Mysterious Moralism: Anthony Comstock’S Crusade Against Female Sexuality And Society’S Resistance Against Censorship And Enforced Christian Values, Gabriella Grilla Feb 2019

Mysterious Moralism: Anthony Comstock’S Crusade Against Female Sexuality And Society’S Resistance Against Censorship And Enforced Christian Values, Gabriella Grilla

Of Life and History

The Gilded Age is often the forgotten age of American history, a time marked by the formation of labor unions, the Chicago World’s Fair, and anarchists. Within this flyover zone of history is Anthony Comstock, a devoutly religious man who despised all things obscene and lustful. On his quest to eliminate vice from American culture Comstock played the upper class against the lower, and pit everyone against women. Claiming to be thinking only of the children, Comstock attempted to repress women back to the home and to Puritanical values. He believed women and new lax gender roles were disintegrating American …

To Green Or Not To Green?: A Study On Consumer Behavior And Ethically Produced Fashion, Gretchen Muller Feb 2019

To Green Or Not To Green?: A Study On Consumer Behavior And Ethically Produced Fashion, Gretchen Muller

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

For a long time, production in the fashion industry wasn’t given a second thought when consumers would purchase fashion goods. Little about how the industry produced its goods was public knowledge, so consumers didn’t worry about the environmental implications of the products they were purchasing. In today’s world, where companies are required to be more transparent and have social responsibility, consumers are more knowledgeable (Shen, et al.; Grappi, et al.; Chan and Wong). This widespread knowledge seems to be affecting the way people purchase fashion. This paper examines how (and if) a consumer base knowledgeable about environmental pollution, caused by …

Diachronics Of Redemption: A Systems Theoretic View Of Rosenzweig’S Star, Martin Zwick Feb 2019

Diachronics Of Redemption: A Systems Theoretic View Of Rosenzweig’S Star, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores Rosenzweig’s idea of Redemption by an interpretative examination of the conceptual structures of the Star. These structures, in which Redemption is integrated with the other two relations, Creation and Revelation, and with the three elements of God, World, and Human, are examined from the perspective of contemporary systems theory. Moses, Pollock, and others have noted the systematic character of the Star. While “systematic” does not necessarily mean “systems-theoretic,” the philosophical theology of the Star and its core hexad of elements and relations exemplify many ideas salient in the systems theory literature. The hexadic star itself fits the …

Ic 058 Guide To Texas State Board Of Medical Examiners Records, 1907-1972, Texas State Board Of Medical Examiners

Institutional Finding Aids

The Texas State Board of Medical Examiners collection consists primarily of licensure records for more than 6,000 Texas physicians. The license applications and related materials date from 1907 to 1972. A typical doctor's file contains biographical information, licensure applications, registration cards, some correspondence, and usually a photograph. In addition to these files, there are two additional boxes of registration cards that are not accompanied by supplemental information. The collection also contains newsletters, a directory, and lists of doctors newly licensed, which date from 1979-2008. See more at IC 058.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Formal planning and development of what became the first Landsat satellite commenced over 50 years ago in 1967. Now, having collected earth observation data for well over four decades since the 1972 launch of Landsat- 1, the Landsat program is increasingly complex and vibrant. Critical programmatic elements are ensuring the continuity of high quality measurements for scientific and operational investigations, including ground systems, acquisition planning, data archiving and management, and provision of analysis ready data products. Free and open access to archival and new imagery has resulted in a myriad of innovative applications and novel scientific insights. The planning of …

Investigation Of The Asteroid - Neutron Star Collision Model For The Repeating Fast Radio Burst, Jeremy L. Smallwood, Rebecca G. Martin, Bing Zhang Feb 2019

Investigation Of The Asteroid - Neutron Star Collision Model For The Repeating Fast Radio Burst, Jeremy L. Smallwood, Rebecca G. Martin, Bing Zhang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

The origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is still a mystery. One model proposed to interpret the only known repeating object, FRB 121102, is that the radio emission is generated from asteroids colliding with a highly magnetized neutron star (NS). With N-body simulations, we model a debris disc around a central star with an eccentric orbit intruding NS. As the NS approaches the first periastron passage, most of the comets are scattered away rather than being accreted by the NS. To match the observed FRB rate, the debris belt would have to be at least 3 orders of magnitude more …

Muscle Atrophy Marker Expression Differs Between Rotary Cell Culture System And Animal Studies, Charles P. Harding, Elizabeth Vargis Feb 2019

Muscle Atrophy Marker Expression Differs Between Rotary Cell Culture System And Animal Studies, Charles P. Harding, Elizabeth Vargis

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Muscular atrophy, defined as the loss of muscle tissue, is a serious issue for immobilized patients on Earth and for humans during spaceflight, where microgravity prevents normal muscle loading. In vitro modeling is an important step in understanding atrophy mechanisms and testing countermeasures before animal trials. The most ideal environment for modeling must be empirically determined to best mimic known responses in vivo. To simulate microgravity conditions, murine C2C12 myoblasts were cultured in a rotary cell culture system (RCCS). Alginate encapsulation was compared against polystyrene microcarrier beads as a substrate for culturing these adherent muscle cells. Changes after culture …

