Muḥammad Nāṣir Al-Dīn Al-Albānī, Emad Hamdeh

Publications

Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (1914–1999) was one of the most influential Salafi scholars in the 20th century. He sought to reform Islam by requiring Muslims to return a puritanical and literalist approach toward scripture. Albānī moved from Albania to Damascus with his family as a child, and his father became a leading Ḥanafī scholar in the Albanian Muslim community in Syria. From a young age, Albānī disagreed with his father and the Albanian Ḥanafī community. He rejected their allegiance to the Ḥanafī school of law and instead advocated a strict adherence to the Qurʾān and Sunna. His scholarly career was …

Hazardous Plastics In Swiss Lakes?, Montserrat Filella, Andrew Turner Feb 2019

Hazardous Plastics In Swiss Lakes?, Montserrat Filella, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The accumulation and impacts of plastic litter in marine environments has received an extensive attention over the past decade. In contrast, littering in the freshwater environment has received relatively little study, despite the presence of plastics on the shores and beds of lakes and suspended in the lentic water column that are likely to pose the same problems to wildlife as marine plastics. Regardless of the type of water system, the majority of research in this area has targeted the presence of plastics themselves and, sometimes, their accumulation of persistent organic micropollutants (e.g., PCBs, PAHs). Only very recently attention has …

Empirical Investigation Of Data Analytics Capability And Organizational Flexibility As Complements To Supply Chain Resilience, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, Wamba S Fosso, D Roubaud, C Forupon Feb 2019

Empirical Investigation Of Data Analytics Capability And Organizational Flexibility As Complements To Supply Chain Resilience, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, Wamba S Fosso, D Roubaud, C Forupon

Plymouth Business School

Supply chain resilience and data analytics capability have generated increased interest in academia and among practitioners. However, existing studies often treat these two streams of literature independently. Our study model reconciles two different streams of literature: data analytics capability as a means to improve information-processing capacity and supply chain resilience as a means to reduce a ripple effect in supply chain or quickly recover after disruptions in the supply chain. We have grounded our theoretical model in the organisational information processing theory (OIPT). Four research hypotheses are tested using responses from 213 Indian manufacturing organisations collected via a pre-tested survey-based …

Webinar: Rethinking Streets For Bikes: An Evidence Based Guide Of Bike-Friendly Street Retrofits, Marc Schlossberg, Roger Lindgren

TREC Webinar Series

There is a growing demand for better infrastructure and fewer barriers to biking and other forms of space-efficient micromobility. Tackling daily trips by bike is easier on the environment, healthier for users and non-users alike, uses precious urbanized public and private land more efficiently, costs taxpayers less to build and maintain infrastructure, and when routes are safe and comfortable, moving by bike is also fun! Complete Streets policies are being adopted across the country, and there is an active conversation around the safety imperative of a Complete Streets approach. Yet, local officials often need both design guidance and the …

“Right In The Trenches With Them”: Caregiving, Advocacy, And The Political Economy Of Community Health Workers, Ryan I. Logan Feb 2019

“Right In The Trenches With Them”: Caregiving, Advocacy, And The Political Economy Of Community Health Workers, Ryan I. Logan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While the concept of the community health worker (CHW) has existed since the mid-20th century, their function as a legitimate branch of the broader workforce in the United States has been tenuous. Their unique roles have the potential to reduce health disparities within marginalized communities, but stakeholder development of this position risks diminishing the crucial skills of these workers. Anthropological research on these workers has typically assessed them in the developing world, while public health research has focused primarily on their ability to impact specific health outcomes through quantitative studies. As a result of the limited and predominantly quantitative assessments …

Possible Techniques For Translating Personal Names In Children And Young Adult Literature, Ani Susanti, A. Effendi Kadarisman

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Personal names are considered “specific words”and thus most often kept untranslated. However, as translation theory has developed, making it not only changing language features but also mediating cultural aspects, personal names are reconsidered in translation. Since they are culturally bound, this study aims to find out, when personal names are translated, what translation strategies apply and why. The data were collected from the weekly comic Donal Bebek (2018) as well as from the Hunger Games trilogy novels written by Suzanne Collins (2008, 2009, 2010) and translated by Hetih Rusli (2009, 2010, 2012). The findings show that translating personal names in …

The Dangers Of Porous Borders, Barbara Perry, Tanner Mirrlees, Ryan Scrivens Feb 2019

The Dangers Of Porous Borders, Barbara Perry, Tanner Mirrlees, Ryan Scrivens

Journal of Hate Studies

Donald J. Trump’s journey to the White House signaled the resurgence of right-wing populism in the United States. His campaign and his surprising electoral victory rode a wave of anti-elitism and xenophobia. He masterfully exploited the economic and cultural anxieties of white working class and petite bourgeois Americans by deflecting blame for their woes onto the “usual suspects,” among them minorities, liberals, Muslims, professionals and immigrants. His rhetoric touched a chord, and in fact emboldened and energized white supremacist ideologies, identities, movements and practices in the United States and around the world. Indeed, the Trump Effect touched Canada as well. …

Convection In Common Envelopes, Emily C. Wilson Feb 2019

Convection In Common Envelopes, Emily C. Wilson

Theses

The outcomes of stellar evolution can be significantly affected by the presence of close substellar or stellar companions. Common envelopes (CE) are thought to be the main channel for producing close binaries in the universe and occur when an orbiting companion is engulfed in the outer layers of the primary’s envelope. CE outcomes are dependent on the fraction of energy from the decaying orbit that can contribute to ejecting the envelope, often defined via an efficiency, α_eff . The post-CE orbital separations and periods can then be determined given knowledge of the binding energy of the primary’s envelope. In this …
