These bold, eye-catching informational posters, produced and disseminated in and outside of the Library, promote learning through innovative designs created by students for students.

The United States' Pursuit Of Regime Change In Venezuela, Robin Sawka Apr 2019

The United States' Pursuit Of Regime Change In Venezuela, Robin Sawka

Paideia

Since its first mass protest in 2016, Venezuela has been in a state of crisis, facing public protest, inflation rates, and diminishing access to basic necessities. Many of these issues can be tied to the decline of Venezuela’s once successful oil industry, which had created an economic-bubble until recent years. This paper uncovers the historical context of the issues faced by Venezuela’s oil industry and analyzes the role the United States has played in promoting its own influence within it. Furthermore, this paper examines the specific methods the United States has used to assert this influence and the motives and …

Proteogenomic Mapping Of Gossypium Mustelinum Leaf, Heather Leanne White Apr 2019

Proteogenomic Mapping Of Gossypium Mustelinum Leaf, Heather Leanne White

Honors Theses

Cotton, having a production value of $7.2 billion in 2017, is one of the most valuable crops in the United States. While not a fiber-producing species, the wild Brazilian tetraploid Gossypium mustelinum may produce a hybrid with exceptionally long fibers if crossed with G. hirsutum, one of the most commonly cultivated species. For the first time, presented here is the global proteome profile of the G. mustelinum leaf which may be used as a reference in future studies. Proteins were extracted from three individual G. mustelinum plants. To maximize protein coverage, two sample preparation techniques were utilized: size-based fractionation by …

The Curious Case Of Filipino Micro-Entrepreneurs’ Financial Sophistication And The Triple Bottom Line, Sheevun Di O. Guliman, Arnel Onesimo O. Uy Apr 2019

The Curious Case Of Filipino Micro-Entrepreneurs’ Financial Sophistication And The Triple Bottom Line, Sheevun Di O. Guliman, Arnel Onesimo O. Uy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study examines the effects of the three proposed financial sophistication dimensions, that is, (1) knowledge; (2) behavior, and (3) decision-making style, on the triple bottom line (TBL) framework. Based on a sample of 384 micro-entrepreneurs across the National Capital Region (NCR) in the Philippines, results of PLS-SEM showed that the financial decision-making style had a positive effect on all areas of the TBL. Financial behavior showed to have positive effects on the economic and environmental aspects while financial knowledge only had a positive effect on the economic bottom line. Lastly, the relationship between female micro-entrepreneurs’ financial decision-making style and …

The Rise Of The Manileña Entrepreneur: Her Story In Periodicals From 1898–1938, Katherine G. Lacson Apr 2019

The Rise Of The Manileña Entrepreneur: Her Story In Periodicals From 1898–1938, Katherine G. Lacson

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The separate spheres ideology implicitly denied the economic value of many female activities and therefore attributing the economic world to male-centered activities. Utilizing the power of the periodical as a source to uncover the story and images of women, this article describes the Manileña entrepreneur as she competed in the world of business from 1898 to 1938. As compared to representations of businessmen, which were ubiquitous, this study also shows that there was not one specific iconographic image or idea of a woman entrepreneur. What was available were new and varied images due to the diverse backgrounds and enterprises that …

Innovation Practices Of Entrepinays From Camarines Sur, Ma.Cresilda M. Caning, Divina M. Edralin Apr 2019

Innovation Practices Of Entrepinays From Camarines Sur, Ma.Cresilda M. Caning, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Innovation as an output and as a process is the result of new combinations created by the entrepreneur (Schumpeter, 1934). In this exploratory study, we investigated the case of four women entrepreneurs from Camarines Sur to determine their innovation strategies and their implication to their business performance. We compared the degree by which these Entrepinays implement innovation practices based on the OSLO Innovation Measurement Framework. This framework specifies four types of innovation, namely: product, process, marketing, and organizational innovation. Based on the content analysis of our data gathered from the one-on-one interview, our results revealed that the Bicolana entrepreneurs implemented …

Lawyers In Government Service—A Foreword, Bruce A. Green Apr 2019

Lawyers In Government Service—A Foreword, Bruce A. Green

Fordham Law Review

Lawyers in government serve in many different roles, both representational and nonrepresentational. Some represent the federal, state, or local government, a particular governmental entity (such as a department of consumer affairs) or agency (such as the NLRB), or public officials in their official capacity. These lawyers render a range of legal services and act as litigators, negotiators, drafters, and counselors. Other lawyers in government serve in nonrepresentative capacities; for example, as elected or appointed officials or as their aides. Scholarship on government lawyers addresses these varied roles and functions from varied perspectives, drawing on different bodies of law and legal …

Law And Nonlegal Norms In Government Lawyers' Ethics: Discretion Meets Legitimacy, W. Bradley Wendel Apr 2019

Law And Nonlegal Norms In Government Lawyers' Ethics: Discretion Meets Legitimacy, W. Bradley Wendel

