An inventory of a series of pamphlets published from 1906 through 1925 focused on the presence of Japanese in America, the perception by some that Japan was taking steps to take over America, the great lengths gone to deprive Japanese residing in the United States of land either by purchase or lease and even citizenship, the depiction of Japanese as inferior humans in terms of intellect and morals standing, agreement and laws enacted to limit the ability of Japanese to participate in the economy, anti-Japanese organizations, speeches before various legislative bodies in opposition to the Japanese, Japanese responses to the …

The Anchor, Volume 132.17: February 20, 2019, Hope College

The Anchor: 2019

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

More Than Birds And Bees, Katie O. Estell Feb 2019

More Than Birds And Bees, Katie O. Estell

SURGE

Conversations about sex start as early as middle school, with preteens learning about “the birds and the bees,” sexually transmitted infections, and (hopefully) contraception and safe sex. These conversations continue into high school sex education, which has proven to be crucial in decreasing rates of unwanted pregnancies and STI’s. But something important is missing. These programs never mention, and certainly don’t include, LGBT/Q people. LGBT/Q teens are not taught how to have sex, and how to have safe sex. This leaves us to explore our sexuality on our own terms, which is both awkward and dangerous. If you’re a heterosexually …

De Novo Origins Of Multicellularity In Response To Predation, Matthew D. Herron, Joshua M. Borin, Jacob C. Boswell, Jillian Walker, I. Chen Kimberly Chen, Charles A. Knox, Margrethe Boyd, Frank Rosenzweig, William C. Ratcliff

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The transition from unicellular to multicellular life was one of a few major events in the history of life that created new opportunities for more complex biological systems to evolve. Predation is hypothesized as one selective pressure that may have driven the evolution of multicellularity. Here we show that de novo origins of simple multicellularity can evolve in response to predation. We subjected outcrossed populations of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to selection by the filter-feeding predator Paramecium tetraurelia. Two of five experimental populations evolved multicellular structures not observed in unselected control populations within ~750 asexual generations. Considerable variation …

Effect Of Drug Loading On The Properties Of Temperature-Responsive Polyester-Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Polyester Hydrogels, D. Andrew Prince, Ian J. Villamagna, Cameron C. Hopkins, John R. De Bruyn, Elizabeth R. Gillies Feb 2019

Effect Of Drug Loading On The Properties Of Temperature-Responsive Polyester-Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Polyester Hydrogels, D. Andrew Prince, Ian J. Villamagna, Cameron C. Hopkins, John R. De Bruyn, Elizabeth R. Gillies

Chemistry Publications

Hydrogels that can undergo gelation upon injection in vivo are promising systems for the site-specific delivery of drugs. In particular, some thermo-responsive gels require no chemical additives but simply gel in response to a change from a lower temperature to physiological temperature (37 °C). The gelation mechanism does not involve covalent bonds, and it is possible that incorporation of drugs into the hydrogel could disrupt gelation. We investigated the incorporation of drugs into thermo-responsive hydrogels based on poly(ϵ-caprolactone-co-lactide)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ϵ-caprolactone-co-lactide) (PCLA–PEG–PCLA). Significant differences in properties and in the response …

© 2019 The Author(s). Background: Patient-reported outcome measures developed using Classical Test Theory are commonly comprised of ordinal level items on a Likert response scale are problematic as they do not permit the results to be compared between patients. Rasch analysis provides a solution to overcome this by evaluating the measurement characteristics of the rating scales using probability estimates. This is typically achieved using commercial software dedicated to Rasch analysis however, it is possible to conduct this analysis using non-specific open source software such a R. Methods: Rasch analysis was conducted using the most commonly used commercial software package, RUMM …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 20, 2019, Eric Thompson Feb 2019

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 20, 2019, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 1.00% during January of 2019. The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, implies solid economic growth in Nebraska into the third quarter of 2019. Strong business expectations were the primary reason for the increase in the leading indicator. Respondents to the January Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months. The value of the U.S. dollar also dropped in January for the first time in a year, providing relief …
