Let Me Edutain You! Practices Of Student Engagement Employed By New Lecturers, Harriet Dismore, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang Feb 2019

Let Me Edutain You! Practices Of Student Engagement Employed By New Lecturers, Harriet Dismore, Rebecca Turner, Rong Huang

Plymouth Institute of Education

Over the last few years, student engagement has become a commonly used term in Higher Education across the United Kingdom, American and Australasian higher education systems. This article presents research on an area of student engagement absent from the literature, that of new lecturers’ practices. Following detailed analyses of interview data after one year of teaching, the findings reveal a range of perceptions, pressures and tensions relating to student engagement which influence practice. Most lecturers described engagement as an emotional construct (the need for students to ‘like’ learning) as well as a cognitive construct (what they learn). However, there were …

Effects Of Bark Beetle Attacks On Forest Snowpack And Avalanche Formation – Implications For Protection Forest Management, Michaela Teich, Andrew D. Giunta, Pascal Hagenmuller, Peter Bebi, Martin Schneebeli, Michael J. Jenkins Feb 2019

Effects Of Bark Beetle Attacks On Forest Snowpack And Avalanche Formation – Implications For Protection Forest Management, Michaela Teich, Andrew D. Giunta, Pascal Hagenmuller, Peter Bebi, Martin Schneebeli, Michael J. Jenkins

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Healthy, dense forests growing in avalanche terrain reduce the likelihood of slab avalanche release by inhibiting the formation of continuous snow layers and weaknesses in the snowpack. Driven by climate change, trends towards more frequent and severe bark beetle disturbances have already resulted in the death of millions of hectares of forest in North America and central Europe, affecting snowpack in mountain forests and potentially reducing their protective capacity against avalanches. We examined the spatial variability in snow stratigraphy, i.e., the characteristic layering of the snowpack, by repeatedly measuring vertical profiles of snow penetration resistance with a digital snow micro …

Adapting Descriptive Psychological Phenomenology To Include Dyadic Interviews: Practical Considerations For Data Analysis, Michelle Tkachuk, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Anusha Kassan, Gina Dimitropoulos

The Qualitative Report

Dyadic interviews are an approach to qualitative data collection designed to understand the meaning pairs of individuals make from experiences. The greatest benefit of dyadic interviews, and perhaps a reason for their gaining momentum in the literature, is that they encourage participants to interact, resulting in detailed and complex descriptions of phenomena. However, dyadic interviews pose challenges to qualitative researchers. Researchers must figure out how to account for the presence of two interviewees, any differences in perspective, and interactions. Unfortunately, no known study demonstrates how the interactions of dyadic interviews can be analyzed in accordance with a methodological approach. Rather, …

“Build A Bridge So You Can Cross It:” A Photo-Elicitation Study Of Health And Wellness Among Homeless And Marginally Housed Veterans, Keri L. Rodriguez, Lauren M. Broyles, Michael A. Mitchell, Melissa E. Wieland, Gala True, Adam J. Gordon

The Qualitative Report

As part of a photo-elicitation interview study, we aimed to describe homeless and marginally housed Veterans’ experiences with health and wellness, health decisions, and health-related behaviors. Twenty Veterans receiving Veterans Affairs Homeless Patient-Aligned Care Team care took photographs depicting health and wellness, then used their photographs to discuss the same topics in 30-60 minute audio-recorded, semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews. Transcripts were analyzed using template analysis. Veterans described eight dimensions related to their health and wellness; physical, social, and environmental were most commonly discussed, followed by emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, and financial wellness. Photographs contained literal and metaphorical depictions that were positively-oriented, …

Musical Memos In Qualitative Inquiry: Creating Artful, Embodied And Salient Reflections, Dale Boyle, Lynn Butler-Kisber Feb 2019

Musical Memos In Qualitative Inquiry: Creating Artful, Embodied And Salient Reflections, Dale Boyle, Lynn Butler-Kisber