Fordham Law Review

This Essay is about the role of unwritten norms in the ethical decisionmaking of government lawyers. Because the ethical obligations of lawyers, including government lawyers, are closely tied to the legal rights and obligations of clients, this analysis necessarily depends on understanding the relationship between written law and unwritten norms. As we all know, however, written law leaves gaps, ambiguities, and zones of unregulated discretion. Prosecutors in the United States, for example, have virtually unreviewable discretion to decide who to investigate and charge, what charges to bring, and whether to offer immunity in exchange for cooperation. No one has a …

Fosta: A Hostile Law With A Human Cost, Lura Chamberlain Apr 2019

Fosta: A Hostile Law With A Human Cost, Lura Chamberlain

Fordham Law Review

The Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 (“FOSTA”) rescinded legal immunity for websites that intentionally host user-generated advertisements for sex trafficking. However, Congress’s mechanism of choice to protect sex-trafficking victims has faced critique and backlash from advocates for those involved in commercial sex, who argue that FOSTA’s broad legislative language does far more to harm sex workers—a group distinct from sex-trafficking victims—than it does to end sex trafficking, chilling significant protected speech in the process. These critics posit that FOSTA’s results toward eradicating sex trafficking have been negligible and that its chief outcome has …

It Is Emphatically The Province And Duty Of State Courts To Say What Tort Law Is, Sijin Choi Apr 2019

It Is Emphatically The Province And Duty Of State Courts To Say What Tort Law Is, Sijin Choi

Fordham Law Review

Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2011 decision in PLIVA, Inc. v. Mensing, consumers of generic prescription drugs suffering from unwarnedof side effects largely remain without an avenue of legal recourse due to their inability to sue their own manufacturers. But in the pursuit for legal redress, some generic plaintiffs have pursued a narrow window of liability by bringing failure-to-warn claims, sounding in negligence, against the manufacturer responsible for producing the brand-name equivalent of the generic drug. Such claims rest on the rationale that the sui generis federal regulatory scheme governing the prescription drug industry furnishes an inextricable nexus between …

Exploratory Studies Of Microbiome Dysbiosis And Plasticity In Mice And Humans, Xin Zhou Apr 2019

Exploratory Studies Of Microbiome Dysbiosis And Plasticity In Mice And Humans, Xin Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

The human body is cohabitated with large number of microorganisms, which potentially influence the health conditions of the host. Dynamic interactions between microbiome and host are critical for this cohabitation relationship. Among human population, the composition of microbiome shows clear interpersonal variations and intrapersonal plasticity, with patterns and mechanisms that are currently unclear. In the first part of this thesis, we explored the human microbiome variations in relation to healthy aging, aimed to understand if microbiome imbalance, or dysbiosis, is a common phenotype of older adults regardless of the age-related diseases. In the second part, we expanded our investigation on …

Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight Apr 2019

Modeling Land Subsidence Using Insar And Airborne Electromagnetic Data, Ryan G. Smith, R. Knight

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Land subsidence as a result of groundwater overpumping in the San Joaquin Valley, California, is associated with the loss of groundwater storage and aquifer contamination. Although the physical processes governing land subsidence are well understood, building predictive models of subsidence is challenging because so much subsurface information is required to do so accurately. For the first time, we integrate airborne electromagnetic data, representing the subsurface, with subsidence data, mapped by interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), to model deformation. By combining both data sets, we are able to solve for hydrologic and geophysical properties of the subsurface to effectively model the …

Centaur Screenwriting With 345m Gpt-2: The Problems And Possibilities Of Ai-Generated Creative Content For The Screen, Olivia Kane

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

In a world of technological advances, the line between human and artificially generated content is becoming increasingly blurred. AI generated visual art proves more pleasing to the eye, and music composed by computers is nearly indistinguishable from that of a human musician. The written word, however, seems to be one of the last great frontiers that artificial intelligence has yet to perfect. Our innate human ability to recognize anomalies in language prevents current platforms like GTP-2 from being effective in generating creative content on its own. Human interference and editing, however, may be able to create a new brand of …

Can Artificial Intelligence Be Creative?, Alexander Beatty

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

In a recently published essay, Sean Dorrance Kelly, a Philosophy professor at Harvard University, proposes his arguments for why he does not believe artificial intelligence has the capacity for true creativity. As one may expect from an individual of his profession, Kelly makes a compelling case for his claim; however, at its core, the piece is routed in the individual's natural biases and limited knowledge of the tech. As his piece is of the highest caliber of literature on the subject, it beautifully summarizes the most compelling arguments against artificial creativity. In this project, I will break down the key …

The Effect Of High Impact Practices On Student Thriving In College, Cody Lloyd Apr 2019

The Effect Of High Impact Practices On Student Thriving In College, Cody Lloyd

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of campus involvement, specifically high impact practices, on college student thriving. This single institution quantitative study was conducted at a mid-sized Christian university in the southeastern region of the U.S. Using preexisting data, a predictive analysis was conducted via multilinear regression techniques. Through evaluating college student participation in high-impact practices (HIPs), in addition to “alternative engagement indicators,” as independent variables and college student thriving, using the Thriving Quotient, as the dependent variable there were several notable findings. When considering “alternative engagement indicators”, three of the 11 included in the study …
