Time-Lapse And Cure-On-Demand Polymerizations For Adhesives, Wood Repair And Art, John A. Pojman
Time-Lapse And Cure-On-Demand Polymerizations For Adhesives, Wood Repair And Art, John A. Pojman
Science Seminars
The goal of cure-on-demand polymerization is to create one-pot systems that have a long shelf live but will react rapidly when curing is desired. We use two approaches: coupling polymerizations with clock reactions and an approach called frontal polymerization in which a localized reaction zone propagates from the coupling of thermal transport and the Arrhenius dependence of the reaction rate of an exothermic polymerization. We demonstrate that frontal polymerization can be used to create a cure-on-demand putty for filling holes in wood, marble, and sheet rock. The putty has a months-to-years shelf life, is a one-pot formulation, can be applied …

The Escape Room: Supporting Student Success Through A Game-Based Immersive Experience, Justin Haynes, David Tully
Library Technology Conference
Our library prides itself on embracing new and innovative ways to encourage students to connect to and utilize the Libraries’ resources and services. In August 2018 we created a library Escape Room, highlighting key resources and technologies to promote library literacy through a game-based, active learning exercise. Escape Rooms are a recent and popular phenomenon. They are a physical adventure game that require participants to complete a series of puzzles or tasks to advance to the next stage and, eventually, to “escape from the room.” The challenges our participants face compel them to engage with various elements of our Makerspace, …

Student Podcasting Assignments: Merging Information Literacy And Technology Training In The College Classroom, Diana Symons, Adam Konczewski
Library Technology Conference
The CSB/SJU Libraries and CSB/SJU Instructional Technology (formerly Media Services) staff have recently started partnering with faculty from several departments on student podcasting assignments. This session will go over assignment details, the free and relatively simple-to-use technologies we employ, and the supporting documents and resources we’ve developed to support student success. We’ll examine how common information literacy learning objectives for more traditional, paper-based assignments map to podcasting assignments. Session presenters will also address the strengths we each bring to this project (i.e., expertise in information literacy instruction versus technology training and support) and how our shared contributions have led to …
The Dynamic And Diverse Scholarly Information Landscape: What's Next?, Theresa Borchert, Virginia Connell
The Dynamic And Diverse Scholarly Information Landscape: What's Next?, Theresa Borchert, Virginia Connell
Library Technology Conference
We believe that there have been recent fundamental changes in how faculty gather scholarly information, collaborate with others, and teach students. We created a faculty survey to discover how these trends are changing, how they affect access delivery, and how they might impact our teaching at a small liberal arts college. Considering these changes, are the tools we pay for and use in libraries still cost effective? If we believe scaffolding information literacy instruction is important, how should we bring students through our education systems and beyond? These are the kinds of questions we had about faculty research trends. We …

Esther Reed's Political Sentiments And Rhetoric During The Revolutionary War, Kennedy Harkins
Esther Reed's Political Sentiments And Rhetoric During The Revolutionary War, Kennedy Harkins
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
In 1780, during the final stretch of the American Revolutionary War, Esther Reed penned the broadside "Sentiments of an American Woman." It circulated in Philadelphia, persuading citizens to turn over their last dollars to the cause. Reed's broadside called to action the women of Philadelphia; they knocked on doors, campaigned with words, and stepped firmly into the "man's world" of politics and revolution. Reed's words were so effective that women in cities across the colonies took to raising money as well. Using New Historicist and feminist reading strategies, this study compares and contrasts Reed's rhetoric to Thomas Paine's Common Sense …

