Racial Disparities In A State Based Workers' Compensation System, Caroline Kristine Smith Mar 2019

Racial Disparities In A State Based Workers' Compensation System, Caroline Kristine Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Racial, ethnic, and linguistic minority workers suffer higher rates of work-related injuries and illnesses in the United States compared to their White counterparts. Explanations for these higher rates include potential socioeconomic causes (education, income, and wealth) and occupational segregation into more dangerous occupations. What is less studied are the post-injury sequelae for minority workers, which is their experiences in the workers' compensation system, as well as their health and return to paid employment. What is known comes primarily from qualitative literature, which includes themes of racial discrimination (from employers, health care providers, and workers' compensation employees), a lack of information …

Jet Rebound From Hydrophobic Substrates In Microgravity, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin Mar 2019

Jet Rebound From Hydrophobic Substrates In Microgravity, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin

Dissertations and Theses

We experimentally investigate the phenomena of large jet rebound, a mode of fluid transfer following oblique jet impacts on hydrophobic substrates. We initially seek to describe the jet rebound regimes in tests conducted in the weightless environment of a drop tower. A parametric study reveals the dependence of the flow structure on the relevant dimensionless groups such as Reynolds number and Weber number defined on the velocity component perpendicular to the substrate. We show that significantly larger diameter jets behave similarly as much smaller jets demonstrated during previous terrestrial investigations is some parameter ranges while the flow is fundamentally different …

Seismic Behavior Of Screen Grid Core Insulated Concrete Form Walls, Anwer Sabah Mohammed Mohammed Mar 2019

Seismic Behavior Of Screen Grid Core Insulated Concrete Form Walls, Anwer Sabah Mohammed Mohammed

Dissertations and Theses

The use of the insulated concrete form (ICF) walls in residential buildings has increased over the past few decades. Much research has been conducted to evaluate the lateral strength of these walls by applying monotonic and cyclic loadings. In the current study, full-scale shake table experiments were employed to evaluate the in-plane behavior of four screen grid insulated concrete form (SGICF) walls. The first two wall specimens utilized dry fit insulated form blocks made from recycled expanded polystyrene granules that were bonded together with cement. When stacked, the cavities in the blocks formed a grid of cores that are evenly …

The first Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) Research Centers of Excellence (RCOE) Investigator's meeting was held on December 14, 2017, in New Orleans. The program was established to increase patient access to clinical experts on Lewy body dementia (LBD), which includes dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), and to create a clinical trials-ready network. Four working groups (WG) were created to pursue the LBDA RCOE aims: (1) increase access to high-quality clinical care, (2) increase access to support for people living with LBD and their caregivers, (3) increase knowledge of LBD among medical and allied (or …

A Pedagogical And Performance Approach To A Selection Of Piano Solo Pieces Written By Chen Yi And Zhou Long, Weiying Tang Mar 2019

A Pedagogical And Performance Approach To A Selection Of Piano Solo Pieces Written By Chen Yi And Zhou Long, Weiying Tang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation will focus on the performance and pedagogical features of six piano solos composed by Chen Yi and Zhou Long. Both composers are Chinese-American who earned their Bachelor degrees in music from the Central Conservatory in Beijing, and came to United States in 1985-1986 to pursue doctoral studies in composition at Columbia University. Because of the composers’ personal experience, they were not only familiar with Chinese regional folk elements, but also trained in the Western classical music tradition. Their works tend to blend and expand both Chinese and Western cultural traditions, musical ideas and techniques.

The six piano solo …

Sonata For Violin And Piano By John Corigliano: A Performance Guide, Xinyu Yang Mar 2019

Sonata For Violin And Piano By John Corigliano: A Performance Guide, Xinyu Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

John Corigliano is one of the most famous American composers of modern times having gained global recognition over the course of his career. The focus of this dissertation is on one of his earlier works, the Sonata for Violin and Piano. This sonata is the first of his compositions to have gained international attention. In the Sonata for Violin and Piano, Corigliano uses traditional music elements that are accessible to the audience. Although it is based on the traditional composition, Corigliano uses ambiguous tonality, polytonality, complicated rhythm, and polyrhythm throughout the piece. These factors cause several technical issues which occur …

Population Dynamics And Demographics Of Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, Through Spatial Analysis: Towards An Integrative Management Approach, Ashley Melancon Baer Mar 2019

Population Dynamics And Demographics Of Spotted Seatrout, Cynoscion Nebulosus, Through Spatial Analysis: Towards An Integrative Management Approach, Ashley Melancon Baer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) is one of the most highly prized sportfish along the Gulf of Mexico coast, particularly in Louisiana. Although spotted seatrout are considered to be well managed and sustainably fished according to the state’s most recent stock assessment, the spatial ecology of this species is largely understudied in Louisiana waters. Acoustic telemetry is an innovative technology that is commonly used to assess the movements and behavior of aquatic species, and can be used as a tool to address the paucity of information on the spatial dynamics of spotted seatrout. The focus of this study was …

Qualified Tenure: Presidential Removal Of The Fbi Director, Leah A. Hamlin J.D. Mar 2019

Qualified Tenure: Presidential Removal Of The Fbi Director, Leah A. Hamlin J.D.

Ohio Northern University Law Review

In 1976, Congress passed a bill instituting a ten-year term for the FBI director, ostensibly to provide the head of the nation’s foremost law enforcement agency some measure of independence from political pressure that could improperly influence investigations. This note explores the impact of the tenured term on the president’s power to remove the director at will for a personal reason, a political reason, or no reason at all. Although the Supreme Court has never directly addressed the president’s power with respect to the FBI director, this note concludes that a statutory term alone does not restrict the president’s ability …