The Qualitative Report

This article presents musical memoing as an arts-based reflective process and as a way to engage with and represent data in qualitative inquiry. Used in conjunction with more well-known approaches to data analysis (constant comparison and narrative analysis), musical memos serve to pull forth and highlight salient understandings emerging in the analyses. Moreover, musical memoing allows for the creation of concise yet holistic representations of the data, which can be performed in an embodied manner to enhance understanding of phenomena. The role of musical memoing is discussed within the context of a research study carried out at McGill University entitled, …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In this work, multibeam echosounder (MBES) and dual frequency sidescan sonar (SSS) data are combined to map the shallow (5–100 m) benthic habitats of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ), Greece, a Marine Protected Area (MPA). NMPZ hosts extensive prairies of the protected Mediterranean phanerogams Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa, as well as reefs and sandbanks. Seafloor characterization is achieved using the multi-frequency acoustic backscatter of: (a) the two simultaneous frequencies of the SSS (100 and 400 kHz) and (b) the MBES (180 kHz), as well as the MBES bathymetry. Overall, these high-resolution datasets cover an area of 84 …

Personality Characteristics And Study Choices, Maxwell Casper, Melissa Lehman Feb 2019

Personality Characteristics And Study Choices, Maxwell Casper, Melissa Lehman

Student Publications and Presentations

Personality is a widely studied topic in the field of Psychology, and one important area of research examines how personality affects people’s everyday lives. Though there are many models for studying personality, the Big Five model (McCrae & John, 1992), which includes the components Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, has been established as a reliable and valid measure. Previous research has shown that personality influences effort in class, but little research has been published on how personality influences the way students study. Similarly, although research has demonstrated that personality may be related to leadership choices, there is …

A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro Feb 2019

A Historical Approach To Understanding Explanatory Proofs Based On Mathematical Practices, Erika Oshiro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation focuses on mathematical explanation found in proofs looked at from a historical point of view, while stressing the importance of mathematical practices. Current philosophical theories on explanatory proofs emphasize the structure and content of proofs without any regard to external factors that influence a proof’s explanatory power. As a result, the major philosophical views have been shown to be inadequate in capturing general aspects of explanation. I argue that, in addition to form and content, a proof’s explanatory power depends on its targeted audience. History is useful here, because from it, we are able to follow the transition …

Examining The Effects Of Screen Size On Archaeological Data Collection, John Mcdowell, Jack Meyers, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson

Student Publications and Presentations

Archaeology is the study of human history through excavations of sites and the analysis of the artifacts found there. Such artifacts include faunal bones, tools, and pottery. This research looks at the effects of screen size used during data collection on archaeological sites here in Florida. We specifically focused on a midden site found in South Inlet Park in Boca Raton. Middens are the dumping grounds for past human occupation in an area, which makes them full of insight into the lives of those people: what they ate, with whom they traded, and how long and how they used a …

Comparing Vascular Deficiency Between Caucasian And Hispanic Metabolic Syndrome Women, Lorenzo Juarez, Jerene Yazzie, Andi Johnson, Abraham Gomez, Klaudia Szych, Ariel Gomez, Matthew A. Barlow Phd

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States especially in Hispanics. People with Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) generally have high blood pressure, excess body fat and fasting glucose and abnormal cholesterol. We evaluated Hispanic (HS) and Caucasian (CA) women diagnosed with MetSyn in New Mexico and sedentary control with an initial screening and vascular measurements. Previous work from our lab indicated significant deficiencies between the control and MetSyn women in the measurements of the vascular mechanisms of developing deficits associated with the metabolic deficiencies. We aimed to identify if the health disparate HS population …

Patellofemoral Syndrome, Prystyn M. Covington Feb 2019

Patellofemoral Syndrome, Prystyn M. Covington

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

CLINICAL PRESENTATION & EXAM: Patellofemoral syndrome is an aching pain at the front of the knee and is common in athletes. Patellofemoral syndrome occurs due to many factors such as overuse (repetitive stress on the knee), trauma to the knee, surgery, and weak muscles. Surgery to the knee using the patellar tendon as a graft to fix the anterior cruciate ligament greatly increases the risk of pain. Many factors play a role in increasing the risk of developing patellofemoral syndrome such as sports, age, and gender. Most people who develop patellofemoral syndrome tend to be adolescents or young adults. …
