The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 1.25 million deaths yearly due to road traffic accidents worldwide and the number has been continuously increasing over the last few years. Nearly fifth of these accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Existing work of distracted driver detection is concerned with a small set of distractions (mostly, cell phone usage). Unreliable ad hoc methods are often used. In this paper, we present the first publicly available dataset for driver distraction identification with more distraction postures than existing alternatives. In addition, we propose a reliable deep learning-based solution that achieves a 90% accuracy. The system …
The Selection Of Parameters In Debris Flow Modeling: A Sensitivity Study Using The Discrete Element Method, Cora Siebert
The Selection Of Parameters In Debris Flow Modeling: A Sensitivity Study Using The Discrete Element Method, Cora Siebert
University Honors Theses
Many studies have examined runout behavior of debris flows on various slopes and in different environments, but few have explicitly modeled their coarse woody debris component. Simulating a coarse-grained debris flow snout including coarse woody debris can be achieved using discrete element modeling. Before modeling the entire system, each parameter that influences the model must be determined and analyzed. Using 5 m resolution IfSAR data from Sitka, Alaska as the control topography, I conducted a sensitivity analysis of the behavior of a single particle as it travels downslope. Parameters of relevance are normal and tangential contact stiffness, viscous damping coefficient, …

SL-1-39 [1-(4-chloro-3-methylphenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)thiourea] is a new flexible heteroarotinoid (Flex-Het) analog derived from the parental compound, SHetA2, previously shown to inhibit cell growth across multiple cancer types. The current study aims to determine growth inhibitory effects of SL-1-39 across the different subtypes of breast cancer cells and delineate its molecular mechanism. Our results demonstrate that while SL-1-39 blocks cell proliferation of all breast cancer subtypes tested, it has the highest efficacy against HER2+ breast cancer cells. Molecular analyses suggest that SL-1-39 prevents S phase progression of HER2+ breast cancer cells (SKBR3 and MDA-MB-453), which is consistent with reduced expression of key cell-cycle …

Teaching materials are the most important component in learning. This research and development aims to produce products and test the validity, systematics, communicativeness, and attractiveness of short story writing teaching materials with prophetic values. This study adapted the seven steps of the Borg and Gall development model, namely (1) information collection, (2) planning, (3) product development, (4) initial field trials, (5) initial product revisions, (6) field trials, (7) final product revisions. The results of the effectiveness test obtained a value of t = 7.191 with sig. 0,000 which means <0.05. Thus, the score of students has increased significantly in writing short stories after using teaching materials to write short stories containing prophetic values.

Declining environmental quality is one of population caused by household consumption behavior. Some of the highest contaminant contributions are domestic waste, waste, and company waste. Waste contamination will lead to dead fish, decreased water quality and disease transmission. Community approach can be done to solve the waste problem, especially at the household level. This study uses quantitative methods to analyze the effect of intervention and waste management training on changes in household waste management knowledge and practices. This type of research uses quasi experiment with one group of pre and post test design. The results showed that there was an …

Gene Expression Meta-Analysis Of Parkinson's Disease And Its Relationship With Alzheimer's Disease, Jack Kelly, Rana Moyeed, Camille Carroll, Diego Albani, Xinzhong Li
Peninsula Medical School
Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are the most common neurodegenerative diseases and have been suggested to share common pathological and physiological links. Understanding the cross-talk between them could reveal potentials for the development of new strategies for early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention thus improving the quality of life of those affected. Here we have conducted a novel meta-analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in PD microarray datasets comprising 69 PD and 57 control brain samples which is the biggest cohort for such studies to date. Using identified DEGs, we performed pathway, upstream and protein-protein interaction analysis. We …

Computer Information Technology Faculty Publications
The realization of Internet of Underground Things (IOUT) relies on the establishment of reliable communication links, where the antenna becomes a major design component due to the significant impacts of soil. In this paper, a theoretical model is developed to capture the impacts of change of soil moisture on the return loss, resonant frequency, and bandwidth of a buried dipole antenna. Experiments are conducted in silty clay loam, sandy, and silt loam soil, to characterize the effects of soil, in an indoor testbed and field testbeds. It is shown that at subsurface burial depths (0.1-0.4m), change in soil moisture impacts …