The Effect Of Social Hierarchy On Behavior In Cercopithecus Petaurista, Mason Reinhart
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The social group hierarchy of three captive C. petaurista specimens was monitored and determined by observing agnostic fights, aggression, and allogrooming incidents. This social group was monitored from May to August in 2017 for 60.5 observation hours total as a continuation of a previous study conducted in spring of 2017. The study took place at the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens. All observations were recorded on template sheets with the location of each individual noted on a 6x6 grid representing the enclosure. A new sheet was used for each 15-minute increment during observation periods. It was concluded that agnostic …
Grooming Solicitation & Hierarchy In Cercopithecus Petaurista, Ryan Domitz
Grooming Solicitation & Hierarchy In Cercopithecus Petaurista, Ryan Domitz
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Allogrooming is a behavioral adaptation present in many primate systems that serves to organize social hierarchies and promote social cohesion by placating future agonistic conspecifics. Lesser Spot-Nosed Guenons (Cercopithecus petaurista) are one species that exhibits allogrooming both in the wild and in captive populations. In a population of C. petaurista, dominant males perform proportionately less allogrooming than do females, possibly indicating dominant individuals are the recipients of higher rates of allogrooming than are subordinate ones. My case study catalogs the activity budgets of three captive Lesser Spot-Nosed monkeys and investigates the relationship between allogrooming, solicitation of allogrooming, and aggression. It …
Donald Trump And Doublespeak: An Unsettling Precursor To The Dystopian Society Of George Orwell's 1984, Ivy Mckay
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper analyses Donald Trump's 2016 Presidential campaign alongside George Orwell's 1984 I analyze specific social elements, including the rhetoric of Trump's supporters, the idea of post-truth, and power, and I exemplify how Trump's campaign and the government in Orwell's novel (the Party) share several commonalities. Trump's self-contradictory speaking and the use of Doublespeak in 1984 is one of the similarities between the fiction of Orwell's text and the reality of our lived experience. Furthermore, the paper discusses the possible effects of this Orwellian Party-like administration. In the final analysis, I conclude that George Orwell's vision of a dystopian future …

An Evaluation Of Mobile Applications For Improving Health In Older Adults: A Review Of The Literature, Patrick Healy
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
There are over one million mobile applications or "apps" available for use in improving health. One population that could potentially benefit from the use of mobile applications is the elderly. Choosing appropriate applications can be daunting, however, and there is a paucity of research identifying which applications are useful for elderly patients. The aim of this study is to perform a literature review regarding the available mobile applications for health and fitness and to provide health care providers with evidence-based information about other potentially useful and novel applications for their older patients.
In an attempt to address the need for …

Energy Consumption And Routing Model For First Responder Vehicles, Alex Rodriguez
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
The ongoing research and prototyping of electric vehicles (EVs) offers numerous opportunities to investigate their performance in various service contexts. As EVs are integrated into society, the reliable prediction of fuel consumption and routing time becomes particularly important in emergency response services. This project develops a preliminary stochastic model that can route and predict the energy consumption and travel time for hypothetical emergency vehicles operating on an electric battery cell. Using a Monte-Carlo framework, we constructed a routing model designed to minimize travel time and resource consumption under various simulated conditions. In doing so, we establish the foundation for balancing …
Throttling Downlink Throughput To Mitigate Device Temperature Increase, Shivank Nayak, Blake Kragten, Siddharth Ray
Throttling Downlink Throughput To Mitigate Device Temperature Increase, Shivank Nayak, Blake Kragten, Siddharth Ray
Defensive Publications Series
The temperature of a mobile device can increase due to heavy use, e.g., high-speed downloads, large computational load, etc. Sustained periods of high temperature can damage the mobile device. The techniques of this disclosure reduce downlink throughput upon detection of device temperature that exceeds a threshold. Throughput is reduced, e.g., by signaling the thermal state to the network, by reporting lower channel quality indicator (CQI) values to the network, etc. After the temperature drops to a safe level, throughput is brought back up in a phased manner.
Task-Specific Color Spaces And Compression For Machine-Based Object Recognition, Shumeet Baluja, David Marwood, Nicholas Johnston
Task-Specific Color Spaces And Compression For Machine-Based Object Recognition, Shumeet Baluja, David Marwood, Nicholas Johnston
Defensive Publications Series
An image is compressed to reduce the memory or bandwidth it occupies. Compression is presently carried out such that the reconstructed (decompressed) image is faithful to the original image. In some recent contexts, images are generated that are not necessarily intended for human viewership. For example, such images are generated for the purposes of machine-based tasks such as action-detection, scene-recognition, etc. In such cases, compression that is driven by fidelity of the decompressed image to the original can be sub-optimal. This disclosure describes techniques to compress images based on the end use of the image. For example, if an image …

Combined Timeline And Event Detection For Internet Of Things (Iot) Data Feeds, Saptarshi Bhattacharya, Shreedhar Madhavapeddi
Defensive Publications Series
Different Internet of Things (IoT) devices capture data relevant to respective functions and transmit such data over the Internet such that it can be stored and accessed by the user. Typically, such data access is limited to the respective single IoT device. Examining data from multiple IoT devices requires the user to check the data feed from each device separately. This disclosure describes techniques to combine data feeds from multiple IoT devices and sensors to generate a single combined data timeline with the user’s permission. The timeline is processed and filtered via smart algorithms to derive and mark events of …

