The goal of this study was to assess the differences in collision work performed by healthy, aged-matched controls compared to patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) to provide foundations for an eventual exoskeleton design. Collision work is energy dissipated into the surrounding environment from impact, in this study’s case, upon heel strike. When designing an exoskeleton for patients with PAD, harvesting energy lost to collision work could be a valuable mechanism to improve walking performance. Devices designed to utilize the normally dissipated energy for assisting propulsion to improve walking performance are under-explored [1, 2]. The purpose of this study was …

Physiological Response To Exercise With Naturally-Occurring Carbon Dioxide Exposure, Megan Johnson
Physiological Response To Exercise With Naturally-Occurring Carbon Dioxide Exposure, Megan Johnson
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide (CO2) plays a normal part in gas exchange and acid-base equilibrium in the human body. With added stress or exposure, CO2 levels can accumulate in the blood and tissues, causing hypercapnia. Research has shown that exposure to CO2 at 4% or 40,000 ppm will cause cardio-respiratory changes, both at rest and during exercise. Lower levels may still cause changes under conditions of added stress, but this has not been elucidated. Preliminary data from our laboratory chamber suggests physiological changes at levels of CO2 reaching 0.08% or 8,000 ppm during experiments with exercising …
Effect Of Local Cold Application During Exercise On Mitochondrial Gene Expression, Ben Meister
Effect Of Local Cold Application During Exercise On Mitochondrial Gene Expression, Ben Meister
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
BACKGROUND: Different modes of exercise and temperatures can elicit different responses in mitochondrial gene expression. Stresses including exercise and cold exposure act to trigger the transcription of genes associated with mitochondrial growth (biogenesis). Traditional endurance exercise is known to have a potent effect on mitochondrial growth biogenesis. However, limited knowledge exists on the effect of local cold application during endurance exercise. Additionally, it is currently unknown how cold exposure impacts mitochondrial breakdown (mitophagy). PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the impact of local muscle cooling during endurance exercise on human skeletal muscle gene expression related to …
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Indirect calorimetry provides the average cost of a stride cycle and prevents from identifying which part of the gait cycle causes increased metabolic cost in patients, however, recent simulation methods allow estimating the time profile of metabolic cost within the stride cycle. In this study, we compare the estimations of the time profile of the metabolic cost of two simulation methods for level and uphill walking. We used kinematic, kinetic and electromyography data from level and uphill walking (one participant) to estimate the time profiles of metabolic cost using the muscle-level metabolic model of Umberger using electromyography and kinematic data …

Halee Keller, Robert Shute, Dustin Slivka
University of Nebraska at Omaha, School of Health and Kinesiology, Omaha, NE
BACKGROUND: Mitochondria are highly concentrated in skeletal muscle tissue, and undergo damage from ROS during metabolic processes. This damage is often left unrepaired and leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, which has been linked to many common diseases. Exercise training increases mitochondrial development within skeletal muscle tissue and thus may be protective. Environmental temperature, when paired with exercise may provide an even greater effect than exercise alone. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of three weeks of exercise …
A Correlation Network Model For Managing Safety And Performance Issues In Bridges And Civil Infrastructures, Prasad Chetti
A Correlation Network Model For Managing Safety And Performance Issues In Bridges And Civil Infrastructures, Prasad Chetti
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Many recent studies have shown that a large percentage of bridges in many parts of the world have low safety rating. National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database contains the information of more than 600,000 bridges, where each bridge has 116 parameters. Current safety inspections require bridge inspectors to manually inspect each bridge every few years. Manpower and budget constraints limit such approach from inspecting the bridges more frequently. Clearly, more efficient approaches need to be developed to improve the process of bridge inspection and increase the overall safety of bridges and civil infrastructures. In this study, we propose a Correlation Network …
Muscle Oxygenation In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease During Walking With And Without An Ankle Foot Orthosis, Anthony Arellano, Hafizur Rahman, Iraklis Pipinos, Jason Johanning, Sara Myers
Muscle Oxygenation In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease During Walking With And Without An Ankle Foot Orthosis, Anthony Arellano, Hafizur Rahman, Iraklis Pipinos, Jason Johanning, Sara Myers
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a cardiovascular disease caused by blockages in the arteries that reduce blood flow to the peripheral limbs. Claudication, a prominent symptom of PAD is a condition in which the lack of blood flow causes an inability to meet the metabolic demands of the muscle tissue, causes severe cramping pain. Previous studies have shown muscle oxygenation starts significantly lower and declines faster in patients with PAD compared to healthy controls. An ankle foot orthosis (AFO) can provide walking assistance by absorbing and returning the mechanical force during walking. We hypothesized oxygenation levels would be higher in …
An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey
An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Stimulants are a class of drugs that have a variety of effects on the brain, including changes in receptor activity in the brain areas responsible for- memory, attention, emotion, motor control, and the reward pathway. Stimulants may be generally classified by their availability. For example, prescription stimulants, which include drugs such as methylphenidate (Concerta™, Ritalin™) and mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall™), must be prescribed by medical professionals. Another regulated stimulant, albeit one available without a prescription, is nicotine; a highly addictive chemical that is age-restricted by the U.S. federal government. Nicotine is found in tobacco products, and in tobacco-free alternatives including …

