Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States especially in Hispanics. People with Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) generally have high blood pressure, excess body fat and fasting glucose and abnormal cholesterol. We evaluated Hispanic (HS) and Caucasian (CA) women diagnosed with MetSyn in New Mexico and sedentary control with an initial screening and vascular measurements. Previous work from our lab indicated significant deficiencies between the control and MetSyn women in the measurements of the vascular mechanisms of developing deficits associated with the metabolic deficiencies. We aimed to identify if the health disparate HS population …

Patellofemoral Syndrome, Prystyn M. Covington
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
CLINICAL PRESENTATION & EXAM: Patellofemoral syndrome is an aching pain at the front of the knee and is common in athletes. Patellofemoral syndrome occurs due to many factors such as overuse (repetitive stress on the knee), trauma to the knee, surgery, and weak muscles. Surgery to the knee using the patellar tendon as a graft to fix the anterior cruciate ligament greatly increases the risk of pain. Many factors play a role in increasing the risk of developing patellofemoral syndrome such as sports, age, and gender. Most people who develop patellofemoral syndrome tend to be adolescents or young adults. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) individuals presented declining sensitivity to insulin (p=.0201) as calculated by insulin sensitivity index (ISI-60) measurement. The young women categorized as MetSyn were previously found to have significantly lower (ISI-60) from healthy controls (Gomez, 2018), and had higher percent body fat (p< .05), diminished HDL (p< .05), and higher expenditure of Kcals (p=.04) compared to controls as measured by 7 day accelerometer. Cardiovascular modification is hypothesized to involve progressive dysfunction of the insulin mediated AKT/PKB eNOS pathway. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify if daily sedentary activity is associated with myocardial workload in the development of the metabolic disorder. We hypothesized metabolic syndrome individuals Rate Pressure Product (RPP) would be at elevated at rest and through various workloads of small muscle exercise. METHODS: We compared daily activity to heart …

Different occupations require mental clarity under physically stressful environments. Recent studies have shown ketone salt supplementation improves cognitive capacity during exhaustive exercise. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acute supplementation of ketone salts on cognitive performance during a dual stress challenge (DSC) with aerobic exercise. METHODS: Sixteen (n=16) recreationally active healthy college-aged males (aged 21.9± 1.9 years, mass of 80.6± 7.4kg, height of 175.8± 8.6 cm and VO2 peak of 40.5± 8.4 (ml•kg-1•min-1)participated in this placebo-controlled, triple-blinded, counter balanced, cross-over design study. The subjects completed a total of 4 …
Effects Of A 28-Day Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet On Metabolic And Performance Markers In Professional Firefighters, Andrew E. Gonzalez, Hunter S. Waldman, Matthew J. Mcallister
Effects Of A 28-Day Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet On Metabolic And Performance Markers In Professional Firefighters, Andrew E. Gonzalez, Hunter S. Waldman, Matthew J. Mcallister
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE:Firefighters (FF) experience acute physiological and psychological stressors such as disturbed sleep patterns, frequent snacking, smoke exposure, and intense physical exertion, likely contributing to a significant risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sudden cardiac death. Additionally, FF have high obesity prevalence rates and low cardiovascular fitness levels. Proper dietary and exercise regime interventions may decrease CVD risk. Carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRD) may benefit FF health through increased metabolic flexibility, decreased fat mass, and improved body composition, without negatively affecting the strength and aerobic performance. METHODS:Twenty-one healthy, male professional FF recruited from local fire departments underwent 9 testing sessions: Trials …

Can Smart Phone Pedometer Applications Accurately Estimate Caloric Expenditure During Exercise?, Rebecca Sipes, Hollyann Wells, Libby Mccurley, Joe D. Bell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mobile devices are increasingly being used to track various fitness and activity parameters via free applications (apps). Numerous pedometer apps are available that in addition to tracking steps, also provide an estimation of calories expended. The accuracy of these apps in their estimation of caloric expenditure during activity is not well documented. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of the Stepz® free pedometer app in estimating kcal burned while walking on a treadmill by comparing this method to the validated method of indirect calorimetry. METHODS: Twenty-four students with mean age 20.5 ±1.4 years …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of whole-body vibration frequency on muscular function of lower extremities and jump performance depending on squat depth. METHODS: Thirteen male and fifteen female recreationally active subjects (ages 18-40) volunteered to participate in the study. Once all necessary paperwork was completed, anthropometric and equipment settings were recorded. Feet placement for all squats were measured to ensure consistency throughout study. Using a goniometer, the subject’s knees were positioned at 140° (high squat depth) or 90° (low squat depth) of flexion during squat exercises. Randomized testing sessions were as follows: 50 …

Rowland, Ryan A. Gordon, Matthew Sokoloski, Gena D. Guerin, Forrest Bernal, Anthony A. Duplanty, Brandon R. Rigby
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
There is evidence that performing brief bouts of aerobic-type exercise before each set of resistance exercise (i.e., integrated concurrent exercise) leads to superior health and fitness outcomes than when the modalities are performed independently (i.e., serial concurrent exercise). This advantage may be due in part to an exaggeration of functional hyperemia leading to an augmented cardiovascular adaptive response. PURPOSE: To analyze circulating levels of an endothelial shear stress-induced biomarker (microRNA-126) and a biomarker of cardiovascular development (microRNA-222) before and after volume- and time-matched serial and integrated concurrent exercise sessions in young, healthy, sedentary adults. METHODS: One female …