Untethered: Utilizing An Ipad Flashcard App To Interactively Engage And Educate Attendees At Outreach Activities, Katherine Chew
Untethered: Utilizing An Ipad Flashcard App To Interactively Engage And Educate Attendees At Outreach Activities, Katherine Chew
Library Technology Conference
Attracting event attendees to stop and interact with library staff about library resources and services is a persistent problem in librarianship, especially when you are competing against other, “flashier” exhibits within the immediate area. The challenge is to come up with a way to captivate people and engage them long enough to enlighten them about what the library has to offer that doesn’t involve lugging around a heavy or awkward laptop and requiring access to often patchy or expensive internet service.

Code-Switching In Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza And Sandra Cisnero's Caramelo, Julia Jordan
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This research explores the practice of code-switching by bilingual Latinx writers by looking at the works Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza by Gloria Anzaldúa and Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros. In addition to discussing these two primary sources, the paper draws upon scholarly analyses of these works and the practice of code switching at large. This review discusses the growing prevalence of code-switching in Latinx literature, the subversive nature of the practice of code-switching, and the different approaches towards and functions of code-switching in literature. Ultimately, this research demonstrates the ways in which Anzaldúa and Cisneros use code-switching to explore Latinx …
Microgravity Experiments On Accretion In The Protoplanetary Disk, Addison Brown, Stephanie Jarmak
Microgravity Experiments On Accretion In The Protoplanetary Disk, Addison Brown, Stephanie Jarmak
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
We present the results of an experimental investigation of low-energy collisions between cm-scale and smaller particles in the protoplanetary disk to better understand conditions conducive to the growth of planetesimals, the km-sized building blocks of planets. The COLLIDE (Collisions Into Dust Experiment) and PRIME (Physics of Regolith Impacts in Microgravity Experiment) programs involve cm-scale projectiles impacting a target bed of unconsolidated granular material in microgravity environments on Space Shuttle missions and parabolic airplane flights, respectively. In these experiments, a portion of the target material adhered onto the impactor in some lowvelocity impacts ( < 40 cm/s). Such impact speeds are too slow to study in a normal gravity environment (1 g, where g = 9.8 m/s2 is the acceleration due to gravity …
Earthseed Planted: Ecofeminist Teachings In Octavia Butler's Parable Of The Sower, Delia Shahnavaz
Earthseed Planted: Ecofeminist Teachings In Octavia Butler's Parable Of The Sower, Delia Shahnavaz
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower is set in a world where patriarchal supremacy has stifled not only womankind, but also the natural environment of the Earth. By exploring the innate connection between the desecrated Earth and the strangled matriarchy, this paper draws direct links to Butler's world and ecofeminist theory by Vandana Shiva and others, ultimately concluding that Butler's "Earthseed" serves as a representation of a world in which ecofeminism reigns supreme.

The Brothers: A Study Of The Social Structure Between Two Captive Cheetahs, Chenienne Clemens
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are easily differentiated among other Felids. They exhibit unique physiological features, and their type of social structure has not been seen in any other species of Felid. Coalitions of male cheetahs are seen both in the wild and in captivity, while female cheetahs remain solitary. This paper is a compilation of a twelve-week observational study of the two male cheetahs at the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford, Florida. The focus of the study was the social structure between the two related individuals. The observational data showed that there is a lack of any hierarchy or …
Temperature Effects On Greenhouse Gas Production From Treatment Wetland Soils Along A Nutrient Gradient, Kyle Dittmer, Havalend Steinmuller
Temperature Effects On Greenhouse Gas Production From Treatment Wetland Soils Along A Nutrient Gradient, Kyle Dittmer, Havalend Steinmuller
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
It is generally accepted that increased temperatures are positively correlated with microbial respiration rates, causing greater greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (CO2 and CH4) from wetlands. The goal of this study was to understand the interacting effects of temperature and nutrient concentrations on GHG emissions from wetland soils. Complementary field studies and a laboratory study were completed within Cell 1 of the Orlando Wetlands Park (Christmas, FL). Four sampling locations were established along a transect and sampled in summer and winter for the field studies. Soils (0-10 cm) were incubated under anaerobic conditions for 48-hours at ambient or …