Bimanual Coordination Assessment Using Prosthetic Simulators, Chris Copeland
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
There were a total of 1.6 million people living with loss of a limb in 2005. This number is projected to double to 3.6 million by 2050 [1]. While prosthetics aim to enhance the function of these individuals, it is estimated that 45% of pediatric prosthetic users reject their prosthesis [2]. The literature which describes the motor control mechanisms of prosthetic use is sparse and often low-powered due to inadequate number of subjects. However, prosthetic simulators may be a solution to chronically low-powered prosthetic studies by serving as functional homologues. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the efficacy …

Signaling Diversity And Inclusion For Open Source Project Health, Georg J.P. Link
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Open source projects often consist of mostly white, male, and English-speaking software developers. For the past decade, women and people from minority backgrounds have sought to bring more diversity to open source projects and make them more inclusive. This presentation summarizes research findings of how projects signal diversity and inclusion to attract these people. A key finding is that signals for diversity and inclusion are wanted, but projects struggle to put them into practice. The presentation discusses implications for signaling theory and open source projects.

Bridges in the US scored a C+ on the infrastructure report card in 2017. There is a need for substantial improvement in conditions of these bridges as they are structurally deficient and can become unsafe in the near future. The most recent estimate puts the nation’s backlog of bridge rehabilitation needs at $123 billion. Throughout the country, many state departments of transportation (DOT) have limited resources, leaving them with difficult decisions about where to invest and allocate their limited resources. To make cost-effective decisions, these bridge stakeholders need clean data and studies to estimate the future condition of bridges. This …

A Picture's Worth A Reputation: Visual And Environmental Arguments In Abandoned Disney Park Photographs, Allegra Hardin
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
This rhetorical criticism analyzes photographs of the Walt Disney Company's abandoned parks, River Country and Discovery Island, taken by Seph Lawless and Shane Perez respectively. Using Foss's (2004) rhetorical focus area of nature, a sample of photographs from Lawless (2016) and Perez's (2009) blogs is analyzed to identify the visual and environmental arguments within the photographs. Noting how these images and the parks themselves are shrouded in obscurity, this essay maintains that the visual and environmental arguments present within the photographs directly challenge the Walt Disney Company's image and calls into question the company's environmental stewardship. This essay contributes to …

Experienced Sexual Assault In The Military: An Exploration Of The Organizational Factors Influencing Under-Reporting And Consequences When Victims Report, Medicine Flower Blue Star
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Sexual assault of both male and female service members is a pervasive and serious problem. In 2017, based on data from the U.S. Department of Defense, 5,200 service members reported sexual assault, representing a 10% increase from 2016. Scholars, military and government leaders are concerned that the prevalence of sexual assault is underestimated due to under-reporting. O’Brien, Keith, and Shoemaker (2015), for example, point to a 2013 report by the U.S. Department of Defense, which estimates that 67% of women and 81% of men do not report their military sexual assaults. One purpose of this study is to explore the …

