles With Tunable Fluorophobic Effect Towards Multimodal Coassembly With Block Copolymers, Zachary Michael Marsh

Theses and Dissertations

Nanomaterials are often fabricated using block polymers to direct the placement of nanoparticles via selective intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding. Fluorophobic interactions have emerged as a promising handle to control nanoparticle placement independently from typical hydrophilic approaches. A series of nanoparticles with tunable fluorophobicity were prepared to elucidate the key parameters for harnessing fluorophobic interactions in this context. Mixed ligand fluorinated nanoparticles (ML-FNPs) where prepared to examine the competing roles of each ligand towards fluorophobicity and solubility. The ML-FNP intermolecular interactions were first studied using a custom-made Quartz Crystalline Microbalance (QCM) based technique. The ML-FNPs were then examined for …

The Toccatas Of Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger’S Libro Primo D’Intavolatura Di Lauto: Analysis, Performance Practice, And Transcription For Modern Classical Guitar, Brett Edwin Floyd

Theses and Dissertations

Johannes Kapsberger (1580-1651) was an Italian composer of the early Baroque era. Known for his compositions for the lute, and chitarrone, Kapsberger was a talented composer who worked for great patrons like Francesco Barberini and Pope Urban VIII. Kapsberger published his only surviving lute works in 1611, which contained eight lute toccatas, twelve galliards and twelve courantes. Music produced for the lute during the renaissance and baroque eras are products of their time. Published lute music was written in tablature and relied heavily on the performance practices of its day. Today, trained lutenists have the skills and knowledge needed to …

The Influence Of Publicly-Traded Reits And Market-Based Inflation Expectations On Daily-Priced Private Commercial Real Estate Returns, Tiffany Burns Gherlone

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

Investors requiring daily Net Asset Values (NAV) represent a large and growing source of capital for the private institutional real estate asset class. Defined contribution and other daily-valued vehicles are increasing their investments into private, direct commercial real estate through funds that estimate changes to income and values in order to mark a daily NAV. Utilizing nine years of daily data from the NCREIF Fund Index – Daily Priced, we optimize a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model with generalized error distribution parameterization (GARCH-GED) to better understand the influence of publicly-traded real estate securities and changes in market-implied inflation expectations on …

Still Missing Dark Matter: Kcwi High-Resolution Stellar Kinematics Of Ngc1052-Df2, Shany Danieli, Pieter Van Dokkum, Charlie Conroy, Roberto Abraham, Aaron Romanowsky

Faculty Publications

The velocity dispersion of the ultra diffuse galaxy NGC1052-DF2 was found to be σgc = 7.8 +5.2/-2.2 km s−1, much lower than expected from the stellar mass–halo mass relation and nearly identical to the expected value from the stellar mass alone. This result was based on the radial velocities of 10 luminous globular clusters that were assumed to be associated with the galaxy. A more precise measurement is possible from high-resolution spectroscopy of the diffuse stellar light. Here we present an integrated spectrum of the diffuse light of NGC1052-DF2 obtained with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), with an instrumental …

Faculty Publications

Ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) are a population of extended galaxies but with relatively low luminosities. The origin of these objects remains unclear, largely due to the observational challenges of the low surface brightness Universe. We present here a detailed stellar population analysis of a relatively isolated UDG, DGSAT I, based on spectroscopic data from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager integral field unit. The star formation history of DGSAT I seems to be extended, with a mean luminosity-weighted age of ∼3 Gyr, in agreement with previous photometric studies. However, we find a very high [Mg/Fe] abundance ratio, which is extreme even in …

Does Crime Pay? Cartel Penalties And Profits, John M. Connor, Robert H. Lande Apr 2019

Does Crime Pay? Cartel Penalties And Profits, John M. Connor, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

This article seeks to answer a fundamental antitrust question: does crime pay? Do the current overall levels of U.S. cartel sanctions adequately discourage firms from engaging in illegal collusion? Seven years ago our research showed that the unfortunate answer was clearly that, yes, criminal collusion usually is profitable! The expected costs (in terms of criminal fines and prison time, civil damages, etc.) was significantly less than expected gains to the price fixers. Sadly, the most recent data re-affirm this conclusion.

The great majority of companies participating in illegal cartels make a profit even after they pay all the penalties. The …

Arts-Based Assessments And Projective Tests: An Interpretation Of Self, Hannah Bailey, Noelle M. Giacona, Angel Yang

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to understand the relationship between arts-based assessments and perception of self through exploration of participants’ interpretations of their own animal drawings. Subjects’ experiences with projective tests, personality assessments and tools, and art assessments were also examined for contextual understanding and comparison. To conduct this mixed methods pilot study, a survey was administered to alumni of the Loyola Marymount University Marital and Family Therapy Department. The findings suggest evidence of self- projection within arts-based assessment interpretation by way of metaphor, and highlight the potential for interpretation bias in therapeutic assessment, both in administration and perception. This pilot study …

Riverine Calcium End-Members Improve Coastal Saturation State Calculations And Reveal Regionally Variable Calcification Potential, Sean Thomas Beckwith, Robert H. Byrne, Pamela Hallock Apr 2019

Riverine Calcium End-Members Improve Coastal Saturation State Calculations And Reveal Regionally Variable Calcification Potential, Sean Thomas Beckwith, Robert H. Byrne, Pamela Hallock

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Carbonate-rich groundwater discharged from springs, seeps, and spring-fed rivers on carbonate platforms creates environments of potential refuge for calcifying organisms in coastal waters by supplying higher [Ca2+] and [CO32-] along with typically lower nutrient concentrations. The benefits associated with carbonate terrains are maximized in the presence of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), especially seagrasses. To improve the accuracy of carbonate saturation state (Ω) determinations, calculated values of [CO32-] and Ksp∗ were paired with [Ca2+] values determined using a model that incorporates directly measured riverine calcium end-members (model A). This model …

The Role Of Social Well-Being In Sustainability, Rachel Abele Apr 2019

The Role Of Social Well-Being In Sustainability, Rachel Abele

Honors Thesis

The concept of sustainability combines environmental, social, and economic factors to ensure the survival and prosperity of future generations for the Earth. People most often associate only environmental issues with sustainability rather than economic issues or social equity movements. The purpose of this thesis was to determine if people associated social equity movements with sustainability. This is important because social equity movements move towards creating an overall greater social well-being of individuals which is necessary for prosperity of the future; a key concept in sustainability. To test this, I interviewed twelve individuals: three faculty with expertise in sustainability, three faculty …

The Inconfidêntes – A Play Inspired By The Inconfidência Mineira, Issac Otterman

Honors Thesis

Within this creative thesis is the new play written by Isaac Otterman, The Inconfidêntes, and the process that went into the creation of the work as well as the artist’s intent with the new work. The interest for this work came from my research into Brazilian histories and lack of knowledge that Americans have about other cultures’ histories. The Inconfidêntes is a play inspired by the Inconfidência Mineira, a failed revolutionary attempt to overthrow the Portuguese rule over Brazil in Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1789. Following the famed martyr Joaquim José da Silva Xavier known as Tiradentes, the play explores …
