Large Fatty Acid-Derived Aβ42 Oligomers Form Ring-Like Assemblies, Wenhui Xu, Dexter N. Dean, Kelli A. Stockmal, Sarah E. Morgan, Ulrich H.E. Hansmann, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari Feb 2019

Large Fatty Acid-Derived Aβ42 Oligomers Form Ring-Like Assemblies, Wenhui Xu, Dexter N. Dean, Kelli A. Stockmal, Sarah E. Morgan, Ulrich H.E. Hansmann, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari

Faculty Publications

As the primary toxic species in the etiology of Alzheimer disease (AD) are low molecular weight oligomers of Aβ, it is crucial to understand the structure of Aβ oligomers for gaining molecular insights into AD pathology. We have earlier demonstrated that in the presence of fatty acids, Aβ42 peptides assemble as 12-24mer oligomers. These Large Fatty Acid-derived Oligomers (LFAOs) exist predominantly as 12mers at low and as 24mers at high concentrations. The 12mers are more neurotoxic than the 24mers and undergo self-replication, while the latter propagate to morphologically distinct fibrils with succinct pathological consequences. In order to glean into their …

Surface And Interface Properties In Thin-Film Solar Cells: Using Soft X-Rays And Electrons To Unravel The Electronic And Chemical Structure, Lothar Weinhardt, Dirk Hauschild, Clemens Heske Feb 2019

Surface And Interface Properties In Thin-Film Solar Cells: Using Soft X-Rays And Electrons To Unravel The Electronic And Chemical Structure, Lothar Weinhardt, Dirk Hauschild, Clemens Heske

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Thin‐film solar cells have great potential to overtake the currently dominant silicon‐based solar cell technologies in a strongly growing market. Such thin‐film devices consist of a multilayer structure, for which charge‐carrier transport across interfaces plays a crucial role in minimizing the associated recombination losses and achieving high solar conversion efficiencies. Further development can strongly profit from a high‐level characterization that gives a local, electronic, and chemical picture of the interface properties, which allows for an insight‐driven optimization. Herein, the authors' recent progress of applying a “toolbox” of high‐level laboratory‐ and synchrotron‐based electron and soft X‐ray spectroscopies to characterize the chemical …

Maternal And Gestational Influences On Childhood Blood Pressure., Bonita Falkner Feb 2019

Maternal And Gestational Influences On Childhood Blood Pressure., Bonita Falkner

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Exposures that contribute to a sub-optimal intrauterine environment can have an effect on the developing fetus. Impaired fetal growth that results in low birth weight is an established risk factor for cardio-metabolic disorders later in life. Recent epidemiologic and prospective cohort studies that include the maternal and gestational period have identified maternal and gestational conditions that confer increased risk for subsequent cardio-metabolic disorders in the absence of low birth weight. Maternal pre-conception health status, including chronic obesity and type 2 diabetes, increase risk for childhood obesity and obesity-related higher blood pressure (BP) in child offspring. Maternal gestational exposures, including gestational …

Development And Validation Of The Fsiq-Rms: A New Patient-Reported Questionnaire To Assess Symptoms And Impacts Of Fatigue In Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis, Stacie Hudgens, René Schüler, Jonathan Stokes, Sonya Eremenco, Elke Hunsche, Thomas P. Leist Feb 2019

Leist

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Objectives: A new patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument to measure fatigue symptoms and impacts in relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) was developed in a qualitative stage, followed by psychometric validation and migration from paper to an electronic format.

Methods: Adult patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) were interviewed to elicit fatigue-related symptoms and impacts. A draft questionnaire was debriefed in cognitive interviews with further RRMS patients, and revised. Content confirmation interviews were conducted with patients with progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis (PRMS) and relapsing secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (RSPMS). Psychometric analyses used data from adult patients with different RMS subtypes and matched non-RMS controls in …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Workshop presented as a part of the Alice’s Adventures in Scholarly Conversations week-long event hosted by UCF Libraries.

Workshop summary:

When is a tweet as important as a journal article? Does it matter which journal an article is published in? Are books always better? Join us as we explore how the context in which a scholarly conversation happens can provide important clues about who can be trusted and when you are being hoodwinked. The final clue to Alice’s location will be revealed!

Newgeochemical Evidence For The Origin Of North America's Largest Dune Field, The Nebraska Sand Hills, Central Great Plains, Usa, Daniel R. Muhs, James R. Budahn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Nebraska SandHills region is the largest dune field inNorthAmerica and has diverse aeolian landforms. It has been active during both the late Pleistocene and late Holocene. Despite decades of study, the source of sediment for this large sand sea is still controversial. Here we report new trace element compositions of aeolian sand that are compared to four hypothesized sediment sources, Tertiary rocks of the Arikaree Group and Ogallala Group, unconsolidated sands of Pliocene age, and Platte River systemsands. All four potential sources have amineralogy that is similar to the Nebraska Sand Hills. K/Rb, K/Ba, Sc-Th-La, Eu/Eu*, LaN/YbN, As/Sb, and …

Snap Judgments: Using Snapchat To Challenge The Stereotypes And Assumptions About Academic Libraries., Courtney M. Block Feb 2019

Snap Judgments: Using Snapchat To Challenge The Stereotypes And Assumptions About Academic Libraries., Courtney M. Block

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper explores the potential for Snapchat to act as an advocacy tool for academic librarians. Snapchat is a social media app that allows users to send videos, drawings, images, and more. The researcher, a User Engagement Librarian at an academic library, was curious about the potential to use Snapchat as an advocacy tool, a tool to gauge current library attitudes, stereotypes, and perceptions, and an opportunity for feedback. In an attempt to challenge the assumptions about academic librarianship, the author used the app to engage with followers through a series of shared videos and images depicting a variety of …