Health Literacy And Type 2 Diabetes In Barbados, Coralene Quimby-Worrell Feb 2019

Health Literacy And Type 2 Diabetes In Barbados, Coralene Quimby-Worrell

The Qualitative Report

In this qualitative instrumental single case study, I explored how patients living with Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Barbados manage the disease and what role health literacy might play. Purposeful sampling aided in selecting the sample for the study. The sample was 23 participants who were 40 years and older, diagnosed with T2D, living in Barbados, and attending the Endocrine Center for treatment. Participants responded to 13 open ended questions used to answer the research questions. Information was coded using NVivo 10 software and the software provided the themes based on the participants’ responses to the interview questions. The themes …

Language And Globalization: An Autoethnographic Approach: Book Review Of A Collection Of Personal Narratives, Anuja Sarda

The Qualitative Report

Maryam Borjian’s (2017a) edited book, Language and Globalization: An Autoethnographic Approach, provides real and personal narratives of authors from different geographical locations across the globe around complex issues surrounding linguistic globalization. Using autoethnography as a method, the book steps away from the typical academic writing. It engages readers into plots contextualized in several parts of the world about diverse languages which are intertwined with theoretical frameworks and concepts specific to the field of language and linguistics. The format of the book allows all readers to comprehend complex concepts through the medium of stories and help make personal connections. The …

Dropped Into Battle: Transitioning To Middle School, Vikki Wandmacher Feb 2019

Dropped Into Battle: Transitioning To Middle School, Vikki Wandmacher

The Qualitative Report

Early adolescence is the beginning of huge changes that eventually move humans from children to adults. One important transition during this time is moving from elementary into middle school. This paper explores my own memories of transitioning from a two-room elementary to a large three-story middle school and the difficulties I encountered. Through the use of the autoethnographical process, I explore my complex relationship as both a middle school student and a middle school principal to this phase of development. Writing the autoethnography allowed for an assessment of my own transition, while also affording the opportunity to reflect these memories …

Interest-Enhancing Approaches To Mathematics Curriculum Design: Illustrations And Personalization, Virginia Clinton, Candace Walkington Feb 2019

Interest-Enhancing Approaches To Mathematics Curriculum Design: Illustrations And Personalization, Virginia Clinton, Candace Walkington

Educational Foundations and Research Faculty Publications

Two common interest-enhancement approaches in mathematics curriculum design are illustrations and personalization of problems to students’ interests. The objective of these experiments is to test a variety of illustrations and personalization approaches. In the illustrations experiment, students (n = 265) were randomly assigned to lessons with story problems containing decorative illustrations, contextual illustrations, diagrammatic illustrations, misleading illustrations, or no illustrations (only text [control condition]). Students’ problem-solving performance and attitudes were not affected by illustration condition, but learning was better in the control compared with contextual illustrations. In the personalization experiment, students (n = 223) were randomly assigned to …

The Unavailability Of Religious Arguments, Omri Ben-Zvi Feb 2019

The Unavailability Of Religious Arguments, Omri Ben-Zvi

Idaho Law Review

Religious arguments, i.e. normative arguments that rely on premises regarding God's commands, routinely figure in legal and public debates. For example, they recently played a public role in the debate on same-sex marriage that ensued after the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. However, philosophers are bitterly divided on the question of whether such arguments are permissible in a liberal democracy. In this Article, I offer a novel rationale for excluding several prominent sub-groups of religious arguments from the public sphere, including from legal argumentation. While most philosophers address this issue as a question of political philosophy, I develop …

Teenage Sexting Statutes: A Critical Examination Of Idaho Code 18-1507a And An Argument Against The Criminalization Of Consensually Shared Sexts, Kacey Jones Feb 2019

Teenage Sexting Statutes: A Critical Examination Of Idaho Code 18-1507a And An Argument Against The Criminalization Of Consensually Shared Sexts, Kacey Jones

Idaho Law Review

Child pornography statutes were enacted to target and prohibit adult exploitation of children. However, these laws came before the advent of smart phones, social media, and before sexting. Nowadays, teens are taking sexually explicit pictures of themselves and sending them to other teens. The problem? Their auto-pornography falls into the definition of child pornography and teens can and are being prosecuted for the creation, possession, and distribution, leading to felony convictions and sex-offender registration. In response to this, many states have enacted specific legislation to address teenage sexting and remove it from falling under the child pornography umbrella. In 2016, …

Comment: Is The Shelter A Sham? An Analysis Of The Treatment Of Foreign Taxes In The Economic Substance Doctrine’S Pre-Tax Profit Test, Brady Espeland

Idaho Law Review

The United States taxes all income earned by a taxpayer, regardless of its source. To prevent double taxation of income and to encourage international trade, Congress created the “Foreign Tax Credit,” which allows a taxpayer to take a credit for any tax paid to another country on income earned abroad. This Comment discusses how the courts should apply the “pre-tax profit” test of the economic substance doctrine to challenge transactions where the taxpayer would incur a loss after paying foreign taxes, but a gain after applying the foreign tax credit. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has challenged these transactions, arguing …
