Reasons For Vaccine Declination In Healthy Individuals Attending An International Vaccine And Travel Clinic, Timothy L. Wiemken, Julio A. Ramirez, Ruth M. Carrico Mar 2019

Reasons For Vaccine Declination In Healthy Individuals Attending An International Vaccine And Travel Clinic, Timothy L. Wiemken, Julio A. Ramirez, Ruth M. Carrico

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

Little is known about the vaccine-related health behaviors of healthy individuals. We surveyed healthy individuals attending a vaccine center to define the reasons behind vaccine declination when the vaccine is warranted under current guidance. Declination due to perceived risks of the vaccines were by far the most common rationale, suggesting continued need for public health educational campaigns.

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Students frequently request concept-list study guides prior to exams, but the benefits of instructors providing such resources are unclear. Research on memory and comprehension has suggested that some challenges in learning are associated with benefits to performance. In the context of an introductory psychology course, a study was conducted to investigate the impact of providing a concept-list study guide on exam performance, as opposed to having students create a study guide. Additionally, student preferences for various types of study guides were examined. Results indicated that although students greatly prefer that the instructors provide a study guide (as opposed to making …

Value Is Subjective And Other Fallacies In Economics, Anonymous

SURGE

“Before I hand back your exams, let’s review the overall performance of the class. Listed here are the median and mean scores. You can also see the grades of five highest scores on exam…”

I sat anxiously in my chair as my economics professor shared class statistics before finally handing back our tests.

After he distributed them to a number of students, they mingled at the front the room, speculating who earned the top scores.

“Dude, who do you think got the 101?”

“I bet it was *David?”

“Or maybe Mike? He’s always answering questions correctly.”

“Could be. But I …

Three-Dimensional Time-Resolved Trajectories From Laboratory Insect Swarms, Michael Sinhuber, Kasper Van Der Vaart, Rui Ni, James G. Puckett, Douglas H. Kelley, Nicholas T. Ouellette

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Aggregations of animals display complex and dynamic behaviour, both at the individual level and on the level of the group as a whole. Often, this behaviour is collective, so that the group exhibits properties that are distinct from those of the individuals. In insect swarms, the motion of individuals is typically convoluted, and swarms display neither net polarization nor correlation. The swarms themselves, however, remain nearly stationary and maintain their cohesion even in noisy natural environments. This behaviour stands in contrast with other forms of collective animal behaviour, such as flocking, schooling, or herding, where the motion of individuals is …

The school-to-prison pipeline begins with school disciplinary incidents that result in suspensions and/or referrals to law enforcement. With the support of the National Institutes of Justice, the presenters explored factors that inform decision-making about exclusionary discipline practices and law enforcement referrals in Virginia. Educators and school resource officers are invited to discuss strategies for promoting the well-being of youth at risk.

What Is The Role Of The Prison Library? The Development Of A Theoretical Foundation., Jayne Finlay, Jessica Bates Mar 2019

What Is The Role Of The Prison Library? The Development Of A Theoretical Foundation., Jayne Finlay, Jessica Bates

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

There has been little examination of how criminological theory may help to inform library practice in correctional settings. This article takes steps to address this deficit by presenting a new and timely approach to prison library research. It suggests that situating prison library research within the disciplines of librarianship, education and criminology can lead to a deeper understanding of the contribution made by libraries to the lives of those in prison. The authors propose a theoretical model which draws on theories of desistance, informal learning theories and critical librarianship. This model can be used by both library and education researchers …
