‘You Guys Are Bilingual Aren’T You?’ Latinx Educational Leadership Pathways In The New Latinx Diaspora, Katherine Rodela, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Alison Cochrun Feb 2019

‘You Guys Are Bilingual Aren’T You?’ Latinx Educational Leadership Pathways In The New Latinx Diaspora, Katherine Rodela, Claudia Rodriguez-Mojica, Alison Cochrun

Teacher Education

Existing research suggests that Latinx educational leaders in the U.S. positively impact Latinx student outcomes and home–school relationships. Yet, much of this research has been conducted in traditional U.S. Latinx immigrant destinations. We know little about the Latinx leadership experiences in regions where Latinx communities are smaller, yet growing quickly such as the New Latinx Diaspora. Using Latina/o Critical Race Theory, this study analyzed in-depth interviews with five Latinx administrators in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Participants’ counter-stories revealed three key findings: their bilingualism was an asset and liability in their early careers, they demonstrated deep persistence in the face of …

Shingled Magnetic Recording Disks For Mass Storage Systems, Quoc Minh Le Feb 2019

Shingled Magnetic Recording Disks For Mass Storage Systems, Quoc Minh Le

Engineering Ph.D. Theses

Disk drives have seen a dramatic increase in storage density over the last five decades, but to continue the growth seems difficult if not impossible because of physical limitations. One way to increase storage density is using a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) disk. Shingled writing is a promising technique that trades off the inability to update in-place for narrower tracks and thus a much higher data density. It is particularly appealing as it can be adopted while utilizing essentially the same physical recording mechanisms currently in use. Because of its manner of writing, an SMR disk would be unable to …

Through Community Eyes: The Transition Of International Organizations From Community Aid To Development In Postconflict Sierra Leone, Whitney Mcintyre Miller Feb 2019

Through Community Eyes: The Transition Of International Organizations From Community Aid To Development In Postconflict Sierra Leone, Whitney Mcintyre Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Sierra Leone experienced an 11-year civil war, brutalizing its people and destroying its communities. With the cessation of violence, international organizations helped to secure peace, deliver aid and supplies, and, after, assist with development projects. This grounded theory study, which aims to understand the role these organizations played from the viewpoint of community members in 2 communities, posits that community members’ regard of international organizations lessened as their efforts transitioned from securing the peace and relief efforts to aid for development. Highlighted are the successes and challenges of this work and a broad discussion of implications and recommendations.

potassium (K+) channels shape the response properties of neurons. Although enormous progress has been made to characterize K+ channels in the primary auditory neurons, the molecular identities of many of these channels and their contributions to hearing in vivo remain unknown. Using a combination of RNA sequencing and single molecule fluorescent in situ hybridization, we localized expression of transcripts encoding the sodium-activated potassium channels KNa1.1 (SLO2.2/Slack) and KNa1.2 (SLO2.1/Slick) to the primary auditory neurons (spiral ganglion neurons, SGNs). To examine the contribution of these channels to function of the sGNs in vivo, we measured auditory brainstem responses in KNa1.1/1.2 double …

Japanese Pamphlets, Volume I, 1906-1914

Japanese Pamphlets

Nineteen politically oriented pamphlets published between 1906 to 1914 that set forth the pros and cons of Japanese continuing to reside in the United States and California. The White population was particularly concerned about the mixing of races and wanted laws that not only excluded the Japanese who were living in the United States (including children born in the United States) from citizenship but also from leasing or owning land. Those who were anti-Japanese described the Japanese as an inferior race incapable of assimilating into the White population. The pamphlets in this volume also include responses from the Japan Society …

Japanese Pamphlets, Volume Ii, 1912-1920

Japanese Pamphlets

Twenty-nine politically oriented pamphlets published between 1912-1929 set forth the pros and cons of Japanese continuing to reside in the United States and California. The White population was particularly concerned about the mixing of races and wanted laws that not only excluded the Japanese who were living in the United States (including children born in the United States) from citizenship but also from leasing or owning land. Arguments used against the Japanese living in America included claims of surreptitious entries (e.g., being smuggled in through Mexico), Japanese use of “Picture Prides, Japanese efforts to control the soil, Japanese use of …

How Students Information Literacy Skills Change Over Time: A Longitudinal Study, Veronica Wells Feb 2019

How Students Information Literacy Skills Change Over Time: A Longitudinal Study, Veronica Wells

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

How do students’ information literacy skills change over the course of their undergraduate education? We assume or at least hope they will improve. But do they? And if so, by how much? At the University of the Pacific, we are using the SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) Test to assess undergraduate students’ information literacy skills and to see how they have changed over time. The SAILS Test is a multiple-choice test that has been used by more than 200 universities across the world. According to their website, the SAILS Test can “determine how well your students can navigate …

Extensive Review On Laminated Bus Bar For Low And High Power Applications, Prashant B. T. Singh, Phaneendra Babu Bobba, K. Suresh, Benny J. Varghese

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research

This paper explains about wide range of applications for Laminated Bus Bar used for high and low power applications. Authors also explains ways to effective utilize laminated bus bar when compared to conventional bus bar. Laminated bus bars are designed with low stray inductance and high capacitance with a uniform current distribution in conducting plate. Parameters like Length, Width, material thickness and other miscellaneous parameters effect Laminated bus bar performance. With a proper design of Laminated bus bar it can best utilized, laminated bus bar are suitable for many low and high power applications which are discussed in this paper. …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Acp Management On The Energy Performance Of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Via Nutrient Recovery, Sarah Bauer, Fangwei Cheng, Lisa Colosi Feb 2019

Evaluating The Impacts Of Acp Management On The Energy Performance Of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Via Nutrient Recovery, Sarah Bauer, Fangwei Cheng, Lisa Colosi

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is of interest in producing liquid fuels from organic waste, but the process also creates appreciable quantities of aqueous co-product (ACP) containing high concentrations of regulated wastewater pollutants (e.g., organic carbon, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P)). Previous literature has not emphasized characterization, management, or possible valorization of ACP wastewaters. This study aims to evaluate one possible approach to ACP management via recovery of valuable scarce materials. Equilibrium modeling was performed to estimate theoretical yields of struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) from ACP samples arising from HTL processing of selected waste feedstocks. Experimental analyses were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of …