The study takes a phenomenological approach to understand how students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha experience food insecurity, including the experiences and challenges students face when it comes to being food insecure and the barriers students face in addressing food insecurity. In-depth interviews with six students, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level students, were conducted. Horizontalization, clusters of meanings, textural …
Futurism In Fashion: What Does That Mean?, Jonathan Orozco
Futurism In Fashion: What Does That Mean?, Jonathan Orozco
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In fashion, the term ‘futuristic’ is often used to describe avant-garde clothing designs. It could refer to several things, such as the clothing’s method of production, the materials used, or the garment’s design. Futurism can even refer to the 20th century Italian art movement, and indeed, this movement addressed the problem of designing fashion for the 20th century. We would learn much by examining Futurist fashions in order to understand its legacy in relation to contemporary fashion designers viewed as futuristic today. This paper will review this legacy by looking at five specific examples—Italian Futurists and their contribution …

Effects Of Rangeland Management On Milkweed Grazing And Monarch Conservation, Brittany Poynor
Effects Of Rangeland Management On Milkweed Grazing And Monarch Conservation, Brittany Poynor
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Cattle typically avoid consuming milkweed plants that contain high levels of toxic defense compounds, and therefore many people assume cattle avoid all milkweeds. However, common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) contains only moderate levels of toxic compounds, and observations suggest that cattle regularly consume common milkweed and may even preferentially graze flowers and leaves of this species. These observations directly relate to efforts to add over one billion stems of milkweed to the central USA for monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) conservation. If cattle intentionally consume common milkweed and other milkweed species, and if certain management practices can reduce …

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a cardiovirulent enterovirus from the family Picornaviridae. The RNA genome houses an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) in the 5’ untranslated region (5’UTR) that enables cap-independent translation. Ample evidence suggests that the structure of the 5’UTR is a critical element for virulence. We probe RNA structure in solution using base-specific modifying agents such as dimethyl sulfate as well as backbone targeting agents such as N-methylisatoic anhydride used in Selective 2’-Hydroxyl Acylation Analyzed by Primer Extension (SHAPE). We have developed a pipeline that merges and evaluates base-specific and SHAPE data together with statistical analyses that provides confidence …

Marmosets Respond Consistently To Threats Across Contexts, Sarah Carp
Marmosets Respond Consistently To Threats Across Contexts, Sarah Carp
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Behavioral traits, such as how adventurous an individual is, can vary both across individuals and within an individual across contexts. However, there is evidence that individuals are stable across time in how they respond to certain stimuli. This consistency in behavioral responses to similar environments is termed a behavioral syndrome, or set of correlated behavior. We assessed the degree to which individual marmoset monkeys were consistent across four behavioral tests that measured different aspects of novelty seeking. The four tasks included exposure to a novel object in a familiar environment, exposure to a novel environment, behavioral flexibility in response to …

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is the manifestation of atherosclerotic plaque in the larger arteries of the legs, which results in impaired blood flow to the lower extremities. Markers of vascular health, including endothelial function and arterial stiffness, have been shown to be attenuated in PAD.
Purpose: We sought to examine the effects of a nitrate supplement (body mass-normalized dosage of beetroot juice) on vascular function measurements such as endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and central and peripheral blood pressure in patients with PAD. We hypothesized that acute intake of a nitrate supplement would improve vascular function.
Methods: PAD patients (stage II-III, …

Early Communicative Characteristics Across Samples From Two Infant Populations At-Risk For Autism, Hannah Lopez, Shari Deveney, Anastasia Kyvelidou
Early Communicative Characteristics Across Samples From Two Infant Populations At-Risk For Autism, Hannah Lopez, Shari Deveney, Anastasia Kyvelidou
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Although no single etiology has been identified for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), two infant populations have emerged as particularly high risk: younger siblings of children diagnosed with ASD and infants born prematurely with low birth weight. A key characteristic differentiating high-risk infants from low-risk peers is early eye gaze fixation behaviors. Early gaze fixation behavior is thought to be predictive of communication and language skills. Consequently, identifying differences in early eye gaze behaviors could lead to early intervention services tailored specifically on counteracting early social withdrawal behaviors. Though few studies have compared eye-gaze patterns of these two high-risk infant groups, …

The most pertinent question in terrorism research is not who becomes a terrorist, but who becomes a bomb-maker as opposed to a gunman or a suicide-bomber. To provide a fuller understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process of accepting extremist beliefs, it is essential we embrace a larger view of extremism by linking the psychological antecedents of radicalization with the various types and levels of extremist participation. The current article addresses this issue through an analysis of historiometric data of 261 Salafi Jihadist-inspired extremists in the United States. In doing so, we seek to answer the following question: To …
