Estimating Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity From Pre- And Postsynaptic Spiking, Abed Ghanbari Feb 2019

Estimating Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity From Pre- And Postsynaptic Spiking, Abed Ghanbari

Doctoral Dissertations

Fast information transmission in neural networks is heavily influenced by short-term synaptic plasticity (STP), and the type and timescale of STP varies by cell-type and brain region. Although STP has been widely characterized in vitrofrom recordings of postsynaptic potentials or currents, characterizing STP in in vivoin behaving animals is difficult due to the lack of large-scale intracellular recordings. Here, we use paired extracellular observations to estimate the short-term dynamics of synaptic transmission from spikes alone. We introduce an augmented generalized linear model (GLM) that includes a dynamic functional connection as well as several, non-synaptic factors that alter spike …

The Case For The Green Kant: A Defense And Application Of A Kantian Approach To Environmental Ethics, Zachary T. Vereb Feb 2019

The Case For The Green Kant: A Defense And Application Of A Kantian Approach To Environmental Ethics, Zachary T. Vereb

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Environmental philosophers have argued that Kant’s philosophy offers little for environmental issues. Furthermore, Kant scholars typically focus on humanity, ignoring the question of duties to the environment. In my dissertation, I turn to a number of underexploited texts in Kant’s work to show how both sides are misguided in neglecting the ecological potential of Kant, making the case for the green Kant at the intersection of Kant scholarship and environmental ethics. I build upon previous literature to argue that the green Kant matters for both sides. Rather than a liability, Kant is indeed a conceptual resource. Though many conceive of …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Job satisfaction of employee is crucial in any organization, particularly in the public university libraries. However, the general opinion was that job satisfaction of librarians in public universities in South-West Nigeria has been on the decline. This is because there appears to be total neglect of librarians in the aspect of job security, recognition for a job well done, career development opportunities, conducive work environment, promotion and improved salary package. These occurrences may have contributed adversely to the level of job satisfaction of librarians. The study, therefore, investigated self-efficacy and job satisfaction of librarians in public universities in South-West Nigeria. …

Do Snap Work Requirements Work?, Timothy F. Harris Feb 2019

Do Snap Work Requirements Work?, Timothy F. Harris

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act waived Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) work requirements nationally in 2010 and broadened the eligibility for receiving waivers in subsequent years for Able-Bodied Adults without Dependents (ABAWD). From 2011 to 2016, many states voluntarily imposed work requirements, while other areas became ineligible for waivers because of improved economic conditions. Did the work requirements increase employment as intended, or did the policy merely remove food assistance for ABAWD who—despite an improving economy—still could not find employment? Using data from the American Community Survey from 2010 to 2016, I analyze the influence of work requirements on …

Cd(Ii)- And Pb(Ii)-Induced Self-Assembly Of Peripheral Membrane Domains From Protein Kinase C, Taylor R. Cole, Samuel G. Erickson, Krystal A. Morales, Minwoo Sung, Andreas Holzenburg, Tatyana I. Igumenova

School of Medicine Publications

Cd2+ and Pb2+ are xenobiotic heavy metal ions that use ionic mimicry to interfere with the cellular function of biomacromolecules. Using a combination of SAXS, electron microscopy, FRET, and solution NMR spectroscopy, we demonstrate that treatment with Cd2+ and Pb2+ causes self-assembly of protein kinase C regulatory domains that peripherally associate with membranes. The self-assembly process successfully competes with ionic mimicry and is mediated by conserved protein regions that are distinct from the canonical Ca2+-binding motifs of protein kinase C. The ability of protein oligomers to interact with anionic membranes is enhanced compared to the monomeric species. Our findings suggest …

The Long View: Has Anything Really Improved For Children And Families Involved With Child Welfare Over 3 Decades?, Moira Szilagyi

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

The overall poor health status and outcomes of children and youth in foster care have been documented in multiple studies over the last 3 decades. During this time, knowledge about brain development, positive parenting, resilience, traumatic stress, and epigenetics has exploded, resulting in demands for child welfare to become trauma-informed, child-centered, and developmentally focused. This special issue affords us the opportunity to reflect on: what’s better or not after 30 years; whether legislation and financing are aligned with child welfare’s goals of safety, permanency and well-being; and what remains to be done to improve the outcomes of children and youth …

Putting Families First: How The Opioid Epidemic Is Affecting Children And Families, And The Child Welfare Policy Options To Address It, American Academy Of Pediatrics Council On Foster Care, Adoption, And Kinship Care, Douglas Waite, Mary V. Greiner, Zach Laris

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Abstract: Opioids and Child Welfare

Across the country, placements in foster care are rising. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that 273,539 children in the U.S. entered foster care. In 34 percent of those cases, parental drug abuse was one of the factors leading to the child’s removal from their family. Additionally, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that 400,000 births nationally are affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol and illicit drugs, which represents 10 percent of all live births. As the opioid epidemic continues, increasing numbers of children are at …

Understanding Health Risks For Adolescents In Protective Custody, Sarah J. Beal, Katie Nause, Imani Crosby, Mary V. Greiner Feb 2019

Understanding Health Risks For Adolescents In Protective Custody, Sarah J. Beal, Katie Nause, Imani Crosby, Mary V. Greiner

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Children in child welfare protective custody (e.g., foster care) are known to have increased health concerns compared to children not in protective custody. The poor health documented for children in protective custody persists well into adulthood; young adults who emancipate from protective custody report poorer health, lower quality of life, and increased health risk behaviors compared to young adults in the general population. This includes increased mental health concerns, substance use, sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy, and HIV diagnosis. Identifying youth in protective custody with mental health concerns, chronic medical conditions, and increased health risk behaviors while they remain in …
